A Message From Our Pastor

Dear Friend,

When I preached my first message in front of 14 people to begin the ministry of Peace Baptist Church, I pledged to start a church that would radically change our community. In that first sermon, I spoke of the church being an outreach center to address the spiritual, emotional, relational, and economic needs of hurting people. I spoke of the ministry village open 24 hours a day to house men, women, and children. I talked about church planting and reaching different people groups around the world and in our city. With tears streaming down my face I cast vision for comprehensive feeding programs, training for at risk youth, Christ-centered drug rehab ministries, and family reunification program. It has been an exciting journey to see how God in just 15 years has made much of that dream a reality.

Presently, Peace Baptist Church is positioned to accomplish even more than I ever dreamed possible. Our vision has expanded to include ministry partners who share our dream. We are passionate about extending the Kingdom of God by uniting with hundreds of like minded saints who understand that we must unite to maximize our strength. This site outlines what Peace Baptist has done, is doing, and seeks to do in the future. It is my hope that you will find yourself within these pages. I simply pray that God will prompt your heart to join us in whatever capacity you feel comfortable. Let’s join hands and hearts to bring God glory through effective and life changing ministry.

Peace Baptist Church was founded February 7, 1993 in the home of Pastor and Mrs. Tyrone Barnette with fourteen (14) adult members. Since that time, the church has worshipped in ten (10) different locations, and is now comprised of over two thousand (2000) members.

For three of those years, Peace worshipped in the gymnasium and chapel of Indian Creek Baptist Church. The two churches shared a common vision to reach the Stone Mountain area for Christ. By sharing the facility, the racial lines that have defined Stone Mountain in the past were being torn down, as Christians united to bring glory to God and meet the needs of hurting people.

His glory was revealed again, when Peace pursued the acquisition of Rowland Hills Baptist Church. In October 1996, Peace met with the trustees of Rowland Hills expressing their interest in the property. Rowland Hills sold the property to Peace for far less than its value, without involving banks or charging interest. The building is an instrument to be used as God wills.

FEED THE NEED MINISTRY

Feed the Need was established in 2005. Feed the Need’s focus is to serve homeless communities, the elderly, homebound and to those less fortunate. Feed the Need vision is to reconnect impoverished individuals, families and community with a bridge of hope tied with an unconditional service of love and supports that ultimately leads to transformations and positively impacting lives.

Our purpose, mission and reason we serve is to meet needs of our community to help improve quality of life, encourage self-sufficiency and spiritual growth through exampling of the unwavering love of our Savior.

Feed the Need goes out the third Saturday of each month to fellowship and serve packaged lunches to homeless individuals. Realizing we can’t cure homelessness, however, we can contribute to one less going hungry by providing pop top ready to eat meals, hygiene products, seasonal clothing that can sustain them for yet another day.

Prayers were answered in December 2002 when Peace was blessed with it’s newest facility at 1399 Austin Dr. Decatur, GA. Peace has been sent to this location to be a further beacon of light in a dark dismal world.

Yet, again God showed Himself strong on our behalf when our 40 acres and a Miracle became a reality April 2006. We were blessed to close on 40 acres of land on Miller Rd in Decatur, GA that will soon become the site of our new worship facility, ministry village and much more! Instead of selling the current property the membership chose to retain the 45,000 square foot facility and turn it into the Urban Center.

Peace has a dynamic, Spirit filled worship service. The Word of God is the highest priority and proclaimed with power and conviction each Sunday morning. Members are growing deeper in their walk with God as they learn to apply the truths of scriptures to their lives. Our services are casual so everyone is comfortable.


CELEBRATE RECOVERY

Nine years ago, Peace Baptist Church launched Celebrate Recovery with two participants. It was designed as a program to help those struggling with hurts, habits and hang-ups by showing them the loving power of Jesus Christ through a recovery process.

Celebrate Recovery program has helped more than 1,000 people at Peace, attracting over 75% of its members from outside the church. Seventy percent of the people who go through the program stay with the church.

Currently multiple small groups are facilitated each week. Current group supports are as follows: Men substance/alcohol; women substance/alcohol, codependent for women, 12-step study, fourth step for men, children’s therapeutic classes as well as interactive fellowship receptions.

As Pastor Barnette says, “The church is the only institution that has the knowledge and strength to heal the hurts in society. As Christians come together to exercise their unique spiritual gifts, we will see the powerful move of God this world is so thirsty for. Our strength is in our unity and our love for our God.”


