    Bullhead City River Regatta

The big summer event in Bullhead City,

Arizona for the past four years is the Bull-

head City River Regatta, a nine mile float

down the Colorado River. On August 13 th

and 14th dozens of teams of inner tubes and

some of the most creative and outlandish

floating vessels ever assembled will meet to

drift the river to Rotary Park. This year, the

Regatta stretches to Davis Camp, just below

the dam, where the big floats will be assem-bled and launched. Also new this year, the

large vessels will be allowed to use personal

watercraft to keep them away from docks

and rocks. Landing will be at Rotary Park

where the Ye Hafta Afta party will greet

floaters and spectators with a variety of ven-

    dors, music and more fun.

(Continued on Page 2 Column 1)

It seems like every little girl has the same

dream, to have a horse of her own. For me

it was no different. I found my dream horse

across our field at our neighbors, who hap-

pened to own an Arabian horse farm.

A STORY OF LOVE, GOALS, and

TENACIOUS ATTITUDEThe following is a story of passion, and a

will to work to reach your goals. We re-

ceived this from one of our readers. We

couldnt begin to write one better. Be sure

to read through this true life account.

He was everything I had dreamed of

and more. A beautiful little chestnutyearling with four white socks, a blaze

and pink nose, and a flaxen mane and

tail. Like something out of a fairytale.

When I laid my eyes on him I knew I

had to do whatever it took to make him

    mine.

My mom had just gone through a

divorce and had no extra money to help

me out. Even if she wanted to. I was

always raised that if you wanted some-

thing you had to work for it.

Even though I was really young the

owners of the farm decided to take achance and let me work for the cost of

the yearling. This meant cleaning stalls

after school. The school bus would

drop me off so it didn't inconvenience

my mom any. Mom was not too sure

she liked the idea though. Having her

daughter being so young, with the re-

sponsibility of having a yearling colt.

Then on top of that, not knowing any-

    thing about horses.

During the year it took me to work

for my new horse I tried to learn as

much as I could from the owners of the

farm. They had a passion for showing

on the Arabian show circuit. Another

    thing I knew nothing about.

My new horses name was Superior

Image (nickname Si). Named after his

sire Beau Image. I knew Beau had won

a U.S. National titlein ladies sidesad-

    dle.

GOALS (Continued from Page 1 column 3

Seeing the trophies, ribbons, and win pictures

always impresses young people with big imagina-

tions. I now had a new dream, to show Si at the

    Arabian shows.

First I needed a saddle! After a year of doing a

lot of ground work with Si. I was lucky enough

to join a great 4-H club that had a wonderful

leader. Wendy took me under her wing giving

me all the horse knowledge I could stand. Not tomention giving me a job working cow chutes for

the ropers for the summer. Now I was able to

    buy my saddle.

With this new found knowledge I was able to

get on my horse with her guidance. It felt so

good to be on my horse for the first time know-

ing it was just him and I learning together.

It wasn't long after that, Si and I competed at our

first county fair. After my first class, and winning

    grand champion I was hooked!

I quickly found out how expensive showing

horses can be, once I started showing at the open

breed shows. I took any babysitting job I couldfind to help pay for the cost. It didn't take me

long to realize that showing at the Arabian breed

shows would be out of my reach for a long time.

Si continued to take me through many years of

county fairs, open breed shows, trail rides, and

just being the best friend a girl could have.

My leader Wendy, continued on with her

own learning from trainers who were

just discovering the new wave of Natural Horse-

manship. She would hold clinics where these

horsemen would come and teach a group of us

how to become a true team. Guiding us and our

horse using gentleness to gain trust with yourhorses. Thanks to Wendy I was able to gain true

knowledge from many hours spent with

these respected horsemen. This helped Si and I

gain a new level of trust with each other. Because

of this style of training I am able to lay Si down

to get on him bareback, and ride bridle less. I

can't begin to explain the freedom you feel when

you put your complete trust in an animal that

has a mind of his own.

