The Problem Is the Problem and Why Jesus Had To DieRev. Dr. Craig Whitcher

Larry Peters of the Alban Institute in Washington D.C., a church consulting firm, writes that one of theprimary kinds of stories that takes hold of a nation, a community or a congregation and makes changedifficult is what is known in narrative therapy as the problem-saturated story, or one in which thefocus is on who or what is or has been wrong with the__________.(fill in the blank)

Have you ever been in a group and someone begins to say how awful something is in the world(nation, town or congregation), and before you know it the rest of the group cant help but chime inwith more evidence for how truly bad and impossible the situation is. Peters says, We can almost hearourselves saying, even if the words arent verbalized, You think thats bad, let me tell you whats evenworse than that!

This is called a Problem-Saturated Story which tends to have the impact of being taken as fact ratherthan as a narrative created by a particular sorting and choosing of facts, often by people with aparticular bias or fear.

We can easily succumb to the power of the problem-saturated story and, in fact, can become a mainstorytellerif not the main characterin many of these stories.

This was part of the reality of problem-saturated story telling around the decision of the Chief Priestsand Pharisees in Jerusalem who feared Jesus, that he would cause unrest both for their system ofTemple Worship and their tenuous hold on self-rule under Roman occupation. The story they told toeach other led to the arrest of Jesus. Then, convincing themselves of his blasphemy in a phonyecclesiastical trial, they brought him before Pilate for a verdict of treason in order that Jesus could beexecuted.

You see, once the Temple leaders externalized the problem they believed they were facing, rather thanconsidering that there might be a problem with the institution, they readily found a scapegoat in thisJesus who was becoming overwhelmingly popular. Indeed the people were calling him the Messiah. Asolution to their fear of the possible coming end of their system of religious institutional rule pointedto this Jesus must die for the sake of their status, riches, power and continuing rule. When Jesusdied, his own disciples at first succumbed to their own problem-saturated-story. Many fell away,

others doubted, like Thomas, even as the new story of the resurrection was told. But soon the newreality and witness (story) of those who saw and experienced the resurrected Jesus allowed theleadership of The Way (which is what the new church of Jesus Christ was called) to be freed up torecognize more of the situation than is usually allowed in our typical discourses about whats wrong.Larry Peters writes: In the externalizing conversations, often a new kind of conversationwhatMichael White, one of the originators of narrative therapy, calls a re-authoring conversationbeginsto emerge. Re-authoring conversations, he explains, invite people to continue to develop and tellstories about their lives, but in terms of how we may have encountered the Spirit of God in thosestories.

We call this giving testimony but it can also help people include some of the more neglected butpotentially significant events and experiences that are, indeed, out of phase with their previousdominant storylines. This is what AA groups or a small faith group does in moving us from wherewe tend to find ourselves in our life story to seeing where the purpose of God is guiding us. Thus weare able to reauthorize our story and the conversation to what we see happening in our world, community and church. These events and experiences can be considered unique outcomes orexceptions.

In essence, the faith witnesses, Apostles and Gospel writers preached, Dont cave in to your sense ofdespair and hopelessness. The Gospels and Epistles remind us of who we are outside of the problemswe face and encourage us to do what we knew how to do when we were not estranged from God: loveGod with all our heart and soul and strength and our neighbor as ourselves, promote the well-being ofthe place where we live. These actions are the start of a new story. Christ seeks to help us tore-author our story in the midst of turmoil.

The Gospels are all about re-authoring the story of our lives today with the story of Jesus Christ, personally, and on all the levels. The Psalmist ponders, How can we sing the songs of the Lord whilein a foreign land? (Psalms 137:4) As a religious church leader, I, too, ponder how we can sing in themidst of a world in turmoil. Dare I be prophetic in preaching the Gospel when it can get me intotrouble with the powers and principalities about me. Even in the midst of trouble or uncertainty, Iknow in my heart that I must be able to help the people of our congregation stand outside the

mesmerizing effects of the problem-saturated story. The narrative I must preach must be resilient andresourceful enough to resist internalizing the situation. Instead, by recognizing that the problem is theproblem, the conversation I can facilitate is one that studies with curiosity the dynamic effects of theproblem on the health, capacities, and faithfulness of the congregation.

