Many staff and students attended school today in a variety of sports related clothing, all in aid of the Sports Relief fundraising campaign.

More information regarding the amount of money raised and number of miles run, swam, walked or cycled over the course of the week will be included in next week’s issue.

Budding chefsAs part of their GCSE catering course students have to complete a controlled practical assessment. The theme for this assessment was ‘international cuisine’. Students conducted research on a country of their choice then moved on to plan and prepare a two course meal. The students produced a selection of highly skilled dishes demonstrating a range of techniques. Dishes included; starters of tear and share bread, scallops wrapped in pancetta, main meals of chicken and mushroom pie with a lattice puff pastry top, squash ravioli, prawn linguini. Desserts included vanilla panna cotta with raspberry coulis, gelato, whisked sponge strawberry cream cake to name just a few.

The Food Technology team were very impressed with the quality of what was produced. A big thank you to Miss Booler for the co-ordination and ongoing encouragement she has offered the catering students and a huge well done to all the students for producing such fantastic results.

‘Maths Feast’ competitionOn Tuesday Dennis Acreman, Olivia French, Rachel Mulroy and Luke Peart took part in the Maths Feast Competition at The University of Manchester.

The competition is run by the Further Mathematics Support Programme and is managed by MEI. The competition is designed for Year 10 students and includes 30 secondary schools.

The day was filled with challenging maths activities, all of which our students worked through with enthusiasm, unity and strong resilience. In addition to having fun, the team were victorious and brought home three awards!

They were joint first winners, highest score for the pentominoes round and, proudly, best group for teamwork spirit. Well done to Dennis, Olivia, Rachel and Luke!

Junior schools quiz challengeThe junior quiz team performed well at the regional final of the Junior Schools Challenge, a University Challenge-style quiz competition for students in Years 7 and 8.

Pitted against fifteen other schools, the team of Noa Bradshaw-Swann, Cerys Jones, Fergus Keeling and Lilia Dandache were runners-up in their group, finishing ahead of Bolton Girls School and Calday Grammar School.

In the plate semi- final they were narrowly beaten by the host team from Bury Boys Grammar School. It was a very entertaining and competitive afternoon, well done!

Alumni talk 16th MarchIt has been a week for looking forward but also back for apprentice Process Operator Alex Ogden.

Having been named Process Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year by Trafford College, Alex took the award back to his old school, Wilmslow High, the very next day, to extol the values of in-work training to students.

United Reformed Church ConcertWell done to the many students who performed in a lunchtime concert at the Church on Thursday. Students performied a mixture of solos, duets, ukulele and cello pieces.

The only moment of disappointment was when the Church’s musical director introduced our head of music, Mr G Morley, as Mr Gary Barlow…..unfortunately the lead singer of Take That was not in the building!

Big book sale in the LRC – Tuesday 22nd March The National Literacy Trust are running a book sale to raise money to help disadvantaged children across the UK with literacy skills. Please have a good look at home for any unwanted books that are as good as new. These will be sold for between £1,00 and £2.00 (as recommended by the Trust.) You can even bring a book in to swop and it will cost you £1.00

Literacy Week Activities

Poetry by Heart During the autumn term of 2015, Year 10 students took part in Poetry By Heart workshops in order to explore the value of enjoying and understanding poetry by reading it aloud. Memorisation techniques were also taught, something a number of students proved highly adept at!

From these workshops, Jordan Spedding, Alex Poole, Natasha Hibbert and Rob Davis stepped up to take part in the school contest round of the Poetry By Heart competition. Their challenge was no small one: to learn two poems by heart and then recite them in front of an audience assembled at our Christmas Coffee and Carols event.

The panel of judges was impressed with all four entrants but selected Natasha as their winner. On 10th February this year, Natasha presented her polished and perfected recital at the Winsford Academy in front of a panel of professional poets. Congratulations to Natasha on reciting poetry at this county contest with incredible confidence and poise!

KS3 Creative Writing CompetitionOver 200 students entered this year’s Creative Writing competition. Their locally set stories with a supernatural twist showcased both talent and flair. Shortlisted entrants were treated to workshops with visiting authors Bryony Pearce and Sally Green.

The finalists, sharing their work at the Wilmslow Library celebration evening, had the audience captivated with their word wizardry!

