Dear Friends, Did you enjoy the Olympics? I found myself watching more than ever before and marvelling at what the athletes achieved through determination, perseverance and good coaches. What struck me even more was what a difference the crowd made with their fantastic support. ‘Going it alone’ is always much harder and yet so many of us seem to try to do that when trouble is on the horizon. We think we must be independent. ‘No-one will be interested, after all our friends lead such busy lives and they might think I’m a fool’, are the sort of things we say to ourselves. Yet the old saying about a trouble shared is a trouble halved certainly rings true. How often have you said to your friends ‘I wish you had told me before!’ What is it that stops us sharing our troubles? Pride, guilt, shame or just plain fear. I like the acrostic for fear I was taught many years ago—False, Expectations, Appearing Real—so much of what we fear isn’t real. Real love casts out fear and actually real friends want us to trust them with our problems and to share our troubles because they love us. It’s the same with our heavenly Father, who loves us so much, so perfectly, that he gave his Son so that we might know the extent of his love and experience freedom from all fear. He never rests from his unconditional love for each one of us, he waits for us to trust him with our problems and he is never too busy to help. His love shows that none of us are too insignificant for him to care. He is always ready to listen, he understands every situation and he will show us the way, his way, which is always far better than trying to go it alone! God bless, Vicky Fleming

Recent Events

Tuesday 10th July - a talk was to be given by John Jameson-Davis on

“Secrets in Handwriting”, however he did not arrive. This is the first time a speaker or entertainer has failed to turn up; bingo and a chat was a suitable

alternative in the circumstances.

Tuesday 17th July - our outing to Beaulieu Motor Museum,

House & Garden was very interesting, as there are many attractions and special events programmes this year, one

example being the James Bond film display. This exhibition shows cars and equipment used in many of the films. The

route to Beaulieu took us through the New Forest.

Tuesday 14th August - an afternoon social gathering at

the South Marston Hotel. The Cream Tea was a smashing spread with extra scones and tea, as much as we could

eat. The staff were exceptionally helpful.

Future Events

Tuesday 11th September at 2.00pm in the Village Hall. A talk will be given by Ron

Hoskins on “Beekeeping”.

Wednesday 19th September.

An outing has been arranged to the Houses of Parliament. The coach will depart from the school at 8.45am, arrive back

at South Marston at about 7.00pm.

Tuesday 9th October at 2.00pm in the Village Hall.

A talk will be given by Jon King on “Auctioneering and Valuation”.

Tuesday 16th October Our Harvest Lunch will be held at Blunsdon House Hotel at 12.00 noon.

Could Employer Supported Volunteering Work For You? Businesses and the public sector are becoming increasingly interested in how their own employees can become involved in volunteering. Many and varied programmes are being set up to assist employees to volunteer, whether during work hours or in their own time. This is called employer supported volunteering (ESV). . Involve Swindon is Swindon’s ESV partnership project. It is a network of companies, statutory bodies and voluntary organisa-tions that, together, encourage employees to give their time and develop their skills through volunteering in the local community. So far in 2012, Involve Swindon has found employee volunteers for more than 21 different charity, community and school projects ranging from decorating classrooms to clearing community gardens or areas of wasteland to helping run CV writing and inter-view skills sessions. Recent projects in the Swindon area include making over the garden at Toothill Farmhouse, painting numerous classrooms and corridors for various schools, helping the Mechanics Trust with a recent office move, clearing hundreds of metres of canal towpaths and supporting the MS Therapy Centre with marketing consultancy. Involve Swindon is keen to hear from any charities, schools, community organisations or other non-profits who think they may have a project that could benefit from the support of employee volunteers. Have a look at the case studies on our website www.involveswindon.co.uk for examples of completed projects. Typically projects should be able to be completed in a day, have a fun element to them as well as a tangible benefit to the community. If you think you would like to get involved with Involve Swindon, e-mail Jo at [email protected] or call 01793 420 557.

Recent Events

On Monday 2nd July Eric Barnes very kindly allowed us to hold our BBQ in his barn. Luckily the weather was kind to us which added to the enjoyable evening of food, wine and entertainment.

On Saturday 18th August we held our Annual Flower & Produce Show. Although the season has been dreadful to the point of considering cancelling the show, we went ahead anyway. With thanks to all the people who put the effort in to show what they had, the day proved to be the right decision, with a variety of exhibits making the show a success.

The results of the show are as follows:

Photography Cup - Gill King

Hanging Basket Cup - Mary Case

Children's Cup - Alexander Naisby

Bill Smith Trophy - best dahlia - Angela Newton

Geoff Sansum Trophy - best standard fuchsia - Richard Sansum

Rose Bowl - flowers - Pat Sansum

Since our last update, the two bridges over the ditch have been

erected. There is still a bit of work to do to finish off the ends but they

are looking magnificent!

Our last working day on 4th August was cut short by

heavy rain, but we still managed to clear the far side of the

ditch, trim back the hazel bushes, do a bit more work on

the pond, and enlarge our nursery beds to

provide a temporary home for the hundreds of perennial

wildflower plants we’ve grown from seed. These will

be planted out around the site as more areas are cleared.

The wildlife is very much in residence – we’ve spotted

frogs, newts and numerous mini-beasts, including bees, butterflies,

bugs, bush crickets and hoverflies.

On Saturday 15th September there will be an evening bat walk in the

village led by Dr Danielle Linton from the Swindon Twilight Bat

Project and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. The walk will be preceded by a

short talk. For more details, please look out for posters around the

village and on the website, or contact us (details below).

The next working day is on Saturday 8th September. All volunteers

will be welcomed with open arms!

For further information, please call Barry on 826697 or Susan on

824957, or email [email protected]. You can also read

Recycling charity appeals for your unwanted domestic white goods

Since Refurbiz was established in 2003, more than 8000 low income families in Wiltshire have benefited from around 12,000 quality, reconditioned, white goods at prices they can afford. However, in the current economic environ-ment we are struggling to source enough feedstock to service our demand.

With people hanging on to their old models & machines for longer we are increasingly in need of unwanted free standing electric cookers, washing machines, dryers and refrigeration. We simply can’t meet the demand for them and if the economy continues to be slow and more people find themselves in difficulties, the demand is only going to go higher.

So please, if you are replacing any white goods, particularly electric cookers and working fridges, phone us and we will come out and remove them free of charge. We screen the goods, restore those that can be repaired and then pass them onto those in need. Typically, the cost of a washing machine or cooker comes to about £85 with a three month warranty – vastly lower than buying new goods from the stores. So, if you have any white goods you no longer want and wish to donate, you can help a family in need by contacting Refurbiz on 01380 720200. Refurbiz operates out of the Hopton Park Industrial Estate in Devizes, and supplies refurbished white goods across Wiltshire and Swindon. The charity was set up by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust nine years ago to encourage electrical waste to be reused for the benefit of those in need. It is an independent not-for-profit charity supported by self-generated income and charitable grants.
