• Ensure that injuries and illnesses that might occur can be dealt with by the first aid personnel you provide. Compare what is covered in the first aid courses with the types of injuries you might expect.

• Even where first aiders are shown to be unnecessary, there is still a possibility of an accident or sudden illness, so you may wish to consider providing qualified first aiders.

• The degree of hazard in your work activities and the number of employees.

The following table offers guidance to minimumlevels of first aid cover in a workplace but is noreplacement for a thorough risk assessment.

This is not a definitive number of personnel required, and the outcome of the risk assessment and other specific circumstances should be taken into account. Remember to have enough first aiders to provide cover during the holidays.

HumanPerformanceChampioning a safety culture

Improving Safety and Business Performance across the Nuclear Sector

Within the UK Nuclear Sector we have been on a long journey with safety since the pioneering days of the Windscale site. Human Performance has now emerged as the leading thinking around safety and business improvement.

In the highly regulated nuclear sector we have become accustomed to the rules and standard procedures. However, we must also encourage an openness to admitting our mistakes if we are to keep improving on those standards. Errors are certainly predictable, especially if we apply the learning from our experience of previous events and areopen to those errors we see around us. The culture that we have within our organisations will also impact on our safety and business performance.

Many of these courses are available to non-nuclearas well as nuclear sectors.

What is Human Performance?Human Performance impacts on all aspects of the working environment from the human and individual level through to the environment, organisation and job. Human Performance is centred around reducing errors (Re) that we can see around us but it is also about managing the defences (Md) effectively to stop errors having an impact now and also at a future date.

The basic principles that have been developed around Human Performance are:

• We are all fallible and make mistakes• Errors are predictable• The values of an organisation and its processes have a huge impact on the way we behave• These behaviours are reinforced by encouragement from peers, leaders and colleagues• Events that affect safety and business can be avoided by understanding why they occur and learning from past events

About the Human Performance (HuP)Accelerator Programmes

On average humans make seven mistakes per hour. Most of these don’t affect us but one day a crucial error could have serious consequences for your business and your safety. Human Performance is about us as individuals and teams, and how we can reduce the frequency of errors whilst building in better defence mechanisms. It is about championing this throughout your organisation.

The HuP Accelerator Programmes have been designed in partnership with the National Skills Academy Nuclear(NSA Nuclear) to the requirement set out in the HumanPerformance training standards and will prepare you from fundamental level through leading a human performance safety culture to practitioner level in your organisation.

Business Solutions Bury College in partnership with Oakridge Training and Consulting are the only nationally approved providers of Human Performance safety training to theNuclear sector in the UK.

HuP = Re + MdHuman Performance = Reducing Errors + Managing Defences