First prize went to Bonnie Kalayal-Peacock (right) and runners up positions to Annabel Rowland and George Ainsworth but the judging panel commented that they wished they’d had more prizes to reward the amazing array of talent on show amongst the fifteen finalists.

Author Visits A real highlight of Literacy Week 2016 were visits from authors Bryony Pearce and Sally Green. ‘Phoenix Rising’ author Bryony, kicked the week off in style, speaking to a packed assembly hall full of Year 7 students in full pirate regalia.

She explained the environmental message behind the adventures of Toby and the rest of the Phoenix crew as well as her writing process. This was followed by a series of author workshops in which Year 7s were given plenty of writing advice and tips from the expert.

On Thursday, local author Sally Green dropped in to work with students from Year 8 and 9. With the release of the final book in the ‘Half Bad’ trilogy coming soon and a possible film adaptation of the novel, she certainly had lots of exciting news too.

With an eye on our Creative Writing competition, her workshops focused on the creation of successful story openings and she had even penned her own entry, set in Wilmslow High School and featuring Dr Pullé!

Wilmslow SwimathonInterested in entering a team of 6 or less to swim for charity? Since 1988, well over two thousand swimmers representing a cross section of local life have raised over £145,000 for many local and national charities, swimming in the Rotary Swimathon. Each team consists of six swimmers who swim on a relay basis. Your team will be allocated a lane in the pool and how you organise the team’s swim is left up to you. Some teams have their strongest swimmers swim several consecutive lengths to give their team mates a longer rest. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Year 11 study leaveAs you may be aware, Year 11 students are no longer granted formal study leave in line with new statutory guidance. However, a significant number of GCSE examinations will be taking

place before the half term break. For further details, and the full GCSE examination timetable, please see the school website www.wilmslowhigh.com

Students will therefore be expected to attend school until Thursday 26th May and will continue with normal timetabled lessons until this date. We are unable to grant permission for study leave before this time. After half term (week commencing 6th June) students can revise at

home and are only required to attend school to sit examinations or organised revision sessions.

Easter revision schoolWe are currently planning an Easter holiday revision school which will run for several days in the second week of the Easter holiday. The purpose of this is to give students a supervised environment in which to revise with the opportunity to get a little help where they are confused or stuck. It is not intended to be additional teaching.

If this is something that you think your child would benefit from, and would attend, I’d be grateful if you would let us know. This would be free of charge to students supported by the Pupil Premium (we will have told you recently if your child is supported in this way), but there may be a small charge for other students to help cover staffing costs. Additional science mock examinationParents and carers of Year 11 additional science students should have received a letter informing them of an additional science mock examination that will take place on the 24th March 2016.

Year 11 separate science students and Year 11 core science students are not involved in this as they were examined during the Christmas mock period. The examination will consist of 3 subject specific papers totalling 2 hours. Some students may have a mixed tier of entry (higher or foundation)

for different science subjects, based on their performance in that science subject during the year.

We are using the marks from this mock examination as an indicator for the GCSE tier entry in the summer examinations and

consequently as an approach to ensure that they achieved their best possible grade.

If your son or daughter is unsure as to whether they have been entered for foundation or higher tier and in which subject, they need to speak with their science teacher well before the 24th March.

Year 10 Work Experience 4th July – 8th JulyA significant number of our Year 10 students now have a placement for the work experience week. As it takes time for the company to complete all the health and safety checks in time, you are asked to send in any self-placement forms before the end of this term. There are still placements available and we will try to help students who have a specific request. The school has requested a £10 contribution towards the cost of work experience and, although many contributions have been received, there are still some outstanding.

Scarlet Fever cases in Wilmslow – advice for parents/carers We have been informed that a small number of children, who attend respectively Wilmslow Grange and Lindow Primary Schools, have been diagnosed with suspected / confirmed scarlet fever. We have two confirmed cases at Wilmslow High School which are not related to each other (but where each has a sibling at one of the primary schools). Although scarlet fever is usually a mild illness, it should be treated with antibiotics to minimise the risk of complications and reduce the spread to others. The symptoms of scarlet fever include a sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. This is followed by a fine red rash which typically first appears on the chest and stomach, rapidly spreading to other parts of the body. On more darkly-pigmented skin, the scarlet rash may be harder to spot, but it should feel like ‘sandpaper’. The face can be flushed red but pale around the mouth. If you think you, or your child, has scarlet fever:

• See your GP or contact NHS 111 as soon as possible• Make sure that you/your child takes the full course of any antibiotics prescribed by the doctor.• Stay at home, away from nursery, school or work for at least 24 hours after starting the antibiotic treatment, to avoid spreading the infection If your child has an underlying condition which affects their immune system, you should contact your GP or hospital doctor to discuss whether any additional measures are needed.

