• 75,000 chemicals are licensed for use in the U.S.

• Everyone in the U.S. permanently carries more than300 chemical pollutants, pesticides and toxic metalsin their organs and tissues: 300 synthetic chemicalsacquired from foods, drugs and personal care

Acesulfame KSugar substitute found in pudding, chewing gum,non-dairy creamers, instant coffee mixes, tea mixesand gelatin desserts. May increase cancer in humans.

Acetone Also known as Dimethylketone, 2-Propanone,Beta-Ketopropane. Inhalation of moderate to high

amounts, even for a short time results in entry of ac-etone into bloodstream where it is carried to all otherorgans. Nose, throat, lung and eye irritant, headaches,confusion, increased pulse rate, effects on blood, nau-sea, vomiting and unconsciousness, coma. Shortensthe menstrual cycle in women. Effects of long-termexposure include kidney, liver and nerve damage,increased birth defects, metabolic changes and coma.Found in nail polish remover.

AcetaldehydeFound in many nail care products. Known to cause

cancers in humans and experimental animals.

AlcoholImplicated in oral cancer. Found in mouthwash, as-tringent, toothpaste, cleansers.

Alkyl-phenol EthoxyladesMay reduce sperm count. Found in shampoo andbubble bath.

Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Destroys skin cells and leaves skin more susceptible todamage from the environment and skin cancer. Actu-ally ends up aging skin. Found in anti-aging facialcreams and lotions.

AluminumCentral nervous system damage and linked to Al-zheimers. Found in antiperspirant deodorants.

Ammonium Glycolate A photosensitizer with potential to increase risk of

sunburn and skin cancer by intensifying UV expo-sures in deep skin layers. This sensitizer can instigateimmune system response that includes itching, burn-ing, scaling, hives, and blistering of skin. It is also apenetration enhancer which alters the skins’ structure,allowing other chemicals to penetrate deeper into theskin, thus increasing the amounts of other chemicalsthat reach the bloodstream. Severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, head-aches, nausea, fatigue, lack of concentration, nervous-ness, increased risk of Hodgkin’s disease, non-Hodg-kin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Cocamidopropyl BetaineMay contain harmful impurities or form toxic break-down products, itching, burning and blistering of skin.Synthesized from coconuts, this chemical is found inbody products and may be labeled natural or organic.

CoumarinFormerly the active ingredient in rat poison. A car-cinogenic ingredient used in the manufacturing of

deodorants, shampoos, skin fresheners and perfumes.

D&C Yellow 11Found in: Lip gloss, polish remover, nail polish, bathoil/salts/soak, body spray, mositurizer, lipstick, styl-ing gel/lotion, bar soap, after sun products, cologne,nail treatment. Color safe for external use only, foundin ingested products, Color not approved for usearound eyes, in eye products.

DEA: Diethanolamine

 A chemical used as a wetting or thickening agent inshampoos, soaps, hairsprays and sunscreens, blocksabsorption of the nutrient choline, which is essentialto brain development in a fetus.

EthylacrylateFound in some mascaras’s suspected as a cause ofcancer in humans, based on studies of human popula-tions or laboratory animals.

Hydroabietyl AlcoholFound in styling gel/lotions. Unsafe for use in cos-metics according to the fragrance industry’s International Fragrance Association.

TEA: Tea, Triethanolamine

MEA: Cocamide DEA, Lauramide DEA, Linole

amide DEA, Oleamide DEA

NDEA (N-nitrosodiethanolamine) forms when DEAreacts with nitrosating agents or the actual addi-tion of nitrite as a preservative. As there is no way todetermine if NDEA has been formed, it is imperativeto avoid all products containing DEA as it is a knowcarcinogen. Often used in cosmetics to adjust the pHand used with many fatty acids to convert acid to sal(stearate), which then becomes the base for a cleanse

TEA causes allergic reactions including eye prob-ems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxic ifabsorbed into the body over a long period of time.These chemicals are already restricted in Europe dueto known carcinogenic effects (although still in use ithe U.S.)

Repeated skin applications of DEA-based detergentsresulted in a major increase in the incidence of liverand kidney cancer. Found in shampoos, skin cream,

ubble bath, shaving gel, conditioner, lotions.

