TODAY’S fixtures

THERE are still four months of the sea-son to go but January could prove to be a vital month in the race for the Wessex Premier Division title.

There are a whole host of vital games in the division this afternoon, the biggest being leaders Moneyfields heading to third placed side Blackfield and Langley.

Elsewhere, fifth placed Winchester City and sixth placed Folland Sports meet at the Denplan City Ground, with both eager to cut the gap between themselves and the top two clubs if they slip up this afternoon.

Fourth placed Whitchurch United are at home to lowly Verwood Town, looking to catch back up with the top two as well.

There’s another top ten clash where seventh placed Lymington Town host ninth placed Andover Town, while tenth and 12th meet in the New Forest when Brockenhurst play Horndean.

There’s a crucial clash at the foot of the table with second from bottom Fare-ham Town hosting fourth from bottom Christchurch.

Bottom side Totton and Eling are at home to Hamworthy United.

In Division 1, leaders Tadley Calleva face Pewsey Vale, while third placed Amesbury Town are at home to United Services Portsmouth.

Outside of the Wessex League there isn’t a huge amount of action above step five level, with most of the Conference clubs playing tomorrow due to the third round of the FA Cup and having played on New Year’s Day.

GOOD afternoon to everyone attending today’s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and sup-porters from Fawley and the match officials.

So here we are in 2015 – a year which promises to be one of the most important in the club’s long and proud history.

The first half of the season has been fantastic. The football we have played has earned us admirers both close to home and far away and we have got our-selves into a position where we could earn promotion to step four of the non-league pyramid this season.

This is no time to sit back, relax and admire our fine work so far I can assure you. The next three months must be some of the hardest we have ever known before we can even think about celebrating in any way.

We are second in the division and in the quarter finals of the Wessex League Cup and semi finals of the Portsmouth Senior Cup. But no one will remember us for achieving that by the turn of the year.

The only way we will get any recognition is if we get ourselves into a promotion position and win some silverware by the end of the season.

On and off the pitch now we must pull together and work harder than we have done up until now.

There is a lot of work that needs to be done to get us over the line in all three of the competitions I mentioned above. And I include you, our supporters, among those who now need to up their game again.

If you can get along to the ground and help our work around the stadium or support an event, that would be superb. But the minimum we need from you is to keep backing your team as vocally and loyally as you have been and now take it to the next level.

MANAGER’S notes

I’D LIKE to welcome Fawley to Love Lane for today’s league encounter.

I’d also like to wish everyone at Pe-tersfield Town FC a Happy New Year and I hope you have all enjoyed the festive holiday period.

Since I last wrote some notes for the pro-gramme we have enjoyed two wins.

We came through the home game against Newport IOW with a 4-2 victory. It was pleasing to beat a side who I felt would be up there challenging for the title this season.

We played very well on a heavy pitch that day and Warren Hunt was in excellent form, scoring a hat-trick to ensure we secured all three points.

He then continued that goalscoring form in our local derby at Horndean, scoring the only goal of the game to

give us another three points. It was great to get maximum points

from those two games but we are in for another tough test this afternoon.

I have seen Fawley in action this sea-son and they are more than capable of

causing us problems this afternoon. They play with a good shape and

my players know they must be at their best again to get the result we all want – another three points.

It was good to see so many of you at Horndean last Saturday. You helped to turn an away game almost into a home game for us.

Your support in tough situa-tions like a local derby is much

appreciated by the players, and my coaching staff and

I. While we have some crucial matches

in the coming weeks, I hope as many of you as possible can get out to support us.

Your backing really does make a dif-ference.

All the best.

Sus

I’m hoping to see Rams out in force at our crucial matches in coming weeks

A NEW appointment has been made to Petersfield Town’s coaching staff for the youth team.

John Geddes has become one of manager Andy Millard’s coaching team and it is hoped his experience will bring about a change of fortunes for the Hamp-shire County Youth League side.

Geddes enjoyed a playing career in

non-league football as a goalkeeper, mainly playing in Sussex with spells for Midhurst and Chichester during his play-ing days. He joins Millard’s other coach-ing staff – Tom Best and Nawaf Ameir.

