CASE HISTORY:
John has just graduated from College of BusinessAdministration at state university, and has joined hisfamily's small business, which employs 25 semi-skilledworkers. After observing John during the first week onthe job his father called him in and said, "John, I have
had a chance to observe your working with the men andwomen for the past two days and although I hate to saysomething but I must. You are just too nice to people. Iknow they taught you human relations stuff at theuniversity but it just does not work here. I remember
when the Hawthorne Studies were first reported andeverybody in the academic field got all excited aboutthem, but believe me, there is more to managing peoplethan just being nice to them".

Q1. How would you react to your father's
comments if you were John?
To some extent Johns father is right insaying that there is more to managing peoplethan just being nice to them but in my opinion
Hawthorne study is not only concerned withthe human relations at work place or beingnice to workers but it deals with how thehuman behavior is affected by various
variables at the workplace and how theimpact of these variables on human behavioraffect the productivity.

I think he got some misconception aboutHawthorn study, he hasnt got completely an
idea about Hawthorn study.

Q3. What phase of management do you think Johns
father has gone through in this family business? Do
think he understands the significance of recent trends
in the environment and how the new paradigm willaffect his business?
In this family business, Johns father not properly
understand the recent trends in the environment, he hasgone through an old concept of management which candeeply affected on his business. He should adopt a newconcept of management in which a business is operated,supervision and execution of management policies. In
this sense he would have to understand the recentbusiness environment that will provides him with a clearand concise introduction to all of the most importantactivities taking place inside and outside organizations.

Q4. If you were John how would you explain to your
father the new perspective that is needed and how
the study of organizational behavior will help the
business be successful in the new Paradigm?
If I was at the place of john, I would have
explained my father about how being nice toworkers can lead to increase the motivationlevel of workers. They feel important ,responsible and working in a social
environment will definitely increase theproductivity.

I would never ever question my fathers ability
to run a business but if I believe in somethingI would explain it to my father with logical
reasoning....