BENEVOLENCE

The Benevolence Ministry of Peace Baptist Church is funded through resources allocated through funds from the church’s budget. The Benevolence Ministry was designed to assist its membership experiencing financial hardship. This service has been extended to regular church attendees and persons living in the neighboring community as funds are available.

To get an appointment, applicant must submit completed application with supporting documents of benevolent needs. The applicant is then given an appointment to meet with Benevolence Committee for assessment.

The church budget is not always able to satisfy all requests, but commits to providing prayer and alternative avenues of aid.

All requests for assistance are confidential in nature.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The purpose of the Domestic Violence Ministry is to bring awareness, education and change perception while restoring self-esteem and confidence of victims by providing support, guidance, counseling and resources; while sharing the love of Christ.

The ministry focuses on prevention and intervention of domestic violence by reaching thousands of men and women, including other church communities. In doing so, we will affect policy and change to break generational patterns of violence through the healing and empowerment of the participants.

The worship service at Peace begins with an Opening Prayer of thanksgiving that sets the tone for Praise and Worship. The choir typically sings the latest gospel praise songs. However, they will also occasionally go “old school” with some foot stomping hymns.

The ministerial staff will then Recognize the Visitors and briefly share the Announcements for the week. First time visitors will receive a visitors’ DVD that has more information on the church, a welcome message from our pastor, a sample sermon, and video clips from various Peace events. Worship will continue with members and friends giving their Tithes and Offerings.

The choir then offers up more praise through Song as the congregation prepares their hearts for the Word. The Sermons are life application, biblically based teachings that are oftentimes illustrated through impromptu demonstrations and skits. Pastor Barnette

SERVANT EVANGELISM

Do you have a desire to work in ministry and help spread God’s Love? Servant evangelism is a simple, approach to sharing God’s love in simple, practical ways. People are touched with simple acts of kind-ness asking for nothing in return.

Servant evangelism wins the heart before it confronts the mind. Acts of kindness brings a person closer to God, often in a phenomenal way as it bypasses ones mental defences. The average Christian is willing to risk handing a stranger a cold bottle of water on a hot day.

The typical reaction is, “Oh, thank you!” “This is so nice!” “I can’t believe this is for free!” and, “Why are you doing this?”

Acts of kindness build the bridge for a person to receive a touch of love from God. It’s simple, practical, effective, inexpensive and fun!

We encourage small teams to perform out-reach opportunities on a continual basis.

At the end of the Sermon, the congregation will be asked to make a Decision for Salvation for those who want to give their lives to Christ, Rededication for those who want to recommit their lives to Christ, and/or Affiliation for those who want to join the family of Peace. The service will conclude with the Benediction, the final blessing.

Sunday Teen Worship (The Loft): 9:00 am, 11:15 am

The teen service at Peace is a high energy, age appropriate, casual service. The teens are very active in the service leading Praise and Worship, serving as ushers and greeters, sharing the Announcements, and Recognizing Visitors and birthdays by singing the infamous Happy Birthday song. The teens are very active in organizing, creating, and performing Skits, Human Videos, and Songs that help illustrate the message that comes forth.

HEALTH MINISTRY

Health Ministries advises the church on health issues and is proactive in providing resources to the community on health. Because health and wellness are a positive support for spiritual well-being, this ministry is as vital to the work of the church as any other.

A Health Ministry is an essential part of congregational life. Members have the opportunity to learn about wellness and disease prevention. Healthy lifestyle choices are promoted through seminar and workshops, giving information in such areas as exercise, nutrition and handling stress.

Our health fair screening, make early detection and treatment possible, and provides appropriate resources and advocacy to individuals and community.

Peace Baptist Church Health Ministry promotes healing and health as wholeness, to its members and the community it serves. Pastor Jeff prepares Sermons that addresses the issues that teens are facing and provides practical biblically based teachings on how to face the challenges of being a teen. There are times when the teens bring forth the message sharing a relevant testimony and Word.

PRISON MINISTRY

The Prison Ministry of Peace Baptist Church is currently in partnership with Greenforest Community Church Prison Ministry in Decatur GA.

The purpose of the Prison Ministry is to reach lives for Jesus Christ behind prison walls. Monthly outreaches and ministry events provide opportunities for men and women to serve in the local state prisons and support families of the incarcerated

It is vital that new recruits are trained and cleared through criminal background checks and other criteria before visiting behind the walls.