Diacetyl An additive that tastes like butter causes a serious

ung condition called bronchiolitis obliterans, or“popcorn workers’ lung. Found in foods, especiallymicrowave popcorn.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) A chemical used to keep nail polish from chipping,

as been connected to cancer in lab animals as well asong-term fertility issues in newborn boys. Banned in

Europe, but still in use in the U.S. Found in nail polis

Dimethicone A silicone emollient, which coats the skin not allowintoxins out. May promote tumors and accumulate in tiver and lymph nodes. Found in lotions and creams.

DioformsDamage and weaken tooth enamel allowing morestaining and discoloration to take place. Found intooth whitening products.

Disodium EDTAHarmful if swallowed or inhaled, causes irritation toskin, eyes and respiratory tract. Found in cosmetics.

ElastinSuffocates skin by not allowing moisture in or out.Found in facial creams and body lotions.

FluorideMay contain lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic. Accumulates in body and contributes to bone disease.Carcinogenic. Found in toothpastes.

FormaldehydeSuspected carcinogen and neurotoxin, it may be fatalif swallowed, absorbed through skin, inhaled or swal-lowed. Can cause spasms, edema, chemical pneumoni-tis and is extremely destructive to tissue of the mu-cous membrane, this chemical is found in many nailcare products. Known to cause cancers in humansand experimental animals. Found in baby shampoo,bubble bath, deodorants, perfume, cologne, hair dye,mouthwash, toothpaste, hair spray, nail polish.

Fragrances (Synthetic)Some perfumes / fragrances contain hundreds ofchemicals. Some, such as methylene chloride arecarcinogenic. Some cause brain damage or are neu-rotoxins. Avoid unless you can be sure they are notcarcinogenic.

Glycolic AcidPenetration enhancer which alters skin structure,allowing other chemicals to penetrate deeper into theskin, increasing the amounts of other chemicals thatreach the bloodstream, skin or sense organs. As a sen-sitizer it can instigate immune system response thatcan include itching, burning, scaling, hives, and blis-tering of skin. Toxicant, neurotoxin, kidney toxicant,gastrointestinal or liver toxicant. Found in creams,lotions, cosmetics.

GMO/Genetically Modified OrganismPlants, animals or foods that have been geneticallymodified, genetically engineered or BT/Biotechnologymodified. Genetic engineering enables scientists tocreate plants, animals and micro-organisms by ma-nipulating genes in a way that does not occur natu-rally. Minimal testing shows that animals fed GMOfeed, refuse to eat it. When force-fed the feed (corn,soy, tomatoes etc.) the animals developed stomachlesions and malformations of organs. GMO food is

ot labeled as such in the U.S. Almost all other countries have banned the use of GMO in food and bodyproducts due to insufficient testing. See GMO section fmore information.

High Fructose Corn Syrup/HFCSHigh fructose consumption has been fingered as acausative factor in heart disease. It raises blood level

of cholesterol and triglycerides. It makes blood cellsmore prone to clotting, and it may also accelerate thaging process. See Sugars, Insulin Resistance and Glycem Index section for more information.

Hydrogenated/Partially Hydrogenated OilsHydrogenated oils contain high levels of trans fats. A trans fat is an otherwise normal fatty acid that ha

een radically changed by high heat. Trans fats arepoison: just like arsenic. Partially hydrogenated oils

ill not only kill you in the long term by producingdiseases like multiple sclerosis and allergies that lead

Hydroquinone A severely toxic and very powerful chemical. Banned

n the United Kingdom, but still used in the U.S.Found in skin lightening products and hair dyes, thichemical alters the skins natural structure inhibitinthe production of Melanin. Without natural pro-tection, the skin is more susceptible to skin cancer.

HydroxymethylcelluloseUsed in cosmetics. Inhalation could cause chemicalpneumon t s.

Isobutylparaben Potential breast cancer risk. Itching, burning and

listering of skin. Found in body products.

Isoproponal/Isopropyl Alcoholoderately toxic chemical causing flushing, pulse ra

decrease, blood pressure lowering, anesthesia, narco-sis, headache, dizziness, mental depression, drowsi-

ess, hallucinations, distorted perceptions, respira-tory depression, nausea, vomiting and coma. Usedto clean/disinfect skin, lower temperatures. Found insome body products.

Kajoic Acid A chemical that inhibits melanin production. Usedin skin lightening products, it damages the skin andmakes it more susceptible to cancer.

Kaolin (Clay)Suffocates and weakens skin. Found in face powdersand cosmetics.

Lacquer Can cause eyelashes to fall out. Found in mascara.

LanolinWhile lanolin itself is skin beneficial, it may containcarcinogenic pesticides such as DDT, lindane, dieldrinand other neurotoxins. Can cause rashes. Found inbody products.

