Teaching Methods….

The search for an effective teaching method is a perennial concern and goal for a responsible educator!

Nov 2009 - Jun 2010

Can be divided into two approaches:

1) Teacher-centred

2) Student-centred

We start with Lecture Method

...still  the  most  frequently  used method of instruction

Lecture Method

Nov 2009 - Jun 2010

Malaysian Maritime Academy

• The instructor talks more or less continuously to the class. The class listens, takes notes of the facts and ideas worth remembering, thinks over them later

•The class has limited interaction with the instructor

…. first been employed by the Sophists who travelled throughout Greece speaking on various topics upon request!!

Strengths of Lecture Method

Nov 2009 - Jun 2010

Malaysian Maritime Academy

Session - 06

Training of Trainers Course - Based on IMO Model Course 6.09 4 of 15

Provides good overview

It summarizes, synthesizes and organizesCovers wide ground with breadth & depth

Enlivens learning situation with voice, gesture & personality

Exciting when delivered by big professors

Weakness of Lecture Method

Nov 2009 - Jun 2010

Useless if copy of text book

It is passive, lacks students involvement

Top-down, discourages critical thinking

Widens gap between instructor & student

Learners have problem in concentration

Weakness of Lecture Method

One-way process of formal lecturing• ignores all important principles of learning,

Specially – passive learning de-motivates students• One solution could be mini-lectures followed by discussion/ quiz

…. Mini-lectures + discussion/quiz!

Tutorial Method …. The dilemma while tutoring!

Session - 06

(1) During problem solving, should the tutor simply tell the student the next step or elicit the step from the student with a prompt or question?

(2)When a step has been completed during problem solving or a question has been answered during the post-solution discussion, should the tutor ask the student to explain it?

Discussion-based Learning …. owes its origin again to the Greek philosopher-

educators, particularly Plato, who rebelled against the authoritarian type of lecturing system of the Sophists!!

Discussion will refer to leader-guided or moderated group discussion. This will usually follow a pattern where the leader teaches

partly by lecture, or at least offers an introduction and conclusion. Guided discussion may involve some peer-to-peer interaction, but

most of the interaction will be from learners to the leader or the group in general. The leader offers a short summary and comment to most, or all, sharing.

Learning is enhanced when we create an environment that provides students with opportunities to learn in different ways. We can help

all of them by employing a range of active approaches (discussing, listening, writing, reading, and reflecting) and using various teaching

strategies (lectures, multimedia presentations, demonstrations, discovery laboratories, collaborative group and projects).
