The survey was conducted by the Thessaloniki HotelsAssociationand GBR Consulting.

According to the survey, the vast majority of leisure and business travelers (91-93 percent) wouldstrongly recommend Thessaloniki to others. The survey focused on features directly connected with the

city that promote it as a “city break” destination for markets abroad.In terms of hotel performance, Thessaloniki recorded a 4.3 percent drop in occupancy during theJanuary-October 2013 period compared with the year before. The decline in occupancy was accompaniedby a five percent fall in the average room rate – the lowest level since 2007 – ranking Thessaloniki in thelowest position among 26 European cities.More into the survey, visitors to Thessaloniki spend an average of 62-71 euros per day on sightseeing,eating, shopping, etc. Tourists tend to book lower-category hotels (one- and two-stars) in order to spendmore money on activities in the city (73.04 euros). However, the survey showed that guests of five-starhotels were the biggest spenders (92.5 euros per day).The survey also showed that the average length of stay in Thessaloniki for business reasons was 3.5 nightsand 3.9 nights for for leisure travel. Most travelers that visit Thessaloniki are 30 to 50 years of age.ADVERTISMENT

Main statistical findingsOccupancy rates of bed places•

Data on occupancy rates of bed places for the most recent reference month available are compared with the same month of the previous year. In

addition - and to smoothen fluctuations - data from January to the most recent available month of the current year are compared with the same periodone year earlier (see Figure 1).Compared with September 2012, net occupancy rates of bed places in the European Union decreased by 1.3 percentage points in September 2013 (seeTable 1). Looking at the individual countries' data, in September 2013 these rates ranged from 30.8 % in Slovakia to 81.3 % in Cyprus (see Figure 2).Looking at the nine months' period from January to September 2013, net occupancy rates of bed places in the EU increased by 0.5 percentage pointscompared with the same period of the previous year (see Table 1). With 66.4 %, 63.7 %, 61.1 % and 60.7 % respectively, Cyprus, Malta, Greece andCroatia were the Member States with the highest occupancy rates in hotels and similar establishments during this period.

Data on occupancy rates of bedrooms from July to September 2013 are compared with the same months of the previous year (see Table 2) (please notethat aggregates for EU-28 and from January to the most recent available month of the current year are not available for bedroom occupancy rates).In September 2013, occupancy rates of bedrooms in hotels and similar accommodation of EU Member States where data is available ranged from38.4 % in Slovakia to 86.4 % in Malta.More than three out of four of the available bedrooms in Malta, Cyprus and the United Kingdom, have been in use, while the corresponding rates inSerbia and Slovakia were less than 40 % (see Figure 3).

Greece experienced its best October of all time last month in terms of international arrivals to the country’s airports, according to the Association of Greek TourismEnterprises (SETE).International arrivals to Greece in October jumped 21.52 percent compared to 2012.During the January-October 2013 period, international arrivals to Greece’s main airports recorded a double-digit increase of 10.93 percent compared with the sameperiod of the previous year, data provided by SETE showed.

The Greek capital welcomes more arrivalsAlso, destination Athens is on its way of making a comeback , SETE noted.International arrivals to Athens International Airport in October increased by 13.24 percent while during the 10 first months of the year – and for the first time – the total of

Greek tourism has exceeded 17 million foreign arrivals on an annual basis for the first time ever, without even having to wait for 2013 to end. The record is notexpected to last for long, though, as 2014 is promising to be an even better year in terms of holidaymaker numbers.Data released recently by the Bank of Greece showed that the number of arrivals from abroad grew 15.5 percent in the first 10 months of the year from the same periodin 2012 to reach 17.08 million.The all-time record for tourism revenues, dating from 2008, is also expected to be broken this year, as revenues (including from cruise tourism) up to the end of Octoberhad already come to 11.6 billion euros – just a few million short of the record for the whole of 2008 – posting annual growth of 14.8 percent. The revenues record willcertainly be smashed with the inclusion of the data for the last couple of months of the year.The biggest increase in arrivals in the year to end-October was from Russia (55.2 percent), as tourists from that country numbered 1.34 million. Arrivals from the USgrew 29.2 percent to reach 434,500, from France the total rose by 18.4 percent to come to 1.13 million, while from Germany they climbed by 7.6 percent to 2.2 million.Arrivals from Britain fell 4.6 percent to 1.8 million.