Lye

Can dry and damage skin. Found in bars of soap.

Magnesium Stearate / Stearic AcidMay contain phosphatidyl choline which collapses cellmembranes and selectively kills T-Cells which breaksdown the immune system. An execeptant that is usedto bind medicinal tablets and make them smooth it isalso used in pharmaceuticals, foods, talcum powder,ammunition, and as a drying agent in paints.

Methylisothiazoline, or MITCauses neurological damage. Found in shampoo.

Methyl MethacrylateMay cause fingers and nails to inflame. Found in nailpolish.

MethylparabenPotential breast cancer risk and endocrine disruptorraising concern for impaired fertility or developmentof fetus, and increased risk for certain cancers, itch-ing, burning and blistering of skin. A close cousinof benzoic acid: poisonous and moderately toxic it is

found in body products.

Mineral Oil A derivative of petroleum, this additive clogs pores,locks in toxins, suffocates and dries skin and inhibitsyour skins natural oil production further increasingdehydration. Causes testicular tumors in the fetus,deposits accumulate in the lymph nodes and preventabsorption of vitamin A from the intestines. Found inblush, baby oil, lotions, foundation and creams.

Monosodium Glutamate/MSGMSG is an excitotoxin, which causes nerve damageand allergic reactions. Found in hundreds of foods,often under other names. See our Monosodium Gluta-mate / MSG section for more information

Neotameeotame is a reformulated aspartame that will requi

smaller amounts than aspartame to achieve the samesweetness. Neotame, like aspartame, contains aspar-tic acid, phenylalanine, and a methyl esther. Animalstudies reveal aspartic acid and glutamic acid load onthe same receptors in the brain, cause identical brain sions and neuroendocrine disorders, and act in an adtive fashion. People who are sensitive to processed fre

lutamic acid (MSG) experience similar reactions toaspartame, and people who are sensitive to aspartamexperience similar reactions to MSG. People who cur-rently react to MSG and/or aspartame should expectto react similarly to Neotame. Found in soft drinks,

pharmaceuticals, processed foods of all kinds.

Nitrate – NitriteWhile nitrate itself is harmless; it is readily converteto nitrite. When nitrite combines with compoundscalled secondary amines, it forms nitrosamines:extremely powerful cancer-causing chemicals. Thechemical reaction occurs most readily at the high teperatures of frying. Nitrite has long been suspected being a cause of stomach cancer. ( ee Sodium Nitrite

NitrosaminesExtremely powerful, cancer-causing chemicals format high temperatures when the preservative nitritecombines with compounds called secondary amines

Olestra While fat-free, this additive has a fatal side effect: itattaches to valuable nutrients and flushes them outthe body. Some of these nutrients, called carotenoidappear to protect us from such diseases as lung can-cer, prostate cancer, heart disease, and macular degeeration. Olestra replaces fats in ‘fat-free’ foods.

Padimate-O (PABA)itrosamines, potent carcinogens, may form in

products that contain Padimate-O. There is no way nowing if they have formed. Found in cosmetics an

sunscreens.

Paraffinossible carcinogen. Found in cosmetics and food.

PEG StearatesPotentially contaminated with or breaking down intochemicals linked to cancer or other significant healthproblems. Found in cosmetics, creams and foods.

PEG (Polyethylene, polyethylene glycol, polyoxy-ethylene, oxynol: any ethoxylated compound,including SLES)

May contain ¼-dioxane which is a possible carcino-gen, estrogen mimic and endocrine disruptor. Canonly be removed from a product through vacuumstripping during processing. Avoid all ethyoxylatedproducts as a precaution. Found in foods and bodyproducts.

PEG-12 DistearateMay contain harmful impurities or form toxic break-down products linked to cancer or other significanthealth problems. Found in creams, lotions, cosmeticsand foods.

PEG-80 Sorbitan LaurateMay contain harmful impurities or form toxic break-down products linked to cancer or other significanthealth problems, gastrointestinal or liver toxicity haz-ards. Found in cosmetics, creams, lotions and foods.

Petroleum (Petrolatum)Suffocates skin and traps toxins in body, clogs pores.Found in lotions, skin creams, and body jelly.

bath, pain and wound products, hand sanitizer.

Sodium NitriteMakes meat look red rather than gray, and gives meatan overly long shelf life of months. Clinically provento cause leukemia, brain tumors and other forms ofcancer.