A team of trained prison ministry leaders monthly visit the Fulton County Jail every fourth Monday. New teams will be developed as training is completed.

All ministries of Peace are structured around this vision and organized under eight parent ministries: Administration, School of Discipleship, First Impressions, GRACE Fellowship Groups, Pastoral Care, Urban Ministry Center, Worship & Arts, and Youth Development.

Discipling…….. In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands the disciples to “Go and make disciples of all nations”. We too have been called to make disciples who are rooted and grounded in God’s Word. The School of Discipleship includes all of our biblically based educational programs including Wednesday Nite Live Bible Study, Sunday School, and Ministry Training.

The Worship and Performing Arts Ministry is designed to minister God’s Word through song, drama, dance, media, and spoken word. Although we may use non-conventional methods, the Word of God is preeminent and uncompromised. Our pastor oftentimes uses skits to bring his message to life.

SANAA

SANAA is a Food Pantry Program under the umbrella of Peace on the Move, Inc., a separate 501c3 program of Peace Baptist Church.

The ultimate objective of SANAA is to help significantly reduce the number of men, women, children and seniors who are hungry. This is done by providing grocery bags as well as other resource information to assist in moving clients beyond their current condition.

Donations and partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank help alleviate the anxiety and stress of hunger. Through these efforts over 100,000 pounds of food has been distributed annually for the past four years to feed over 11,000 individuals each year.

OUR MINISTRIESthe training of licensed ministers as well as the training of lay leaders who wish to walk members through crisis, our Stephen’s Ministers.

The Church…… Peace is oftentimes praised for its warmth and family atmosphere and we attempt to seal that impression from the time a person walks through the door. Our First Impressions Ministry which includes greeters, ushers, volunteer receptionists, the parking, van, and beautification ministries, and exists to make a lasting, positive first impression to all who call or visit the church.

We maintain our warm atmosphere through fellowship. The Womens, Mens, Marrieds, Singles, and Seniors ministries work cooperatively to provide church wide and small group fellowship events to allow the members to connect and network.

MY SISTERS HOUSE

As Stated by The Church on the Hill of New York City, “We may not realize it, but we tend to take many blessings in our lives for granted. We experience joys and pains, gains and losses, but most of us in this society always have a roof over our heads, ample food, and clothing throughout our lives.

What about people who lost it all, right here in our midst? Overwhelming personal losses, loss of livelihood and other factors all lead to homelessness.

My Sister’s House is a ministry that provides to women and children in homeless shelters chapel service through the preached word, prayer, praise and mentorship. Disciple Ministers, Ministers in Training, and Lay Ministers meet the needs of the shelter residents.

Are you called to share God’s Love through worship and fellowship to those who are hurting? If so this may be the ministry for you.

The Church…… Peace is oftentimes praised for its warmth and family atmosphere and we attempt to seal that impression from the time a person walks through the door. Our First Impressions Ministry which includes greeters, ushers, volunteer receptionists, the parking, van, and beautification ministries, and exists to make a lasting, positive first impression to all who call or visit the church.

We maintain our warm atmosphere through fellowship. The Womens, Mens, Marrieds, Singles, and Seniors ministries work cooperatively to provide church wide and small group fellowship events to allow the members to connect and network.

Since its inception in 1999, over 350 men have had the opportunity to leave addictive lifestyles for healthy, functional relationships with God, themselves, and others. The focus is on healing the total person, recovery from life controlling problems, and preparation for successful living. Residents receive a unique blend of Spiritual discipleship, 12 step recovery meetings, work therapy, vocational development, group, individual, and family counseling.

Some of the outreach ministries that began within Peace Baptist Church are now managed by a separate 501-3(c), Peace on the Move. This allows Peace to partner with external organizations and expand it’s vision well beyond it’s “four walls”. Youth Development Ministry

God has called Peace to “train up our children in the way they should go”. Our Youth Development Ministry is a dynamic ministry that works with youth from ages 0-25 years old. By including all youth under one umbrella, we are able to properly transition our youth through the major developmental stages of life. Our Kingdom Kidz Ministry works with children 0 – 5th

The Student Impact Ministry encompasses the middle and high school students. And Thirst is the Young Adult Ministry. Kingdom Kidz and Student Impact youth have their own worship services that teaches God’s Word on their age and spiritual levels. There are many youth who have led their parents to the church and to Christ.