October arrivals reached an all-time record for the 10th month of the year, rising 18.1 percent from 2012 to reach 1.54 million.All signs point to an even better year in 2014 for tourism both in terms of arrivals and revenues. Bookings via foreign tour operators are up and theirrepresentatives are already making estimates for additional growth in arrivals. Furthermore, air carriers have planned for 1 million additional seats to Greece for 2014.The Greek presidency of the European Union in the first half of next year will also add to the country’s positive publicity. Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni: Signs for 2014 season ‘promising’Athens.- Tourist arrivals totalled 2,963,000 in September, up 17.5 pct compared with the same month last year, the Bank of Greece said on Thursday.The central bank, in a report, said that tourist arrivals were up 15.2 pct in the January-September period, surpassing the 15.5 million figure.This development helped travel revenues rise by 17.3 pct in September, or 14.4 pct in the nine-month period.Travel revenues grew by 26.4 pct from Germany (compared with September 2012), totalling 355 million euros, from France revenues jumped 50.1 pct to 131 million euros,and from the UK revenues fell 12.3 pct to 265 million euros. Revenues from Russia grew 43 pct to 275 million euros, while travel revenues from the US jumped 80.3 pct to79 million euros.This year’s strong performance of tourism indicates that the government’s reforms have helped the country regain its competitiveness, Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogiannisaid on Thursday.“It would not be an exaggeration to say that 2013 was really one of the best years for the Greek tourism,” Kefalogianni said adding that the messages for the new touristseason are also promising.Kefalogianni was speaking at a Conference on Tourism, organized by the Hellenic-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Thessaloniki.In order to continue the positive climate, we have to remain competitive in the global tourism market and continuously improve the products we offer, she noted. “We haveto make the most of Greece’s natural wealth, its particular features as well as its rich tradition. Its strong name makes it one of the most attractive destinations in the world,”she said.Kefalogianni also stressed the need for upgrading infrastructure and investing in innovation.Russian deputy Tourism minister sees Russian tourist wave to GreeceRussian Deputy Tourism Minister Yevgeny Pisarevsky said on Friday that more than 1.2-1.3 million Russian tourists are expected to visit Greece in 2014, compared with aprevious estimate of 1 million.

Speaking at a tourism conference in Thessaloniki, Pisarevsky said that Russians feel comfortable in Greece, partly thanks to the positive attitude of the people, andstressed that the common religion plays an important role in boosting tourism. Pisarevsky mentioned that Greek tourists in Russia have also increased by 35 percent.Lastly, he expressed his hope that the Greek Presidency of the EU will accept a proposal to allow Russians to make transit stops of up to 72 hours without visas in 20 EUcountries.Greece could attract up to 3.6 million tourists a year in five years from now, under specific preconditions, Russian Deputy Tourism Minister said in an interview with theANA-MPA on Thursday, on the occasion of his attendance of Thessaloniki’s 29th international Philoxenia tourism exhibition by the TIF-Helexpo.He added that 2015 “must be proclaimed a Greece-Russia tourism year”, on the model of corresponding actions that took place for example with China, which increasedthe tourist wave on both sides up to 60 percent.“Your neighbouring Turkey receives every year about 3.6 million tourists who, according to data by the Bank of Russia, provide the country with some 4.6 billion dollars. Ido not think that these figures are something impossible for Greece. The possibilities exist and we must turn them into practice. Greece can have the best summer periodin Europe, but we must ‘abolish’ the ‘high’ season, to make way for 12-month tourism. There are plenty of attractions within Thessaloniki to keep even the most avid and energetic sightseer fully occupied during a holiday. However, Thessaloniki isconveniently close to many other Greek attractions, which lie just a short distance outside of the city itself.