    (From previous column)

There was no way I could ever imagine

selling my horse! Even after I myself got

married to a wonderful man, adopted fou

kids, and moved from Washington state t

Montana. I made sure Si always was wi

    me and well cared for.

Si turned 26 this year. I had a wakeup

call that my dream of showing him at an

Arabian show may never come true. I kno

my years with him are numbered, so I mait my goal this year, to work for it, before

    too late.

At the end of May we did our first Clas

A Arabian breed show where we took a

1st and a Reserve Grand Champion.

As the years went by, many of my friends were

selling their horses as they were going off to col-

lege, getting married and starting families. This

was just something I couldn't understand.

    (Continued on the next column)

A 1st or 2nd placing is needed to qualif

for Arabian Regional's. I had no idea, no

did I even plan on going to Regional's. B

we now had to ride this dream out to the

    fullest.

Five days before we would leave for

Regional's I get a call that my dad was in

the hospital with a rare lung disease. I

needed to leave Montana right away to ge

to Washington as soon as possible. After

arriving and seeing my dad, I knew he wa

n't going to make it...and so did he. He

grabbed my hand squeezed it. He said hi

last wish was to see me complete this drea

with my horse, to go to Regional's, and ta

    the win for him.

This was something I no longer wanted

do. I was falling into such a deep depres-

sion. Dad asked me to bring back win

pictures to show him. Not wanting to leav

him, we drove back to Montana. We had

only one day remaining to pack and load

the horse trailer before heading to South

Dakota. During our drive back we got the

phone call that my dad had passed away.

I was so thankful to have had the chanc

to say goodbye. I knew this show now ha

more meaning than just a girl fulfilling he

childhood dream. I was now going to rid

    for my dad too.

Dutch Oven Heat Three Up-Three Down RuIt is better to place more coals or briquettes on the lid o

the Dutch oven. Many Dutch oven cooks follow a sim

three up, three down rule. Measure the diameter of yo

Dutch oven and add 3 to estimate how many briquettes

place on the lid. Take 3 away from the diameter measu

    Dutch oven.

Editors Note: Rob gave us a challenge on this one. Some inspirational pho-

tos (shown above) and some vague cooking instructions. But we couldnt

pass this up. What a creative presentation. Our mixture for the patties fol-

lows. We also cooked these on the BBQ Grill, in a Dutch Oven, and also

using the regular kitchen oven. We will explain the varying techniques. The

BBQ produced the best flavor. The Dutch Oven and Kitchen Oven produce

similar results coming in real close to the BBQ. 4 Patties but serves 8-12.

2 lbs of lean ground beef

1/2 medium sweet onion minced (or 1 teaspoon Onion Powder)

    4 Tablespoons ketchup

    2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce

    1 Tablespoon Liquid Smoke

1 teaspoon Durkee brand Gourmet Burger grill creations seasoning

    (or your favorite seasoning)

    2 Pinches of Salt

2 Pinches of ground black pepper2 lbs Bacon thin slice (need 24 slices)

    12 Hot dogs

4 thick slices of cheddar cheese

12 Hamburger buns and fixings (For serving sliced Turtle on)

Mix together all ingredients but the Bacon, Hot Dogs, Cheese & Buns. Di-

vide meat mixture into 4 equal parts, forming rather large looking meat balls.

Place one of the cheese slices on the top and mash down with open palm of

hand to partially flattened. Basket weave the bacon strips over the top (3 one

direction, and 3 the other) covering the cheese and tucking or folding the

    bacon under the bottom.

Cut the 12 hot dogs in half making 24 pieces. 4 of these cut one end several

times at an angle to form a point (the tails), 4 of them cut a slit 3/4 of an inch

deep across the round end (the heads) 16 of them cut 3 slits 3/4 inch deep

across the round end (the legs). Push the flat end of the hot dogs into the

patties between the bacon at appropriate places. The mouth slit positioned

horizontally. The legs positioned with the slits positioned vertically. These

open and spread out during cooking creating a mouth and toes.

Kitchen Oven at 400, wire rack on cookie sheet, cover patties with foil and

bake 45 minutes. Remove foil and low broil for 10 minutes.
