MISSOURI SHEEP PRODUCERS OFFER COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Supporting the future of the Missouri sheep industry is a key strategy

for the Missouri Sheep Producers (MSP) organization. Offering four

$750 scholarships to current and former 4-H and FFA members involved

in the sheep industry is one way the organization accomplishes this strat-

egy.

“Youth involvement is important to the sheep industry,” says Ed DeOrnel-

lis, president of MSP. “The Missouri Sheep Producers feel that by sup-

porting the youth now they are more likely to continue in the sheep indus-

try as they become adults.”

“Applicants are selected based on their sheep industry involvement, character, academic achievements, educa-

tional goals and financial need,” said Sarah Gehring, scholarship committee chair. College students and high

school seniors who are Missouri residents or out-of-state students attending a Missouri school are eligible for

these scholarships. Recipients must be former or current 4-H or FFA members actively involved in a sheep

project for at least three years.

Applications can be downloaded from the MSP Web site at www.missourisheep.com/youthprograms.htm. The

application deadline is May 16, 2011. Scholarships will be presented at the Missouri State Fair.

For more information about the Missouri Sheep Producers Scholarship,

please contact Sarah Gehring at 573-886-9417 or via e-mail at

STATE 4-H PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST

The 2011 State 4-H Public Speaking Contest will take place Saturday, September 24th on the MU Campus, with a

few changes from 2010: Beginning this year, youth may compete as members of the junior division (ages 8-10),

intermediate division (ages 11-13) or senior division (ages 14-18); Time limits for prepared, extemporaneous or

technology assisted speeches will vary by division: juniors (3-5 minutes), intermediates (4-6 minutes) and seniors

(5-7 minutes); Finally, the “no props” rule is being expanded to all competition categories.

As with last year’s event, counties may send up to three speakers per division (junior, senior and intermediate) for

the Prepared, Extemporaneous and Technology Assisted categories, and up to five competitors per division for

Public Service Announcements, Dramatic Interpretations, Humorous In-

terpretations and Pantomimes. All other rules and guidelines will remain

consistent. Information will be posted at http://4h.missouri.edu/go/

events/publicspeaking/.

All intermediates who would like to strengthen their public speaking

skills are encouraged to check out the 4-H Public Speaking Academy be-

ing held in Pike County on June 7-8, 2011! See below! Whether the goal

is to prepare for the state contest or just strengthen this critical part

of their leadership and communication arsenal, the public speaking acad-

emy looks to be a valuable opportunity and a lot of fun.

4-H PUBLIC SPEAKING ACADEMY

The 4-H Public Speaking Academy is an exciting new MU Extension

event! Extension staff, along with former 4-H volunteers and college

professors will provide educational workshops to help youth build their

skills and comfort with public speaking. Participants will be guided

through the basics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech. Youth will receive individual assis-

tance. The camp is open to all youth ages 11-13 years of age interested in learning more about public speaking.

The Academy will be held June 7-8, 2011 and registration is due on May 1; however, the academy will be filled on a

first come first serve basis with a maximum of 30. Lodging will be provided on the campus of Central Methodist

University with activities that include swimming.

For more information, contact Patty Fisher at [email protected] or 573-324-5464 or Kathy Bondy at

[email protected] or 660-584-3658.

SHOW-ME 4-H WARES AT THE

MISSOURI STATE FAIR 2011

Applications now open for 4-H youth exhibitors!

The 5TH Annual Show Me 4-H Wares at the State Fair booth

is now accepting applications from 4-H youth entrepreneurs

ages 8-18 to sell their original 4-H products and services at

the Missouri State Fair on August 11, 12, 13 or 14, 2011.

Please note these guidelines for the program:

Any 4-H member in good standing is eligible to apply as an

exhibitor at the booth, regardless of whether he/she has a

2011 State Fair eligible project.

Teams of up to 3 youth representing a 4-H club may apply

to sell original products or services as a group (club-based

ventures feature original items that are produced and sold by

4-H members, such as goat milk soap or doggie treats).

Youth should be able to make clear connections between

items they are selling and skills they have learned through 4-H

projects, including skills in science and entrepreneurship.

Youth who have completed or are enrolled in the 4-H en-

trepreneurship project, or have participated in a county fair

booth are strongly encouraged to apply (neither of these are

required for exhibiting at the State Fair).

Youth will select a preferred day and time slot (4-hr. or 8-

hr.) to sell their wares on their application.

Exhibitors will have the option of displaying items and order information at the booth beyond their time slot.

Youth marketing a service (such as photography or babysitting) can do so with an in-person demonstration, pre-

made video, or PowerPoint presentation at the booth. Youth selling a product can bring pre-made items to sell at

the booth, and/or take customer orders to fill after the fair.

Applications require a thorough description of the product or service, a sample or photo of the item, a recommen-

dation from an unrelated adult, and approval by the county 4-H youth staff. Up to 16 youth exhibitors (or groups)

will be selected to sell during the 4 days. (Two exhibitors for each time slot will have access to two 10x10 booth

spaces). Youth exhibitors will initially be selected from applications received by May 20, with youth notified

by June 1. Youth may still apply after May 20, until all booth vacancies are filled up.

Youth selected as Show Me 4-H Wares exhibitors will be mailed additional information on how to price items,

make a sales pitch, etc. Youth will also participate in a conference call in early August with other Show Me 4-H

Wares exhibitors. Project leaders and parents are encouraged to assist youth in preparing for “blue ribbon” mar-

keting of themselves and their items at the state fair.

To access the application (PDF or DOC), visit: http://4h.missouri.edu/events/fair/showmewares.htm

For more information about the program, please contact Steve Henness at the 4-H Center for Youth Development

at [email protected] or 573/884-6618.

Youth Building Renovation

In Progress

The Clinton County Youth Building is

currently in the middle of getting an

interior facelift. The new closet and

chair and table storage unit is built in

and sheet rocked. The new ceiling is

in place and is ready for painting. As

soon as that is completed a major

cleanup will be necessary. We will

keep you informed about when we will

be needing help to complete that

process.

The Youth Building Lawn Needs Your Help!

After the winter of interminable snows, the lawn areas around the Youth

Building need a lot of work. As you can see from these photos, the snow

removal process was very hard on the sod. We have major divots to

repair as well as large piles of sod to either spread out and replace in

those divots or remove them entirely. If you can organize a crew to aid

us in this beautification project we would greatly appreciate it. With

the extent of the damage, it may take several crews, several days to get

the yard back to its prior condition. What a great community service

project!!!

April Greetings!

The Code of the West…Principle #2 is an easy one for 4-H members and families! “Take Pride in Your Work”

How can we NOT take pride in our 4-H world? Everywhere I turn, I am bustin' my buttons with green pride! Your

club reporters fill local newspapers with your 4-H accomplishments, community service projects, and special

events. At competitions, we celebrate the accomplishments of the 4-H member in addition to the blue ribbon

projects. We celebrate the State Fair grand champion but also the Clover Kid who completed their project or

gave their mini-demonstration. We hear the wonderful compliments from our 4-H judges who love hearing the

pride in the conversations they hold with 4-H members describing their project work. It's an attitude that shows

up everywhere in 4-H! Judges who evaluate year-end recognition forms thank us for giving them the opportunity

to read about member's accomplishments. I swell with pride when we have the top senior and junior horse judging

teams win at our state competition, and am also proud of that young 4-H camper who survived the homesickness

battle! We take pride in HOW we get to the end of our project work because we are growing character as we

grow 4-H kids.

Clovers...wear them with pride!

Deb
