Dear Member:

Thirty–five years ago when I started Metro Trading Association, I had a vision. The concept of business owners helping one another succeed was an ingenious one and one that could only promote good will and strength in the community. This is what the mission of MTA is.

Sometimes a business owner gets away from helping each other and starts helping himself. When ‘traders’ start inflating their prices and/or charging part cash, they are in fact stealing from their fellow business owners and devaluing the value of the buyer’s trade credit.

While most of MTA’s members are trading fairly, there are still those few who need reminding of the rules. If someone expects to purchase at 100% trade, he has to remember that he has to sell 100% trade!

In order for MTA to protect the value of your trade credit and keep this a fair trading ground for all we need your help. Following these simple tips will help all involved:

1. Do your homework! The best ‘traders’ are informed ‘traders’. Always get a couple of quotes, including a cash quote, so you know what the going rate for your purchase should be. Remember, sometimes paying a slightly higher price for a trade quote, may still be a good value to you, depending on your investment in your trade credit.

2. If you find someone ‘price jacking’ and/or charging 50/50, WALK AWAY FROM THE DEAL and call our office! MTA has a standard two strikes and you’re out policy. If we get two reports that someone is conducting business in a way that is unfair to our members, his business will not be listed in any

advertisement and is likely to get his membership revoked.

3. Recommend business owners you know who have integrity. The best way for us to build the Association is to get recommendations from you. You want people that are like you, and will treat you the way you treat others.

Remember, a trade sale produces the same cash profit as a cash sale when the MTA rules of fair trading are used.

In this newsletter you will find a number of people whose memberships have been revoked for unfair trading policies. MTA replaced them with fair traders, who are now enjoying the thousands of dollars in new business the dishonest businesses would have enjoyed.

Top Reason Why Customers Are Loyal To Small Business

It’s quite simple: Receiving a smile and a greeting at an independent business was the most oft-cited reason consumers felt loyalty to that business, according to a recent poll of 2000 consumers. One-third of respondents cited excellent customer service as the reason they returned to the store/shop. The study also found that 3 out of 5 consumers (60%) are willing to shell out more to buy from an independent store, rather than a larger retailer.

The Blessings of Being a Barter Fanatic

I’ve recently noticed that there is a double blessing in being a barter fanatic. Of course the primary benefit is being able to trade with a bunch of folks for products/services that I probably couldn’t afford with cash. The second benefit is that I can trade with them over a longer period of time because of my fanaticism.

As a barter fanatic I can’t help but talk to people about trade. I talk to people I’ve just met about it and I talk to people I’ve know my whole life. I talk to my wife. I talk to my employees. I’m sure there are a bunch of people who don’t figure I can even talk about anything else! It also means that I talk to the people that I’m trading with about how great barter is. It means I’m always talking to them about how to get the most out of barter. I’m usually trying to give them ideas of how to use it to their best advantage. I’m convinced that my enthusiasm and occasional wisdom have helped keep some of my trading partners bartering longer than they would have otherwise. As we’ve discussed before, there is usually a limit to how much any company can barter. Because of my fanaticism I have found that when I have a barter partner who needs to reduce their barter volume, I am usually the last person that they cut off from barter.

The take away is this: Be enthusiastic about barter and try to help your trade partners be successful as well. Do your best to be your barter vendor’s favorite client. What comes around goes around.

The Magic of Complementary Currencies

We in the barter industry have long held that a community that embraces alternative currencies, like those offered by barter exchanges, trade exchanges, time banks, and the like, will experience a measurable economic value in their community. This wonderful example of a community currency in circulation in Ke-nya is a great example of some of the work being done in currencies around the world.

The project was launched on May 11, 2013. The immediate effect was an increase in sales of 22%. That meant increasing incomes and purchasing power by 22%. These exchanges were of goods and services that without the additional currency would have been thrown away or gone to waste, not because they were unmarketable but because potential customers did not have the money to buy them. Introducing Bangla-Pesa connected the community to its own resources when the only things lacking were those slips of paper called “money.”

The Roostertail

The Roostertail is Detroit’s premier waterfront entertainment facility which was established when Joe Schoenith decided that Detroit needed a restaurant along the river to entertain friends and host some of the most magnifi-cent parties in the city; and so in 1958 the Roostertail was born. The Roostertail is located just 1.5 miles West of Grosse Pointe on the crest of Lake St. Clair along the banks of the Detroit River. The unique atmosphere of the Roostertail is devoted to functions ranging from weddings, proms, seminars, and charity functions.

The name “Roostertail” refers to the spray created by a fast-moving boat. Since its’ inception in 1958 the Roostertail has become an icon in Detroit’s social scene and has captured the interest of the “who’s who” all around the city and has become “the” place to see and be seen.

Aside from hosting some of Detroit’s most memorable parties, the Roostertail has also had its share of fame hosting a number of celebrity performers from the likes of Tony Bennett and Eric Clapton to the Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin.

These days the Roostertail is devoted to catering private events, one third of all high school proms in the Metro Detroit Area are held at the Roostertail as well handling over 70 weddings a year. Whatever the occasion, it’s sure to be a hit. The Roostertail also is host to our annual Holiday Trade show which will be held on November 7 this year. TRADE TALk

Use a Trade Slip for Every Transaction

When conducting business on trade, follow the same procedures that you would for a cash transaction. Use whatever docu-ments, quotes or invoices that you typically use in the course of business and use the trade slip as the method of payment. Fill out the trade slip completely and be sure to verify that the expiration date is current. Obtain the buyers signature and give them the pink (bottom) copy.

We also recommend checking the identity of the cardholder, especially if you do not personally know the buyer. Do not do business with someone who is not the cardholder or if they do not have a valid, unexpired membership card . It is the sell-ers’ responsibility to verify the identity of the buyer and get an authorization on the sale. It is OK to ask for identification. If you have a question about a transaction or a cardholder, call Metro Trading Association before you perform the service or release the merchandise. If you do not take these few simple steps, you may be at risk of not getting paid for your good or service.

We are available Mondays through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm to assist you. Authorizations may be obtained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling our automated system at 1-800-589-8723 or on line at www.metrotrading.com. For large transactions, we recommend getting a preauthorization, which sets the funds aside pending completion of the job. You must obtain a pre-authorization from an MTA employee. When the job is complete; contact MTA to release the funds to your account. Again, be sure to obtain a signature from the buyer on the trade slip and/or whatever form you use in the course of doing business.