Larry Peters writes that shifting the relationship to the problem comes only when the congregationcan examine these effects and deeply and resoundingly say, No, we dont want to continue with theseeffects of the problem. Then a threshold to a new possibility for the congregation emerges. This newthreshold arises when the leader is able to ask, What would you consider instead? Where would youlike to be headed? What would be the first sign that we are moving in that new direction?Peters continues: These questions help point a congregation, a community, a nation toward the

possibilities and directions that are inherent in a situation but often obscured by our usual problem-saturated approaches to the situation.

The cumulative effect of all this allows for a conversation about possibilities. What can be morepowerful for the church or any group than discovering what it really cares about? This church hasdone that every time it searches for a pastor or minister. The question may be have we done itseriously and honestly. We need to continue to ask ourselves as we face challenges to our ministrytogether, Whats possible? not Whats wrong? It takes courage to begin such a conversation onwhat matters. And, I quickly add, is what matters the leanings of the Holy Spirit?

    STATEMENT ON STEWARDSHIP GIVING

The Wellesley Congregational Church in Massachusetts

Contributions to church are an Offering. We do not give to the church simply to support a cause or to pay toward what we like. We do so as anact of devotion, as a form of worship. It is important to demonstrate our gratitude toward anddependence upon God through an offering of our lives, including that by which we make a living, money. Our sacrifice is a symbolic response, in kind, for the sacrifice God has made for us in JesusChrist.

Well get a large recycling container on premises in April, so everyone who uses our building candispose of material conveniently (youll recall that volunteers have been toting recycling to the transferstation). The system is single stream, so we can mix metal plastic and paper.

    Board of Trustees

Spring is here and so is budget season.

The Board has already started having meetings and discussions with group leaders on requests for nextyears budget. We will most likely wrap-up our discussions, put together a high-level plan, andpresent it to the Congregation sometime in May. We would appreciate if as many members as possiblecan make it to that meeting so the Board is well aware of the churchs desires. The meeting will beannounced and advertised as far in advance as possible.

On a lighter note, the Board has approved a lease for a new copier. Part of the agreement includes amaintenance contract so we will no longer have to cringe every time something goes wrong. Further,we have approved a contract with Johns that will include recycling pick-up from the church. That

said, all members should take extra care to dispose of items that are recyclable in the proper containers,as failing to do so will increase our waste removal costs.

Thank you for taking the time to get brought up on the business end of the church and, as always, please feel free to come to Board of Trustees meetings as we discuss the budget for next year.Meetings are the second Monday of each month.

    Sincerely,Derrik M. Kennedy, Chairman

    Legacy Team

Time to act on new Legacy Fund proposalAt our last congregational meeting, it was voted to start spending a small amount from The LegacyFund. We have never taken any money out of the Legacy Fund, but it is large enough now to supportsome annual withdrawals and still keep growing. This fund offers a great opportunity to support themission and ministry of First Church in addition to what we do with our regular annual budget. Ifyou are interested in helping develop this new initiative, leave your name in the church office, or watchfor other sign up opportunities.

Please extend a warm thank you to your congregation for their generosity toward HOPEPartnership and its mission. Your gift of $1,393 from the Christmas Eve Offering was deeplyappreciated.

Giving to HOPE Partnership is more than donating money. Its investing in the future.Connecticut has lost jobs, businesses and young adults faster than any other state for the last 20

years and research tells us that this is directly related to the lack of affordable housing. As themarket forces continue to drive up housing costs in our area, and housing becomes even moreout of reach for moderate wage earners, HOPE Partnership is dedicated to developingaffordable housing opportunities for families and individuals living and working in SouthernMiddlesex County.
