We’re in this TogetherIn one of the wealthiest counties in the United States, we are tackling the underlying problems that impact the health of those living in some of Pennsylvania’s poorest municipalities.

This year, we asked, you spoke, and we listened to your ideas for next steps we should take to help transform the Coatesville area. In one-on-one and group conversations, with online surveys, and two Vision Cafés, we asked you how the Brandywine Health Foundation could have the greatest impact. While we also analyzed data about our community’s needs, your input was critical to the development of the foundation’s three enhanced strategic directions.

You know that, while Chester County is the healthiest county in Pennsylvania statistically, significant racial and ethnic disparities exist that particularly impact the Coatesville area. African-American babies are three times more likely to be born at low birthweight than whites or Latinos. Disparities also exist in insurance coverage that dramatically impact health outcomes. For the thousands in our community without insurance, the Affordable Care Act presents a challenge and an opportunity to enroll many in the new health insurance marketplace and, hopefully, to include them in Pennsylvania’s expanded Medicaid program.

You also told us that the Coatesville Youth Initiative has been a tremendous catalyst, and in just four short years, has benefited hundreds of young people. After lengthy discussion, we believe that the initiative is now ready to leave the nest. With careful planning and a fundraising blitz to ensure it launches on stable financial footing, the initiative will become an independent nonprofit in early 2014.

Throughout all our conversations this year, you stressed that deeper issues of poverty and safety have to be tackled if health is to improve for many. That’s why in the coming years we’ll be focusing more of our efforts on community development, building upon the Brandywine Center and our commitment to the Public Safety Training Facility.

We are tremendously excited about the potential that exists for great change in Coatesville and eager to seize the opportunities with you. Unlike government or the business community, institutions like the Brandywine Health Foundation have the freedom to take risks and invest in innovative projects with the potential to enhance the public good. We are limited only by our vision and resources, which is why we are so grateful for every contribution you make to enhance our ability to create real change.

With you, for you, for our Coatesville community,

HURRICANE KATRINA taught us the value of a coordinated first-response system—and how communities can be strengthened to bounce back more effectively after a disaster. If our municipalities are not prepared for emergencies, everyone—particularly the most vulnerable and those living in our poorest communities—will suffer. Each day the new Chester County Public Safety Training Campus in South Coatesville is nurturing that kind of resilience. Besides the Brandywine Health Foundation’s $400,000 grant to help build the facility, we provided assistance to the Chester County Economic Development Council with ongoing fundraising efforts to complete this $19.1 million project.

Another BHF commitment of $200,000 over five years is supporting the campus training programs. Besides funding first-responder instruction, this year we supported the county’s first federal Emergency Management Institute-approved Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) classes. When Superstorm Sandy struck New Jersey and New York last year, citizens who had undergone CERT training in such basic disaster response skills as fire safety and suppression, light search-and-rescue, and first aid played valuable roles in helping understandably overwhelmed first responders.

“CERTs supplement the overall response effort by assisting professionals until they can get a handle on the whole situation and address it,” says Joe Sciandra, the emergency management coordinator of Valley Township’s emergency response plan and the county’s CERT trainer. In addition, the first goal is to ensure that each CERT trainee, and his or her family, is prepared enough so that they themselves won’t need help when an emergency occurs.

Each floor of the home of CERT trainee M.J. Rosenberry, a legal secretary from Honeybrook, is now stocked with bottled water, several days’ worth of food and such essentials as flashlights, batteries, candles and matches. Rosenberry, who also is a Wagontown Fire Company fire police officer, was a member of this year’s first 24-participant class. She also has distributed preparedness lists supplied by Janet Zeis, Chester County’s volunteer emergency management coordinator, to neighbors and local businesses. “In the event of an emergency, the less help you and your neighbors need, the more you can help others,” Rosenberry explains.

She has also encouraged other residents to take the county’s CERT training. Says Rosenberry: “I hope I never have to do this, but if an emergency does occur, I’ll be trained and ready.”