They will be hoping the new year sparks a new spell of good form for the club’s youth side after a tough start to their 2014-15 campaign.

Geddes joins youth team set-up

PETERSFIELD Town boss Ian Saunders continues to bolster his squad ahead of a tough month for the Rams.

The club have signed Jordan Neal from Wessex Premier Division neigh-bours Fareham Town this week.

Neal scored over 40 goals in the Hampshire Premier League last season for Locks Heath. He has also appeared for Liss Athletic in the same competition

this season. His goal tally for a struggling Fareham

side still reached into double figures this season, and it was his goal which knocked Petersfield out of the FA Vase at Cams Alders.

Saunders is hoping Neal’s attacking threat will add further to the options he has at his disposal in the first team squad as the Rams continue to push forwards.

RESERVE rams TODAY’S visitors

FAWLEY was formed as AGWI United in 1923 and joined the Hampshire League six seasons later.

In 1949 they changed their name to Esso Fawley.

They won Division 3 of the Hampshire League in 1994-95 and were promoted to Division 2. After a league reorganisa-tion in 1999 they were moved up to the Premier Division.

In 2002 they changed their name again to Fawley AFC.

In 2004-05 Fawley became founder members of the new Division 2 of the Wessex League, which was renamed Division One in 2006.

In 2009-10 they finished second in

Division 1 and were promoted to the Wessex Premier Division.

At the moment the club is on course to record their highest placed finish in the Wessex Premier Division, where they currently sit in 15th place.

After gaining promotion, the following season they finished 20th, in 2011-12 they were 19th, 2012-13 they were 17th and last season they finished in 20th position.

The village of Fawley is dominated by the oil refinery, which has been there since 1921.

It was rebuilt and extended in 1951 and is the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom.

Life in Fawley is dominated by UK’s biggest oil refinery

Horndean 0Petersfield Town 1

PETERSFIELD won the bragging rights over their East Hampshire neighbours Horndean with their first derby win in over four years.

The last time the Rams enjoyed victory over the Deans was on April 22, 2010, but they enjoyed the upper hand after this win and with it three points which keeps their title challenge in the Wessex Pre-mier Division well and truly on track.

No quarter was given by either side in what became a tough, combative clash between the visitors, who are eyeing promotion, and the home side, who are looking to get themselves among the clubs at the top end of the table.

The pitch didn’t let the game flow. It was a heavy surface which continued to cut up throughout, but the fact the match was able to go ahead at all is credit to the Horndean ground staff following the recent wet weather.

Petersfield created the first handful of chances when Warren Hunt found space on the edge of the penalty area but curled his shot well over the top and Danny Thompson received the ball on the right, cut inside his marker but curled his shot straight into the hands of Horndean keeper Derek Harding.

Horndean worked their first chance of the game on 15 minutes when Ashley Harris picked up a loose ball 25 yards out and fired in a shot which Rams keeper Matt Shortt had to turn around the post.

Mark Smith then burst clear for the home side, took the ball into the box and just as he shaped to shoot, Dan Wood-ward slid in with a superb tackle to block his effort.

Petersfield got their noses in front a minute before the half time interval. The ball was swept out to the right and Thompson’s cross was blocked but it was picked up some 30 yards out by Ed Dryden who floated the ball into the penalty area, where Hunt timed his run perfectly to get between two defenders and place his header past Harding and into the far corner of the net.

Horndean were always going to have to chase the game in the second half being a goal behind and although they had a number of half chances they were unable to put the Rams’ goal under any sustained pressure.

On 59 minutes they had a good chance to score when Shortt was caught out of position trying to clear the ball. The Deans tried to get the ball back into the six yard box before the Petersfield keeper could recover but Woodward was in the right position to head the ball out.

From the resulting corner Woodward again was in the right place at the right time, coming off the goal line to head the ball away at the far post.

Petersfield then created two half decent chances of their own to score. A deep cross into the box saw Hunt stretch out a leg to try and force the ball home, and then Andy Todd got the ball from Will Essai on the left and slid a pass through for Dryden to chase but Harding raced off his line to smother the ball.