Close by are the sandy beaches around the Halkidiki Peninsula, a large choice of recreational attractions at Mount Olympus, and some ancient remains at Pella.Also close to Thessaloniki and now listed as a World Heritage attraction, the Royal Tombs of Vergina are located alongside the remains of an expansive palatial

complex, and not to be missed.

Halkidiki PeninsulaThe scenic Halkidiki Peninsula has become a major holiday destination for locals from Northern Greece and Thessaloniki, and is famous for its three finger-like

projections, which stretch into the North Aegean Sea. Kassandra is the first of the Halkidiki Peninsula's 'fingers' and is filled with fairly run-of-the-mill holiday villasand attractions, while Sithonia, the second 'finger', is much more appealing and contains some truly exceptional beaches. Between both Kassandra and Sithonia

there are actually more than 500 km / 310 miles worth of beaches, so you can expect to easily find a quiet spot to relax on the sands. The third' finger' of theHalkidiki Peninsula is where you will find Mount Athos, where a monastic community dwells and only allows male pilgrims to visit.

Mount OlympusMount Olympus is conveniently close to Thessaloniki and is actually the tallest mountain in the whole of Greece. Many quality attractions are to be found around

Mount Olympus, including a very popular coastline towards Platamonas, and a major archeological site at Dion. At the very base of the mountain, Litohoro is agood base for a range of seasonal activities, including climbing, although is also a good spot to simply enjoy some excellent views of Mount Olympus itself.

PellaBest known in Greece for being the actual birthplace of Alexander the Great, the village of Pella is located along the Thessaloniki to Edessa road. The main

attractions in Pella and the plentiful ancient mosaics, which were created many centuries ago using naturally coloured stones to create elaborate patterns andpictures. A number of these spectacular mosaics remain in situ and in the open-air, while others have been carefully relocated to Pella's museum. Interestingly,

Pella was actually the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia.

VeriaWith in excess of 70 different churches, Veria has earned itself the nickname of the 'Little Jerusalem' and although the attractions of this town are really quite

appealing, it is often overlooked by tourists visiting this region of Greece. Veria is located approximately 75 km / 47 miles to the west of Thessaloniki and boasts ahistorical Jewish Quarter, innumerable traditional Turkish houses, and many mineral springs. If you visit at the right time of the year, you many be able to take

advantage of the bountiful crops of peaches and grapes, or alternatively, sample some of Veria's delicious wines.

VerginaVergina is extremely close to Veroia and lies just 11 km / 7 miles to the south-east, although is around 75 km / 47 miles from the city of Thessaloniki itself. A very

notable burial site for the past Macedonian kings, Vergina is home to the truly wonderful Royal Tombs.

Doirani and Prespa LakesFor something quite different to city life in Thessaloniki, do consider visiting the lakes of Doirani and Prespa, which are close to the Macedonian and Albanian

borders respectively. The Balkan scenery here is quite beautiful from every possible angle and there is plenty of scope for a spot of bird watching if you are soinclined.

Well, what are the top things to see in the Thessaloniki? We made our top-10 with the most characteristic sights of the city.




1. White Tower

The symbol of our city at the seaside, a 500-year-old sea fort and later a prison. Now it is the Museum of the City of Thessaloniki and its top floor offers a great view to the sea andthe city. No visit to Thessaloniki would be complete without at l east a photo in front of the White Tower! You can read more info in our article on The White Tower.

2. Archaeological MuseumGreece is full of ancient artifacts and Thessaloniki does have its fair share of them! At the Archaeological Museum you can see a lot of great stuff from the city's prehistoric,Macedonian and Roman civilization. The museum is not huge – you can easily tour it within an hour if you are not a huge history lover. The museum's official site is here (InEnglish).

3. Museum of Byzantine CultureThessaloniki was the Byzantine Empire's second most important city and there are so many things to admire from this period. The museum won the 2005 Museum Prize of theEuropean Council. The museum's official site is here .