To help needy people deal better with what often become personal emergencies, BHF also has been a major proponent of Chester County’s recently implemented 2-1-1 system, which proved invaluable in New Jersey in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. The phone- and online-based referral service connects residents in need with scores of local health and human service providers. In addition to a Coatesville Resource Guide published two years ago, the foundation is now supporting the effort to get the word out about the online and telephone 2-1-1 system in Chester County.

NURTURING HEALTHY YOUTH

Empowering Coatesville’s TeensTWo SuMMERS AGo Aja Thompson agreed to work as a junior camp counselor at the Brandywine Valley Association’s (BVA) day camp as part of the Coatesville Youth Initiative’s (CYI) Summer ServiceCorps. She figured she could earn money and get a little more involved in her community. But for her, CYI has become so much more.

This past summer, she was a ServiceCorps team leader in charge of nine peers who worked at a variety of sites, including Waste oil Recyclers, the innovative, environmentally sensitive South Coatesville firm. There, with two of her team members, she helped create a mural and garden pathway, and harvested 300 pounds of produce for the Chester County Food Bank. “My second year as a team leader broadened my perspective,” she says. “I wanted to be more than just a resident of my community and I wanted to do more for those I care about.”

Now a senior at Coatesville Area Senior High School, Thompson also participated in the weeklong Brandywine Trek run by CYI and outward Bound. The hiking, canoeing and camping program has two goals. First, to help youth grow and develop, including enhancing their cultural competencies, leadership abilities and social skills—part of which is accomplished by taking the teenagers out of their comfort zones and presenting them with never-before-experienced challenges. Secondly, the program heightens youth awareness >

about the critical link between the health of the Brandywine Creek—the source of drinking water for 300,000 residents—and human health.

“I don’t like bugs,” Thompson confesses, “but the Trek taught me that even though I may not be comfortable with certain things, I should at least try them once to get a feel for them rather than just assuming I won’t like them.” For the first time, the Trek program also included teens from the Kennett Square Garage Community & Youth Center and the Parkesburg Point, which significantly increased the regional and ethnic diversity—African

American, white and Latino—of the Trek campers. “I made a lot of great friends,” says Thompson. “Race didn’t take anything away from the experience, it just added to it.”

As part of Game Changers, CYI’s student leadership program, Thompson also contributed her ideas for a brighter Coatesville at one of the foundation’s Vision Cafés. For the once-quiet Thompson, CYI has been transformative. “I’m not so reserved anymore,” she notes. “I feel like I can openly say how I feel and say what I think needs to be done. I feel like the program has given me the ability not to be afraid of my success.

“CYI helps us develop ourselves by transforming our minds and hearts to think of others and their needs, as well as the importance of being educated on the power of our voices and our efforts, and how our ideas enable us to create an impact far greater than what we believed could have been achieved.”

Youth Making a DifferenceRecently concluding its fourth summer, the CYI ServiceCorps program provided meaningful employment for 39 area teenagers at 14 different, mostly nonprofit, service agencies. Besides providing more than 10,000 hours of service to these organizations that address community needs, each Friday during the 8-week program the 14- to 18-year-olds also received valuable life skills, leadership and civic engagement training.

We are grateful to this year’s host sites: All God’s Children daycare, Art Partners Studio, Brandywine Hospital, Brandywine YMCA, Bridge Academy & Community Center, Chester County Head Start, Coatesville Area Public Library, Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, the Graystone Society, Handi-Crafters, Hearts in Hands Community Center, Brandywine Valley Association’s Myrick Conservation Center, Regency Park Apartments day camp and community center, and Waste Oil Recyclers.

e CYI each year positively impacts more than 500 youth—nearly three times as many as when it began in 2010.

WHEN DAVID LAPP’S former track coach at Coatesville Area Senior High School called several years ago to ask him if he would co-chair the foundation’s first Festive 5K Run/Walk—he couldn’t refuse Harry Lewis Jr. This past year Lapp chaired the event, which raised $31,000 for the Coatesville Youth Initiative.