The 1st XV rugby team (above) won their Cheshire title back in December, while the girls’ hockey team (below) won their county tournament just last week.

Playing with a depleted team due to injury and unavailability, it was a true test of hard work and resilience. In their opening fixture, the girls beat Kings Chester 1-0 and followed with a comprehensive 3 – 0 victory over The Grange. In their final game of the day, a fine team performance saw them run out 2 – 1 winners over The King’s School Macclesfield 2-1 and take the county title.

Following in the footsteps of the rugby and hockey teams, the 1st XI football team (below) cruised into their Cheshire Cup final with a comprehensive 7-0 win over Birchwood last week. Due to a backlog of fixtures, the final will now be played after the Easter break.

The team have enjoyed an incredibly successful season so far, winning 22, drawing 2 and losing only 1 match. The team have

played attractive football throughout the year, scoring 97 goals in all competitions and are currently unbeaten in the ESFA North West league. Despite their one loss of the season coming in the ESFA cup, the team are still fighting for a triple – the Cheshire Cup, Macclesfield and District Cup and the ESFA North West League title. Still all to play for – hopefully their hard work will be rewarded with some silverware in the coming weeks. The PE Department would like to once again extend our thanks to team sponsors, James

Sporting success for Wilmslow HighIt’s been a successful year for Wilmslow’s senior sports teams, with the 1st XV rugby and senior girls hockey team already crowned Cheshire Champions and the 1st XI football team looking to make it a hat trick of trophies in their Cheshire Cup final after the Easter break.

NetballThe senior netball team (right) finished the season strongly with a convincing 20-3 win over All Hallows on Tuesday. There were also comprehensive wins for both the U12 A and B teams, 19-1 and 15-6.

HockeyThe U14 (left) and U16 girls hockey teams played in their county finals in Upton on Chester on Saturday, with both teams finishing in third place. Following their outstanding

performance in the previous round, our U13s took part in the North National Finals on Tuesday. The team beat Wakefield 1-0, drew with Cundall Manor 1-1, lost 2-1 to RGS Newcastle and 4-1 to the Grange, to finish in 4th place overall.

FootballIt’s been a busy week for our football teams. On Saturday our 2nd XI (above), U14s and U13s both won away at Stockport Grammar School. Our U12A and B teams were well beaten at home against the same opposition.

However, there were better performances to come from the U12s, who beat Eaton Bank 8-1 in the Macclesfield and District quarter final on Monday and made it to the semi final of the Manchester Grammar 9 a-side tournament on Wednesday, beating Bury Grammar 2-0, St Margaret’s 1-0, The Grange 2-0, and Sandbach 5-3 on penalties before narrowly losing out 1-0 to Audenshaw in the semi final.

All of our junior teams made it safely through their Macclesfield and District cup ties this week, with the U13s winning 9-0 over Eaton Bank, the U14s beating Poynton 2-1 and our U16s beating Knutsford 6-3. The 1st XI continued their unbeaten run in the ESFA North West league this week, beating Haslingdon 7-0 on Monday and Wellacre Academy 6-0 on Wednesday.

RugbyOur U15 rugby team brought home some silverware this week, winning the Cheshire 7s competition held at Lymm High School on Wednesday. Wilmslow beat the heavily fancied Kings Macclesfield in their opening game and went on to top the group with further wins over Weaverham and St Anselms. Two more impressive performances saw them beat hosts Lymm in the semi final and a strong Wirral Grammar side in the final.

Cheshire Rugby 7s WinnersYear 10 rugby players won the Cheshire Rugby 7s at Lymm High School this week. After emerging from the group unbeaten after victories against King’s School, Weaverham and St. Anselms, the boys went on to beat Lymm in the semi-final, in front of a small crowd of home fans, then Wirral in the final.

The boys were outstanding throughout with all 12 squad players contributing to the cup win.