4. The seasideThessaloniki's most important tourist attraction to our opinion! The seaside walk is a Thessalonican favourite summer evening pastime – do it like a true Thessalonican and takeyour time stolling the 4,5-km walk from the port's Pier 1 to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall! 5. Aristotelous SquareThessaloniki's most central square, a great place to have a coffee and stroll from the sea to Venizelos' statue. You can also find the City of Thessaloniki's central information kiosk atthe centre of the square. 6. Kapani and Modiano MarketsThe central food markets of Thessaloniki, exactly to the west of Aristotelous Sq. At Kapani Market you can see and taste a very lively aspect of Thessaloniki's life – plus you will finda lot of shops selling fresh produce, spices and cheap household items. The next-door covered Modiano Market is a quite melancholic place, as it has most of its shops closednowadays, but it is always interesting to admire the early-20th century architecture and eat at the old-school tavernas inside the market.

7. Agios Dimitrios BasilicaThessaloniki's most famous Byzantine church, the place of martyrdom of St. Demetrius. Many visitors visit the city j ust for a visit to the basilica and its catacombs – a great place toworship and to admire the architecture. Don't forget to visit the catacombs!

8. The RotondaA large cylindrical Roman structure built by the Roman emperor Galerius. We still don't know what it was built for, but it was converted into a Christian church during Byzantine timesand into a mosque during Ottoman times. It is still used as a church once a month. It is surely worth a quick visit.Tip: it is in the centre of the student residence area of Thessaloniki, hence you will find great student spots nearby.

9. LadadikaNext to the port, the old oil-merchants' quarter that was once a notorious dodgy district of the city, converted into a great entertainment area in the 1990s. Nowadays it is full of greatrestaurants, classy bars and some tacky clubs. Great for lunch, dinner or a glass of beer.

10. Ano PoliThe area north of Agiou Dimitriou Str., the only part of the city that survived the great fire of 1917. It is a great place to admire the view and get intentionally lost in the alleys. AnoPoli is a quiet residential area, full of small two-storey houses and streets with little traffic. If you are careful you will see the life of the village-like neighbourhood and find its quietlittle spots. It's a steep area of the city, so in order not to get tired, take the bus to Trigoniou Tower to admire the view and work your way down.Tip: We've compiled a walk that connects most of these top-10 a ttractions of the city, loaded with lots of info on each one. Lovely cityLovely city. You can find cheap accommodation in the city center (within 20 euro/night). Also in the city center you can find food for all budgets (from 2.5 euro agyros or 1 a hot dog or sandwich, to 15 euro a nice lunch or dinner). Water costs 50 cents a bottle of 0.5 l.From the airport its easy acces to city center by bus 78, you can buy ticket from the bus and it costs 90 cents, or from kiosk and costs 80 cents.If you want to go to the beach, you can take from city center the bus 2, 3 or 8 which goes to IKEA and from there bus 72 which takes you to the nice beach Perea.The trip takes about 1.5 hour.I recommend to visit the Museum of Byzantine culture and the Museum of Archeology, also the inside of White Tower and the old city which is situated on the hill,

not far from white tower.You should be very carefull with your wallet and other goods, keep them close to you!Posted on 12/8/2012 by Andrew

A look at Byzantine cultureI've always had an interest in Byzantine culture since high school, so a trip to the Museum of Byzantine was always going to feature high on my agenda. Vivacious and vibrantAs a Canadian, European haunts such as Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki are just fascinating to me. This was my favourite place to hang out in the city and Ialways made sure that I met my friends there if we were meeting close to the centre. The city's landmarkPeople rate Aristotelous Square highly but I personally favoured The White Tower. I mean, what is there not to like about it? It has a great observation deck thatallows you to look far into the distance and is Thessaloniki's main landmark.Posted on 27/11/2009 by Pete Hickman

Re. Thessaloniki's best templeFrank Davies, please try the Church of Ayia Sofia also if you didn't last time. It is the Byzantine beauty that you are speaking of buddy. Thessaloniki's best templeI thought that the Church of Crypt of Ayios Dimitrios was Thessaloniki's best temple and it was incredibly close to the centre of the city. Obviously it is a religioussite but is quite historic too. Byzantine beauty at its best!Posted on 20/8/2008 by Frank Davies