“It’s a way to give back,” explains the unionville insurance broker, a high school state champion half-miler who attended the university of Tennessee on a track scholarship. “I was given guidance and opportunities I wouldn’t have known about if it hadn’t

been for Harry Lewis. Since CYI provides opportunities for middle school and high school students in the Coatesville area, I’m all for anything we can do for kids.”

FoR ALMoST ALL of her 80 years Irma Bailey has lived proudly in Coatesville, and for much of her life she has been actively involved as a community volunteer. She’s been everything from a Girl Scout troop leader to a poll worker and a board member of the Coatesville Public Library and local NAACP branch. Currently, Irma is on the boards of the corporate entities that govern the operation of the Brandywine Center. She was also one of the founding members of the BHF’s Garden Party Committee.

“The Garden Party raises awareness about what the foundation does and about Coatesville itself,” she says. “I believe you have to be committed to where you live to try to make it a better place, a good place for the children and for everybody.”

We Couldn’t Do It Without YouIt would be impossible for the Brandywine Health Foundation to fulfill its mission without

the hundreds of volunteers and donors who give of their time, talent and treasure. Here are several shining examples, including longtime residents

who have made an ongoing commitment to the foundation and the Coatesville community.

LAST FEBRuARY more than 250 area residents attended the first annual Harry Lewis Jr. Scholarship event, which netted more than $15,000 to fund the foundation scholarship named for the BHF board chair and longtime Coatesville Area School District coach, teacher and principal.

The guest speaker at the Gateway Church in Parkesburg was Coatesville native Diana Robinson Lewis, Harry’s sister-in-law, who recently retired as a Detroit TV news anchor. Another of the more moving speakers was the winner of the first annual $5,000 scholarship, Coatesville Area Senior High School (CASH) graduate Scarlett Patton, now a student majoring in elementary education at Delaware County Community College.

The 2013 recipient is Samuel Brown, also a CASH graduate, who participated in multiple Coatesville Youth Initiative programs. He is majoring in business communications at Millersville university. His ultimate dream is to develop youth programs and build a local youth-oriented community center.

Oversight Committees: The foundation’s audit committee is an independent group of volunteers, chaired by secretary Dawn James, with experienced accountants who do not serve on the board of directors. It is this committee’s responsibility to hire, evaluate and oversee the work of the foundation’s auditors, Maillie LLP, independent of the board of directors, the president and CEo, and accountants Countryside Consultants. The foundation’s separate finance committee, a volunteer committee of experienced business managers chaired by treasurer Mark Myers, has set a policy to invest funds with an asset mix of 75% equities and 25% fixed instruments and cash. They regularly review the foundation’s financial statements and portfolio, evaluating the performance of our investment managers and accountants. The committee’s investment strategy is designed to protect the foundation’s current and long-term benefits to the community by balancing the goal of growing to meet future need while prudently managing risk.

Notes to the Statement of Activities: Three major categories of income and expense can impact the foundation’s change in Net Assets from year to year. Investment income can swing dramatically depending upon the vicissitudes of the stock market. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) standards require the recording of a grant commitment in the year in which it was made, even if the intent is to cover expenses over several years. This practice impacts contributions given to the foundation (Contributions and Grants), as well as grants made to other nonprofits by the foundation (Program Services).

Notes to the Statement of Financial Position: Loans Receivable represent funds borrowed by Brandywine Health & Housing LP due to the foundation for the development of the Brandywine Center, and a loan to the BHS Transitional Corporation for the resolution of business issues. The latter loan will be repaid from the proceeds of a property sale. Grants Payable include commitments to ChesPenn Health Services and the Public Safety Training Facility Foundation.

With Gratitude: Jeanne Franklin

A donor with her husband Dick since the foundation’s inception, Jeanne Franklin has spent years volunteering on our behalf. She was one of the first volunteers at the Brandywine Consignment Shop and one of the original Garden Party Committee members. “It was very enjoyable,” says the Downingtown resident. “I met a lot of nice people, and the foundation does a wonderful job for Coatesville.”