Petersfield had chances to stretch their lead late on. Hunt was sent sprawl-ing by a tackle after he appeared to be clean through and a free kick from Thompson was missed by Alex Ward’s head and then Todd slid in but his effort went high and wide of the target.

Rams bag bragging rights with win in local derby clash

RETRO rams

EVERY programme this season will fea-ture a story from the files of the Peters-field Post – Petersfield Town FC’s official media partner.

Today we go back to January 5, 1978, and Petersfield United lost 3-2 at Mullard Sports in Hampshire League Division 4.

The defeat also meant the Rams missed the chance to go top of the table after crumbling against the side rooted to the bottom of the division.

United looked jaded from the start of this game but they took the lead after 13 minutes when Mick Wallis lobbed the ball over the keeper and as it was about to go in, player manager Billy Wrighting crashed the ball into the net.

However, the home side drew level within two minutes and before United had time to gather themselves they fell

behind from a free kick given away by Richard Turnbull.

John Goater hit the post and Wrighting was denied a goal which he thought had crossed the line before Petersfield drew level moments before the interval.

Wallis floated a free kick into the box and Wrighting soared above the defence to head home the equaliser.

United’s normally stable defence looked decidedly shaky during the sec-ond half when it was put under pressure by the home side’s fast breaks.

Mullard Sports got the winner on 68 minutes when Neil Codgbrook miscued his clearance to gift a chance to the home side’s inside left.

Wallis and Wrighting both went close but neither of them could force Peters-field back into the game.

Petersfield Town 4Newport IOW 2

PETERSFIELD Town brought the curtain down on football in 2014 at Love Lane in perfect style, by seeing off another of their Wessex Premier Division title rivals.

The visitors took the lead with the first real chance of the game on 14 minutes. A long cross into the box from the left was headed on by Jake Younie and Jordan Browne waited for the ball to drop before unleashing a shot which seemed to go between Matt Shortt’s arms and in.

However, the Rams slowly recovered from this early set back and worked their way back into the game. On 22 minutes good build up play in midfield saw Ed Dryden play a quick one-two before un-leashing a shot from 25 yards out which was deflected just wide of the post.

Petersfield drew level on 26 minutes when a cross into the box was clearly handled by a Newport defender and Warren Hunt made no mistake with his penalty, sending Cameron Farley the wrong way.

Newport should have retaken the lead when Scott Jones was put clean through and any shot on target would likely have brought about a goal but he screwed his effort horribly wide of the near post.

Andy Todd then had two chances to put the Rams in front. The first saw him meet Will Essai’s cross with a downward header which went straight at Farley and the second saw him get in between two defenders but his looping header came back off the crossbar.

The Rams hit the woodwork again five minutes after half time when a free kick from the right found Alex Ward and his flicked header hit the crossbar.

Petersfield took the lead on 54 min-utes in some style. The perfect through ball from midfield found Hunt unmarked on the edge of the area and he turned and shot low into the corner of the net.

On 65 minutes Essai almost scored a goal of the season contender when he met a cross from the left with a tumbling bicycle kick volley, in the style of Peter Crouch. The shot initially squirmed under Farley’s body but he gathered the ball at the second attempt.

It was 3-1 to Petersfield four minutes later when Hunt received the ball on the left hand side of the penalty area. He took the ball to the byline and tried to pull it back but his cross hit Farley, went under his desperate dive and rolled in.

Hunt’s hat-trick meant he reached the 20 goals for the season mark from 26 matches started.

Newport then rallied and Shortt had to be alert to beat away a snap shot from Jones and Browne scooped another effort over when well placed inside the penalty area.

The visitors threatened a grandstand finish to the match when they made it 3-2 with eight minutes to go. A cross from the left found Ian Seabrook and he swept his shot home from close range.

Although Newport had plenty of pos-session in the final third of the field they were unable to fashion any chances of note to force an equaliser.

In the second minute of injury time Petersfield made sure they would get all three points when Todd’s flick across the face of goal was cleared to the edge of the penalty area and substitute Alex Low-ley ran on to the loose ball and lashed it into the roof of the net.
