IntroductionThank you for purchasing an AERO Specialties’ towbar head. When used properly, this piece of

equipment will provide years of towing pleasure for everyone who uses it, especially those with

diminished upper body strength.

AERO Specialties constructs all of its towbar heads from high-quality materials, and assembles them

with durable and efficient components. As with any piece of ground support equipment, parts will

need to be replaced occasionally because of normal wear-and-tear.

Although AERO Specialties warranties its towbar heads for one year (see Warranty section below for

more information), we are dedicated to helping you keep your equipment in operation for many

years. AERO stocks all replaceable parts for its heads, and manufactures its own head components.

All parts are available for order through AERO’s secure online store (www.aerospecialties.com) –

with a credit card or a PO# if you have an account with us. Of course you can still order parts the

old fashioned way by giving us a call.

General Information and Operating InstructionsPreliminary Checklist• Check all welds on towbar head for cracks

• Check all bolts for proper torque (if applicable); torque chart is located in APPENDIX B

• Check shear bolt for cracks. Replace if cracked, broken, or bent. Replace spare shear bolts if missing.

Usage Procedure

Aircraft AttachmentIt is recommended that you attach the towbar head and towbar to the aircraft first, and then connectit to the tug to avoid potential aircraft damage.

Tug Attachment for Pushback OperationsDamage to the towbar or aircraft can result from an incorrect towbar angle during pushback opera-tions. For maximum capacity pushbacks, the aircraft attachment should ideally be about 2” (5cm)higher than the tug attachment. This is especially true for 2-wheel drive tugs where only 30% of thetug weight is in the front. See Figure 1 and 2 below.

Use of Proper TugUsing the proper class of tug for the pushing or towing application is perhaps the most importantconsideration for safe and secure aircraft movements. Using a tug that is too large or too small fora particular aircraft greatly increases the potential for damage to equipment and injury to personnel.The table below provides a guideline for matching the proper tug to particular aircraft.

Using a Category 2, 3 or 4 tractor - which generates 3 to 10 times the required force - to pushCategory 1 aircraft can increase pushback problems caused by excessive power. Aircraft pushbackincidents increase because the towbar and nose gear are not rated to absorb the excessive powerof these larger tugs.

Towing OperationDamage to the towbar or aircraft can result frompushing an aircraft at too sharp an angle betweenthe tug and the aircraft. Contact between the tugand the towbar tube must be avoided. DO NOTEXCEED a 90-degree angle between the tug andtowbar. (See Figure 4)

HitchesAERO Specialties recommends E-hitchstyle hitches (see Fig. 3).

All AERO Specialties towbars featurelimited rotation of towbar eye-bolt,which prevents binding of towbar ontug hitch.

TrainingTraining RequirementsThe employer of the operator is responsible for providing a training program sufficient for the safeoperation of the towbar.

Training ProgramThe employer-provided operator training program should cover safety procedures concerning use ofthe towbar in and around all aircraft types expected to be serviced at the particular facility.

Maintenance, Service & SupportMaintenance and trouble-shooting are to be performed by skilled and trained mechanics only. Thisproduct cannot be modified without the written approval of AERO Specialties. Any modificationsdone without written approval voids all warranties and releases AERO Specialties, its suppliers, dis-tributors, employees, or financial institutions from any liability from consequences that might occur.

Any questions about operation, maintenance, and/or functionality of AERO Specialties towbar equip-ment not answered by this manual should be directed to AERO Specialties directly at 208-378-9888,or [email protected].

WarrantyAERO Specialties products are warranted to be free of manufacturing or material defects for a periodof one year after shipment to the original customer. This is solely limited to the repair or replace-ment of defective components. This warranty does not cover the following items:

a) Parts required for normal maintenance

b) Parts covered by a component manufacturers warranty

c) Replacement parts have a 90-day warranty from date of shipment

If you have a problem that may require service, contact AERO Specialties immediately. Do notattempt to repair or disassemble a product without first contacting AERO Specialties, as any actionmight affect warranty coverage. When you contact AERO, be prepared to provide the following infor-mation:

a) Product Model Number

b) Product Serial Number

c) Description of the problem

If warranty coverage is approved, either replacement parts will be sent or the product will have to bereturned to AERO Specialties for repairs. A decision on the extent of warranty cover-age on returnedproducts is reserved pending inspection at AERO Specialties. Any shipments to AERO must beshipped freight prepaid.

Appendix A Radial & Linear Shear Forces: AERO Specialties TOWBAR HEADSThe following chart shows the linear (push-pull) and radial (side-to-side)force required to break the active shear bolt in towbar heads equippedwith shear protection (such towbar heads have one active and twospare shear bolts). All towbar heads with built-in shear protection areshipped with Grade 5 shear bolts.
