Interview withMark Breen

Topic: So what’s life like living on the Sunset Strip?

Mark: It’s pretty interesting. There’s always something to do within a very close radius and you don’t even have to be interested at all in the entertainment industry to find anything. Just look around and see what’s out there.

T: What are some of your favorite things to do on Sunset?

M: Man, I love to hit up the Whisky A Go-Go as much as I can. I love music myself so whenever I can hit up that place the better. Lots of big musical acts perform there sometimes as well as good acts you’ve never heard of before. It’s a trip.

T: What sort of thing do you recommend to people who are checking out the Strip for the first time?

M: Kind of a tough question. I’m a bit wild and so I like to check oout whatever I can almost at first glance. I guess one of the easiest places would be the Laugh Factory. Who doesn’t love stand up comedy? But once again I have to give love to the Whisky. Love that place.

T: Are there any things you don’t like about living close to the Strip?

M: Tourists I guess. It’s not a big deal though and tourists are always welcome. They help out the economy and all that. So yeah, they’re cool. I don’t really have any big issues with living around here at all.

T: Let’s talk a little about the entertainment around the Strip. You’ve mentioned what your favorite place is; what about your least favorite?

M: Hmm, I can’t really say I have a least favor-ite at all. I haven’t actually been to every place around here but everywhere I actually have been I’ve enjoyed. I can’t really pinpoint one place over another can call it my least favorite though. Everything’s cool. I like it all.

T: How often do you like to visit places like the Whisky A Go-Go?

M: I probably go a couple times every month. My average might be something like three times per month. One of my favorite places to hang out for sure.

T: What is your opinion of The Laugh Factory?

M: Pretty awesome place. A lot of famous guys came out of there and a lot of them still perform there. Just like the Whisky it’s a good place to see some new and old faces in the stand up comedy gang. Who knows what big name might come out of there next?

T: How often would you say you visit the Laugh Factory?

M: Not nearly as much as I hang around the Whisky. I like to check out the Factory when I’m with a group of friends usually. I’ll go to the Whiskey whether I have friends with me, a date, or if I’m a lone. The comedy club is different like that I guess.

Whiskyago go.

The Whisky a Go Go is a nightclub in West Hollywood, California, United States. It is located at 8901

Sunset Boulevard, on the Sunset Strip. The Sunset Strip Whisky was founded by Elmer Valentine, Phil

Tanzini, Shelly Davis, and attorney Theodore Flier and opened on January 16 1964. In 1972, Valentine,

Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and others started the Rainbow Bar & Grill on the Sunset Strip. In 1966, Valen-

tine, Adler and others founded The Roxy Theatre. Lou Adler bought into the Whisky in the late '70s.

Valentine sold his interest in the Whisky a Go Go in the '90s but retained an ownership in the Rainbow Bar

& Grill and the Roxy Theatre until his death in December 2008. Though the club was billed as a disco-

thèque, suggesting that it offered only recorded music, the Whisky a Go Go opened with a live band led by

Johnny Rivers and a short-skirted female DJ Rhonda Lane ,spinning records between sets from a

suspended cage at the right of the stage. When, in July 1965, the DJ danced during Rivers' set, the audience

thought it was part of the act and the concept of Go-Go dancers dancing in cages was born.

The Whisky a Go Go was one of the places which popularized the Go-Go dancing. Elmer Valentine, in a

2006 Vanity Fair article, recalled arranging to have a female DJ play records between Rivers' sets so patrons

could continue dancing. But because there wasn't enough room on the floor for a DJ booth, he had a glass-

walled booth mounted high above the floor. A contest was held for the girl DJ job. But when the young

winner called Valentine on the night of the opening to tearfully say her mother forbade her from doing it,

Valentine recruited the club's cigarette girl, Patty Brockhurst. Valentine quickly hired two more girl danc-

ers, one of whom, Joanna Labean, designed the official go-go-girl costume of fringed dress and white boots.

Rivers rode the Whisky-born "go-go" craze to national fame with records recorded partly "live at the

Whisky." The Miracles recorded the song "Going to a Go-Go" in 1966 (which was covered in 1982 by The

Rolling Stones), and Whisky a Go Go franchises sprang up all over the country.