Soy Contains several naturally occurring compounds thatare toxic to humans and animals. Soy foods block

calcium and can cause vitamin D deficiencies. Onehealth agency estimates than 100 grams of soy proteinprovides the estrogenic equivalent of the pill. Process-ing and all modern soy foods contain MSG, whichcause neurological problems. Soy products inhibitthyroid function, which may lead to fatigue and men-tal issues. Infants on soy formula are vulnerable to de- veloping autoimmune thyroid disease when exposedto high amounts of isoflavones over time. These Isofla- vones have been found to have serious health effects,including infertility, thyroid disease or liver disease,on a number of mammals. Long term feeding with soyformulas inhibits thyroid peroxidase to such an extentthat long term elevated thyroid stimulating hormonelevels can also raise the risk of thyroid cancer. It is saidthat two glasses of soy milk a day over the course of amonth contains enough of the chemical to change thetiming of a woman’s menstrual cycle. Genetically Modified Foods, Plants, Animals, Addi-

tives, Body Products, Fish, Crops and Trees have hadtheir genes manipulated, changed, and put into otherspecies that normally they would not mate with, blendwith, consume, or grow in. Hydrogenation of oils, with removal of essential fattacids, is used in the food industry for the sole purpoof prolonging the shelf life of processed foods whichmaximizes their profits.

Hydrogenation

Hydrogenation is the process of heating an oil andpassing hydrogen bubbles through it. The fatty acidsn the oil then acquire some of the hydrogen, which

makes it denser. If you fully hydrogenate, you create solid (a fat) out of the oil. But if you stop part way, yocreate a semi-solid partially hydrogenated oil that haa consistency like butter, only cheaper.

Until the 1970’s, food producers used coconut oil.

The American obesity epidemic began when it wasreplaced with partially hydrogenated vegetable oilusually soybean oil.

Health Hazards of Hydrogenation

Unlike butter or virgin coconut oil, hydrogenatedoils contain high levels of trans fats. A trans fat is an

otherwise normal fatty acid that has been radicallychanged by high heat.

Trans fats are poison: just like arsenic.

Partially Hydrogenated Fat

Partially hydrogenated oils will not only kill you inthe long term by producing diseases like multiplesclerosis and allergies that lead to arthritis, but in themeantime they will make you fat!

If you are consuming lots of saturated fats, you reallyhave no choice but to become fat, because saturated fatscontain only small quantities of the polyunsaturatedfats that contain the essential fatty acids you need. Thekey to being thin, then, is to consume foods containinglarge amounts of polyunsaturated oils. (Those foodsinclude fish, olives, nuts, and egg yolks.) Over the longterm, those foods remove your sense of hunger.

 Your Metabolism Slows Down

Most partially hydrogenated oil is partially hydroge-nated soybean oil. Soybean oil depresses the thyroid,which lowers your energy levels. Product after prod-uct contains partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Theresult: this country is experiencing epidemic levels ofdiabetes, obesity, heart disease, and cancer.

Because a saturated fat is inert, it can’t be hurt muchby heat. If you’re going to fry, fry in a fully saturatedfat like coconut oil or butter, which consists mostlyof short-chain saturated fats that are easily burnedfor fuel, plus conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) whichimproves health and is burned for energy instead ofbeing stored as fat. Also, 50% of coconut oil consists oflauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that’s anti-bac-terial, anti-viral, anti-fungus, and anti-yeast.

SUGARS, INSULIN RESISTANCE AND GLY-CEMIC INDEX

The average American consumes an astounding 2-3pounds of sugar each week, which is not surprisingconsidering that highly refined sugars in the forms ofsucrose (table sugar), dextrose (corn sugar), and high-fructose corn syrup are being processed into so manyfoods such as bread, breakfast cereal, mayonnaise,peanut butter, ketchup, spaghetti sauce, frozen foodsand microwave meals.

altodextrin is also a refined product usually maderom either corn or potatoes. It is very readily ab-

sorbed and has a very high glycemic index.

Dextrose is an industry term for glucose. Glucose isthe most prevalent sugar in humans and is the onlymolecule that the brain can metabolize. Dextrose isrefined from cornstarch. It has a very high glycemic

ndex, as it is glucose!

High fructose corn syrup is made by treating corn(which is usually genetically modified corn) with a variety of enzymes, some of which are also geneticallmodified, to first extract the sugar glucose and thenconvert some of it into fructose. The result is a mix-ture of 55% fructose and 45% glucose, that is called‘high fructose corn syrup.’

