Tracing air pollution and climate change effects
on forest ecosystems: trend and risk assessments
5th ICP Forests Scientific Conference
10–12 May 2016 – Luxembourg
2nd Announcement and Call for Abstracts
Invitation
A. K
The 5th ICP Forests Scientific Conference focuses on the value of long-term data in forest
ecosystem research. As a matter of fact, the impact of air pollutants on forest ecosys-
tems and their interaction with climate fluctuation and change, pests, diseases can only
be substantiated by means of long-term data, allowing trends and risk analyses.
The conference will concentrate on evaluation and methods with respect to both envi-
ronmental drivers (such as N deposition, ozone, climate) and forest responses (like tree
health and growth, nutrient contents, diversity and mycorrhizas). Issues like the sustain-
ability of ecosystem services and forest management options are closely connected to
environmental impacts and ecosystem responses and may hence be discussed.
The conference addresses all scientists in the field of air pollution and climate change
research in forests. In particular scientists and experts from ICP Forests, the UNECE ICP
community under the Working Group on Effects (WGE), partners and stakeholders, and
interested scientists from related fields are encouraged to participate. Particular interest
is put on projects, evaluations and modelling exercises that are based on ICP Forests da-
ta. Respective researchers are encouraged to present and discuss their work and results.
Main topics
Nitrogen in forest ecosystems including biodiversity issues
The role of sulphur and basic cations in forest ecosystems
The impact of ozone
Heavy metals in forests — still a challenge?
Climate change effects on forests and water budget issues
Background
Forests represent an immense resource for our planet. They provide a number of ser-
vices from the provision of wood and non-wood products to the protection of biodiversi-
ty, habitats, water resources and the regulation of atmosphere and climate processes
and forests are essential for the wellbeing of the human society.
The International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollu-
tion Effects on Forests (ICP Forests) operates under the UNECE Convention on Long-
Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP). Established in 1985, it continuously moni-
tors forest condition and environmental factors across Europe. The data is used by a
large and still growing number of scientists investigating various policy relevant research
questions.
Organization and Time schedule Conference structure
Organization. The conference will be organized in sessions with keynotes (30 min) and
standard presentations (15 min) and will offer the opportunity for mutual exchange on the
state of the art. A poster session is anticipated encouraging authors to present their find-
ings. Posters will be given a 1 minute time slot for a flash presentation.
Policy and outreach. The conference will provide an overview on the latest research in poli-cy relevant fields, such as air pollution trends, trends of response variables and interac-tions with climate change, as well as on nutrient and water cycles, biodiversity, and forest condition.
Data provider and user interface. The conference provides an annual platform to bring to-
gether monitoring experts, researchers, and modelers. Data users will benefit from back-
ground information related to the data sets. Data providers will profit from an advanced
insight into the latest statistical applications based on "their" data. Data users will be able
to take advantage of getting in touch with data experts to discuss data availability and
quality, as well as metadata.
Expected output. A special issue of an ISI journal is anticipated. Press releases based on key
results as well as technical summaries are being considered.

Interested scientists are invited to submit their abstracts by February 28, 2016 to Marco Ferretti ([email protected]) and Walter Seidling ([email protected]).
Venue and registration
The conference will take place in conjunction with the 32nd Task Force Meeting of ICP For-ests at the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure - Department of the En-vironment, 4 place de l’Europe L-1499 Luxembourg (http://www.environnement.public.lu/functions/apropos_du_site/mev/index.html). For registration all participants are kindly asked to fill in the online registration form on the ICP Forests website. All information will also be made available on the ICP Forests website at: http://icp-forests.net/events. Costs
For the Scientific Conference and for the excursion no participation fees are charged. Lunch is not offered by the organizer, however a canteen is available. For the Task Force Dinner (12 May 2016) the participation fee is 75 €.