This year the Brandywine Health Foundation recommitted to its primary mission of improving health in the Coatesville area by funding safety net agencies that so many depend upon to stay healthy—particularly our neighbors without health insurance, or for whom language and/or poverty inhibit access to preventive health services.

We also are honored to have founded and incubated the Coatesville Youth Initiative, which will soon become an independent, non-profit agency. We thank all of our community partners for their ongoing support of CYI; its impressive results underscore both the foundation’s effective stewardship of resources and the impact of your generosity.

“Not everybody needs to be referred to see a therapist once a week for six months,” says Schatz. In fact, adds Kind-Rubin, partly due to the stigma that has surrounded mental health, some patients referred for separate therapy never follow up. Schatz has provided behavioral health services to 282 patients in just nine months.

Schatz’s efforts are also complementing those of Mike Barnard, ChesPenn’s longtime community health educator. After moving from North Carolina to Coatesville last year, Hysin Alarcon was puzzled by her increasing weight. After all, the 36-year-old mother of four was only eating one meal a day.

After a referral from McCabe, Barnard pinpointed one of the main culprits: Alarcon was drinking 30 cups of coffee a day—each cup laced with two tablespoons, or nearly 100 calories, of sugar. At his urging, she now limits herself to only five cups of coffee per week, with artificial sweeteners or minimal sugar. And thanks to ChesPenn’s Quit Smoking program, she did just that—ending a decades-long smoking habit.

She also has taken part in the What to Buy nutrition program, run by Barnard

in partnership with the Eat Fresh Coatesville program. They offer seasonal, locally grown produce and monthly family cooking classes that she attended with her children. As a result, she has radically changed how she and her family eat: more vegetables and far less beef, and for her, more frequent but smaller meals. Also, each morning and evening she walks her dog for three miles.

The result: in four months she dropped two dress sizes and 20 pounds and her total cholesterol level dropped nearly 100 points, to 180. “I feel like a healthier woman,” says Alarcon, who also visits the Chester County Community Dental Center at the Brandywine Center. “My body inside feels

more fresh and clean, I have more energy, I’m happier and I have a much more positive attitude. Mr. Barnard is a blessing in my life and in my children’s lives. He has shown me a better, healthier way to live and, in turn, I can pass that on to my children.”

Behavioral and mental health have long been the stepchildren of U.S. healthcare. That’s particularly true for the under-served. That was one of the rationales for bringing medical and dental services together with mental health services at the Brandywine Center. In an effort to further enhance integrated health-care there, this year our support led to the presence in the ChesPenn Health Service’s medical offices of Joe Schatz, CGRC’s board-certified behavioral health nurse practitioner.

Working three days a week alongside ChesPenn’s clinical staff, Schatz has been able to enhance physicians’ time with patients—both adults and children—in order to ferret out such issues as anxiety and depression and the underlying reasons why patients fail to take their medications or follow lifestyle recommendations. “He has been invaluable,” says ChesPenn family physician Kevin McCabe, DO. “When Joe starts treating patients for depression, wow, their compliance and overall health starts getting better.”

When ChesPenn doctors couldn’t find a medical cause for a child’s bed-wetting, Schatz solved the problem after discovering the child was upset by a death in the family. After speaking with Schatz, an obese resident of a group home, David Brown, was inspired enough to start a walking group. >

ADVANCING HEALTH EQUITY

“Emotional matters affect our physical health and our physical health

affects our emotional state,” says Andy Kind-Rubin, PhD, vice president

for clinical services for Child Guidance Resources Centers (CGRC). “So if

you’re not addressing both, you’re not providing comprehensive care.”

ChesPenn patient Hysin Alarcon (left) confers with Mike Barnard, ChesPenn’s community health educator. Opposite page: ChesPenn patient David Brown (from left), who was inspired to start a walking group by Joe Schatz, Child Guidance Resources Centers’ behavioral health nurse practitioner, speaks with his ChesPenn doctor, Kevin McCabe, DO, and Schatz.