In 2001 CORN sweeteners (genetically modified) accounted for 55% of the sweetener market.

Consumption of high fructose corn syrup went fromero in 1966 to 62.6 pounds per person in 2001.

 Per capita intake of refined sugar is almost 150pounds a year. HFCS accounts for 51.7 pounds ofthat, and sucrose for 64.5 pounds, according to theU.S. Department of Agriculture. That translates toabout 60 pounds of fructose per person.

Some of the problems associated with high fructose

corn syrup:

Increased LDL’s (the bad lipoprotein) leading to in-creased risk of heart disease.

 Altered Magnesium balance leading to increasedosteoporosis.

Fructose has no enzymes or vitamins thus robbingthe body of precious micro-nutrients.

Fructose interacts with birth control pills and canelevate insulin levels in women on the pill.

Increased risk of Adult Onset Diabetes Mellitus.

Fructose inhibits copper metabolism leading to adeficiency of copper, which can cause increased boneragility, anemia, ischemic heart disease and defectiv

The glycemic index is a measure of how a given foodaffects blood-glucose levels, with each food being as-signed a numbered rating. The lower the rating, theslower the absorption and digestion process, which

provides a more gradual, healthier infusion of sugarsinto the bloodstream.

HARMFUL INGREDIENTS IN HOUSEHOLDCLEANING PRODUCTS

Look on just about any cleaning product and you willnotice a lack of an ingredient list. Could it be becauseso many have ingredients that are toxic? Here is ashort list of harmful ingredients that are in manyhousehold cleaners and are of particular concernbecause they are carcinogens, endocrine disrupters orknown or suspected reproductive toxins.

Ammonia Irritation to eyes and mucous membranes. Breathing

difficulty, wheezing, chest pains, pulmonary edema,skin burns. High exposure can lead to blindness, lungdamage, heart attack or death.

2-butoxyethanol/ Ethylene glycol butyl ether One of many glycol ethers used as a solvent in carpetcleaners and specialty cleaners. Can be inhaled orabsorbed through the skin and may cause blood dis-orders, as well as liver and kidney damage. May alsocause reproductive damage with long-term exposure.

1,4 dichlorobenzene (1,4 DCB)Has been linked to a reduction in pulmonary func-tion. Found in space deodorizing products, such asroom fresheners, urinal cakes, toilet bowl freshenersand cleaning products it is also used as an insecticidefor moth control.

Ethoxylated nonyl phenols (NPEs)Known as “gender-benders,” nonyl phenols can inducefemale characteristics in male fish, for example. The

threat posed to the environment by nonyl phenolsprompted the European Union to ban them from allcleaning products manufactured or used in the EU.Still used in the U.S.

Methylene chlorideethylene chloride is listed as a possible human car-

cinogen by the International Agency for Research on

Cancer and is commonly found in paint strippers. In1987, regulators in the U.S. compelled manufacturerto put warning labels on products containing methyene chloride.

NaphthaleneEither naphthalene, or another chemical calledparadichlorobenzene, is used in mothballs and mothcrystals. Naphthalene is listed by California’s Officeof Environmental Health Hazards Assessment as asubstance “know to the state to cause cancer,” whileparadichlorobenzene is listed by IARC as a possible

uman carcinogen. Avoid all moth products that cotain either of these two ingredients.

Silica ade from finely ground quartz, silica is carcinogen

as a fine respirable dust. Silica is found in that formn some abrasive cleansers, which are often used on a

regular basis around the home.

TolueneToluene is a potent reproductive toxin, which is used

as a solvent in numerous products, including paintst is also sold as the pure product and is listed by

California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment as a reproductive toxin that may cause

arm to the developing fetus. Pregnant women shouavoid products containing toluene.

Trisodium nitrilotriacetate (NTA)TA is listed as a possible human carcinogen by the

nternational Agency for Research on Cancer. It isused as a builder in laundry detergents and also has

an adverse environmental impact as it can impede thelimination of metals in wastewater treatment plantTA’s action can cause metals that have already

settled out to be re-mobilized back into the liquidaste stream.

Xylene Another extremely toxic ingredient that is often foun

n graffiti and scuff removers, spray paints and someadhesives. A suspected reproductive toxin that has

shown reproductive harm in laboratory experiments,it is also a neurotoxicant that can cause memory losson repeated exposure.

