BaptismsFamilies seeking the Baptism of their children are encouraged to contact the Pastor and arrange amutually agreeable Sunday worship for this sacrament. Baptisms take place within the context of thecommunity of faith; as it is into the Body of Christ, the Church, the child is baptized. Baptism is anoutward and visible sign of the grace of God which is Gods desire to save us from all evil and toreconcile us to Gods self. By this act parents covenant with the church to raise their child in theChristian faith

DeaconsRick Allen, Susan Day, Katie Gesick, Bo Henderson, Russ Jensen, Ann Kloter, Millie Mead,Sherrie Monaco, Kathy Noyes, Lynn Pandiani, Lori Tomko have been elected by the church to thenew Deaconate Class of 2013. They will undergo spiritual formation over the next 18 months, meetingtwice a month, except in Summer, for a total of about 40+ hours, experiencing studies in Prayer, Bible,Church & Society, and Practical Theology (healing; ministering to the sick, dying and grieving;visitation, etc.). Much time is also given to discovering ones Spiritual Gifts and Calling as a layministers in the church.

Deacons To Be Ordained and Commissioned To Lay Ministry

Sunday, January 29, 10:00 amThe Class of 2012: Kris Beezer, Judy Gardner, Leigh Gesick, Bob Jensen, Bob Meyer, PatMoore, Jim Platt, Kathy Sugland will be ordained and commissioned as Deacons and lay ministersof our church, each with their own specialized ministry, based on their spiritual gifts and Calling. They will be actively working out their ministries but in the context of our structure and governance.Deacons will officiate at Baptisms and Communion. They will continue to meet with the pastor forongoing spiritual growth, sharing ideas and concerns regarding ministry and the church; but they willnot have a role in Church Governance. Deacons may join or begin teams, participate on committees orTrustees like anyone else; again, based on their spiritual gifts. Essentially, Deacons will be like salt orleaven, as the Bible says, throughout the church; representing to all of us our own Calling to ministryand discipleship in Jesus Christ.

YaleAn adhoc delegation called together by the Pastor on the recommendation of Bob Jensen will meet onMonday, January 23 with Yale Professor, Miroslav Volf, whose teaching includesCongregationalism. hope to establish an annual celebration of the founding of the College in Old Saybrook in 1701. Thismight be a weekend of lectures, music and fellowship open to the community. The delegation includesBob Jensen (Deacon elect), Jim Platt (Clerk), Craig Fanning (Historian) and Craig Whitcher.

    Healing Service

    Wednesday, January 25

and The Last Wednesday of Each Month at 7:00 pm

    (The Chancel of the Sanctuary)

We all have illnesses of the body heart and soul. We all have friends and family members who suffer.

The Service of Healing is based on the call of Jesus when he sent his disciples out, They cast out

many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick. (Mark 6:13) We know that the cure for

illness of heart and mind begins with the spirit. The order of worship begins with the Word of God,

prayer and repentance; then the anointing with Holy Oils and concluding with the sacrament of

Communion. Come for yourself. Come for those you love.

Our Mission - The Teen Ministry of First Church of Christ in Old Saybrook provides a loving

On December 4th, the First Church Carolers - 14 youth and 8adults - sang Christmas carols at Gladeview Healthcare while

residents were having lunch followed by caroling through theupstairs floors where people are less mobile. Visiting and carolingwas very much appreciated by many who are bed or wheelchairbound and/or do not have family nearby.

The parent contribution towards the mission trip this year is $300 per teen.leaving approx. $6400 tofundraise. Boy was it chaotic downstairs during the month of December! The children were bursting with

excitement. Each Sunday seemed to bring something new to talk about. Our carefully planned

schedule was quickly thrown out the window as almost every child wanted to share something about

Christmaswhen they were getting their tree, decorating, baking cookies and so on. But mostly they

were excited about seeing family and friends and celebrating their traditions.

We hope that you found delight in the childrens gift of the Christmas Tableau. Being part of the story

is something that the children look forward to every year. We even did a pick-up pageant at the 5:00

family service on Christmas Eve. Did anyone see the baby Jesus?

As we move into the winter months, we plan to engage the children in additional activities that will

allow them to take the lessons they have learned and incorporate them into their daily lives. Our first

mission project for the cold months of January and February will be to collect hats and mittens to give

to Youth & Family Services. Also, we will have a special collection jar for donations that will go to

    Operation Fuel.

As always, thank you for sharing your children with us. We look forward to having them all back in

    Sunday School, and remember--keep warm!

Family of the Month Team -- January

Our Family of the Month for January is an elderly senior who is struggling to stay in her home. Sheis trying to live on Social Security and we have helped her with some expenses to keep her heat on at

adequate levels and to be sure she has enough for her other living expenses. Unfortunately the energyprogram this year is awarding many of our seniors only enough money to purchase about a half a tankof oil. Most are already running out. We have helped through our local program as well but it is onlythe beginning of winter and we will need more help to keep this and other seniors warm this winter.

Please call Susan Consoli, the Social Services Coordinator, at 860-395-3188 if you have any questions.Donations may be left in the Church Office with any checks made payable to Youth and FamilyServices. We very much appreciate your continued support. Thank you.