Bleach (Sodium hypochlorite)When bleach is mixed with acids (typically found intoilet bowl cleaners), it reacts with them to form chlo-rine gas. When it is mixed with ammonia, it can create

chloramine gas, another toxic substance.

In the environment, sodium hypochlorite is acutelytoxic to fish. The chlorine in bleach can also bind withorganic material in the marine environment to formorganochlorines, toxic compounds that can persist inthe environment.

There may be some circumstances where bleach use isnecessary for disease control, but there is little needfor it on a regular basis. Tests have shown that wash-ing counters and other surfaces with soap and water

removes most bacteria and there are a number of oxy-gen-based alternatives for laundry uses of bleach.

PhosphatesManufacturers have since reduced or even eliminatedphosphates from laundry products, but no action hasever been taken on dishwasher detergents. Most of theproducts available from major manufacturers contain30-40 per cent phosphates. Some also contain highlevels of chlorine-based sanitizing ingredients.

THE DANGERS OF PESTICIDES TO HUMANS

Pesticides accumulate in the fat deposits in the bodywhere they remain and cause damage. Infants andyoung children consuming breast milk ingest pesticides.Pregnant women can pass pesticides on to their fetus.Women who eat fruits and vegetables that have beensprayed with pesticides, pass the pesticides on to theirnursing children. Women who eat meat that has beeninjected with growth hormones and antibiotics, passthese chemicals on to their nursing children. Childreneating foods that have been treated with hormones,antibiotics or pesticides, have them in their bodies.

‘A study funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and published in the September 2005issue of Environmental Health Perspectives showseating organic foods provides children with “dramaticand immediate” protection from exposure to two

organophosphate pesticides that have been linked toarmful neurological effects in humans.

The pesticides—malathion and chlorpyrifos—whilerestricted or banned for home use, are widely used ona variety of crops, and according to the annual surve

pesticides are still routinely detected in food itemscommonly consumed by young children.

Over a fifteen-day period, Dr. Chensheng “Alex” Luand his colleagues from Emory University, the Uni- versity of Washington, and the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention measured exposure to mala-thion and chlorpyrifos in 23 elementary students inthe Seattle area by testing their urine.

The participants, aged 3-11-years-old, were first montored for three days on their conventional diets befor

the researchers substituted most of the children’s co ventional diets with organic foods for five consecutivdays. The children were then given their normal foodand monitored for an additional seven days.

“Immediately after substituting organic food itemsor the children’s normal diets, the concentration of

the organophosphorus pesticides found in their bodes decreased substantially to non-detectable levels

until the conventional diets were re-introduced,” saidDr. Lu.

During the days when children consumed organicdiets, most of their urine samples contained zeroconcentration of the malathion metabolite. Howeveronce the children returned to their conventionaldiets, the average malathion metabolite concentrationcreased to 1.6 parts per billion with a concentratio

range from 5 to 263 parts per billion. A similar trendas seen for chlorpyrifos. The average chlorpyrifos

metabolite concentration increased from one part peillion during the organic diet days to six parts perillion when children consumed conventional food.

 A second study, published in the February 2006 issuof Environmental Health Perspectives, confirmedthese results. Once again, another group of 23 chil-dren from the Seattle area aged 3-11 years participated. When the conventionally grown foods in their diets were replaced with comparable organically grownoods, concentrations of compounds in the children

urine indicating exposure to organophosphate pes-ticides immediately dropped to non-detectable levels

and remained non-detectable until they once againconsumed conventionally grown foods.

The children were first monitored for three days ontheir normal diet. Then, most of the conventionallygrown items in their diets were replaced with compa-rable organically grown items for 5 days. Substituteditems included fruits and vegetables, juices, processed

fruit and vegetable products and wheat or corn basedproducts. Lastly, the children returned to their nor-mal diets for a further 7 days.

Researchers analyzed two spot daily urine samples,first-morning and before-bedtime voids, throughoutthe 15-day study period. Urinary concentrations ofcompounds indicating the children were ingesting theorganophosphorus pesticides, malathion and chlor-pyrifos, became undetectable immediately after theintroduction of organic diets and remained undetect-able until the conventional diets were reintroduced.’

The repetition of this research clearly demonstratesthat an organic diet provides a dramatic and imme-diate protective effect against exposures to organo-phosphorus pesticides, which are commonly used inagricultural production. Organophosphate pesticidesaccount for approximately half the insecticide usein the U.S. and are applied to many conventionallygrown foods important in children’s diets.

Organophosphates work by poisoning the nervoussystem in pests.