Investment TeamAs mentioned in last years annual report, the Investment Committee recommended to the Board ofTrustees that we consider moving the funds that we currently manage ourselves to professionalmanagement. The Board accepted this recommendation and last summer we proceeded to search for asuitable candidate. The committee met with several prospective managers, and reviewed various

options for handling our investments. After careful consideration, our recommendation was to selectEssex Financial Services to be our investment manager. The Board of Trustees concurred with thisrecommendation, and meetings with Essex Financial Services were held to share additionalinformation and formalize our relationship. The transfer of funds is now in progress. The InvestmentCommittee will continue to meet regularly, provide oversight of our investment manager, and reportquarterly to the Board of Trustees. The members of the Investment Committee are grateful for theconfidence and support of the congregation for our efforts over the last several years, including timesof market turmoil.

    Christian Consistency

In determining what I should share with you for the New Year, I came across an article by Jim Wallis, editor ofSojourners Magazine, and author of the book, Rediscovering Values: A Guide for Economicand Moral Recovery, much of what he says is included in the following:

One of the greatest failures of Christians in this country is when they dont think and act as Christiansfirst. Instead, they think first as Americans, consumers, partisans, and sometimes even as Red Soxfans (a real problem in Old Saybrook, but Wallis favorite team). This leads to bending over backwardto justify un-Christian behavior and attitudes to fit these other identities. The biblical name for thisbehavior is idolatry.

Now, Christians can and do identify as Americans, consumers, partisans, and even Red Sox fans. But,it should never be our first or primary identity. Those other identities should all be subservient andaccountable to our identity in Christ.

The antidote is simple. Christians need to read their Bibles more. It makes a difference.

I was surprised, as were many others, when a headline in Christianity Today a few months ago read,Survey: Frequent Bible Reading Can Turn You Liberal.

While many studies have shown a correlation between frequent church attendance and conservativepolitical views, a new study from Baylor University (considered an evangelical university) shows thatfrequent Bible reading leads to broadening ones concern for social and economic justice.

In fact, Baylor set up a five point scale to measure Bible reading frequency. Participants were asked,"How important is it to actively seek social and economic justice in order to be a good person?" Eachpoint moving up the Bible reading scale correlated with a 35 percent increase in Christians who wouldagree with that statement.

Frequent Bible reading doesnt correlate with any neat political category. Christians must and shouldengage, struggle with, and be accountable to the scriptures. It is what keeps us honest, ensuring thatwe are Christians before we are Americans, consumers, partisans, or Red Sox fans.

A new poll from the Public Religion Research Institute in partnership with Religion News Serviceasked what different Americans favor or oppose when it comes to reducing the federal deficit. Here iswhats surprising: 58 percent of white evangelicals now oppose cutting federal programs that help thepoor, 72 percent oppose cutting federal funding to religious organizations that help the poor, and 60percent favor raising taxes on those that make more than $1 million a year, in order to help reduce thedeficit.

On the following pages, I have re-worked into a survey some (and by no means all) considerationsconcerning what it means to be a Christian. Please take the time to consider your response to eachthought about What It Means To Be A Christian. When you have completed the survey, bring it tochurch, unsigned, and deposit it in the special box in the Connector. After a couple of weeks (I willalso include the survey in the Bulletin for Sunday morning worship) I will review and report back inthe next Tower where we as a church stand in general

    Faithfully,

How do you respond to the following?(Please Drop off at church, unsignedResults in the next TOWER)

    1. It means to believe in God the Creator of all, in Christas our Savior and in the Holy Spirit whom God sends as

    our Comforter and Guide. Agree o o o o o Disagree

    2. It means to draw on religious teachings and beliefs andto be offended whenever media voices pour scorn onreligious people. Agree o o o o o Disagree

    3. To have deep religious convictions when making judgments about matters of public policy. Agree o o o o o Disagree

    4. It means to know that when we, as people of faith, make a public argument, we must ground our statements

in reason and a language of morality that is accessible toeveryone -- to people of different religions, for example,or of no religion. Agree o o o o o Disagree

    5. We recognize that other believers have religiousconvictions different from our own, and in our diversedemocracy, Americans need a common politicaldiscourse not dominated by exclusivist theology. Agree o o o o o Disagree

    6. It means to understand that a "person of faith"does not only mean the Christian; it is, in fact, an inclusive

term, referring to both liberals and conservatives and toChristians and Jews of all persuasions, as well as to Muslims,Hindus and believers from other religious traditions. Agree o o o o o Disagree

    7. It means having a basic understanding of scripture. Agree o o o o o Disagree

    8. It means to always bring a measure of humility to religiousbelief. In making our religious judgments, we persons of faithdraw on the sacred texts of our tradition, but we don't claim to havethe ear of God, and we aren't always sure that we know Godswill, without being tested. Agree o o o o o Disagree

    9. It means praying each day, giving praise and thanksto God for yourself and others and seeking Gods helpin all things. Agree o o o o o Disagree

    10. It means being concerned about the poor and the needy, and giving a fair shake to all. When people talk about God andyet ignore justice, it feels downright wrong to us. When theycloak themselves in religion and ignore mercy, it strikesus as blasphemous. Agree o o o o o Disagree
