The Rector Writes...

Dear friends

I am tempted to say ‘Happy New Year!’ Advent begins at the end of

November and, of course, it marks the beginning of the Church’s year. Advent

(meaning literally ‘coming’) is characterised by a special kind of waiting.

Traditionally, this waiting has two perspectives: firstly, we look back and remember

Israel’s wait for a Messiah and the very intimate events of Mary and Joseph’s wait

for Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem; and, secondly, we look forward to Jesus’ return as the

judge of all people at the end of history. One of the earliest Christian prayers

recorded in the New Testament was the Aramaic phrase ‘maranatha’ which means

something like ‘Come, O Lord’ (1 Cor. 16: 22). (Interestingly, it may also mean ‘the

Lord has come’ in which case it captures perfectly the double perspective of

Advent). Recorded in Greek, it is also the final words of Revelation: ‘Amen, come

Lord Jesus’ (Rev. 22: 20). Is this a prayer close to our hearts today?

An Advent Invitation

The stresses and strains of life can easily rob us of the time and space we

need to meet with God—this is especially so in the weeks running up to Christmas.

The deep longing for God that we read about so much in the Scriptures can seem a

distant cry from our own experience. This is not only rather sad but it is also a

missed opportunity to connect with the very source of life.

May I therefore extend an Advent invitation? If the New Year of the regular

calendar provides us with a wonderful opportunity to turn over a new leaf why not

be ahead of the game and make Advent a time to prepare for a renewed encounter

with God through a patient and intentional wait for Christmas. At the same time

we can participate in the more urgent wait for Christ’s return when all things shall

indeed be made new: ‘Come, O Lord!’

I look forward to journeying

with you this month as we look

forward to the season of Advent.

If the date you have been scheduled for is not possible please feel free to swap with

someone else on the rota. Please deal directly with the person concerned and remember

to make contact with them in good time!

If you are reading from an Epistle please conclude the reading with the words: This is the

Word of the Lord.

If you are reading from the Gospel only use the wording for a Communion service if it is in

fact a communion service. Otherwise please conclude the reading with the words: This is

the word of the Lord. The congregation need only stand for a Gospel reading if it is

Communion.

Finally, whether you are reading or leading prayers please remember to speak slowly, clearly and loudly! Even with a mic’ the volume is not sufficient for all members of the congregation.

Many thanks for your participation in our worship.

PEATA ~ Marianne McGiffin and Gosia Sitko-Hogan~

Peata was founded in September 1996 to further the understanding of the

relationship between people and pets and the benefits of this relationship,

particularly in a healthcare setting. It was the brainchild of vet John

Bainbridge, who recognised the immense benefit which people derive from

contact with animals, particularly people in nursing homes, long-stay

hospitals and other care-units, many of whom had once been pet-owners

themselves but now have no opportunity of

contact with an animal. Also, pet owners can

deepen the bond with their pets by sharing them with others,

and so the idea of the Pet Visiting Scheme was initiated.

The therapeutic benefit which is derived from contact

between humans and animals is now well recognised, but in

1996 Pet Facilitated Therapy (PFT) was a new concept in Irish

healthcare, and due to John’s foresight, professionalism and leadership, Peata was the first

organisation to bring this great benefit to people in long-term care in Ireland. Over the years,

other services offered by Peata include advice on pet bereavement and onward referral to

an especially trained counsellor, if required.

Peata is a voluntary organisation, unsupported by government funding or sponsorship. It

relies entirely on membership fees, fundraising collections and proceeds from its annual Pet

Blessing and Carol Service events. We would be happy if St Matthias’ could support us in our

challenging work. We list below the main ways you can lend us your hand:

5 Main Tips to Help Peata

1 Support Peata through annual membership of 20 Euro. You can be a Peata member even if you don’t have a dog. Secondly, you can also be a volunteer member that together with your pet commits to visiting caring

A Word From The Curate

Niall Strat ford

Have you ever stopped to think

about a raindrop? On the basis that living in

Ireland one is assured of not having to wait

too long before seeing or feeling rain, I am

surprised that more of us don’t stop to

contemplate all the many aspects of a

raindrop!

On doing a little research, I discovered, that to understand a raindrop

one needs to have rain and yes, in order to have rain, you must have a cloud.

Without wishing to become too technical, I discovered that a cloud

comprises of water vapour and tiny particles called condensation nuclei. The

water vapour wraps itself around these tiny particles and forms a droplet.

The ‘droplets’ are too small to fall out of the sky by themselves and so they

go their own playground where they meet other droplets! On joining with

bigger ‘droplets’ they start to grow in size until they become so big that they

start to ‘fall out of the sky’. This growing ‘droplet’ is called—believe it or

not—a raindrop!

Observing the world around us in a new light and with a conscious

understanding is a way of seeing God at work in unusual ways. Perhaps we

as human beings are like tiny nuclei seeking and searching. Trying to find

different people and beliefs to cling onto—someone / something in our lives

with whom and to which we can become attached. Have we ever considered

that Christianity is like a ‘droplet convention’ where we all ‘grow’ by meeting

together, through listening and sharing with each other? As the ‘droplets’

grow, they bring in more and more ‘droplets’ until they become raindrops—a

Christian community growing and developing. A multitude of raindrops can

form a stream and become a river and, as we have witnessed very recently, a

raging torrent. Could this be what is meant by a Watershed!

October was a great month in Sunday Club, first we had our Harvest Service and what an enjoyable occasion that

was. The children and their parents were SO GENEROUS with their donations to Somalia, what a good feeling they

all got from giving to someone who needed it. Other weeks we played bingo and did crafts and also

taught the children a Pumpkin Prayer and carved a special pumpkin together.

On November 13th the Gospel reading will be Matthew 25 14-30 “The Parable

of the Talents” and the children will be hearing this story and having a little “Talent” show of their own. We will also be getting ready for our Christingle service on December 4th and starting to prepare for the Nativity on December 11th. The third Sunday of every month (the Sunday before the All-Age Service) Anne Thielemans will come to Sunday Club and teach the children a song to sing at the All-Age so we have a lot to look forward to and learn and it is important that the children come as often as they can so that they can be included in all the special services.

~ Maria Waters ~ St Matthias Sunday Club News

Pumpkin Prayer

As I carve my pumpkin, help me say this prayer:

Open my mind so I can learn about You; (Cut the top of the pumpkin)

Take away all my sin and forgive me for

the wrong things I do; (Clean out the inside)

Open my eyes so Your Love I will see; (Cut eyes shaped like hearts)

I'm sorry for turning up my nose to all

you've given me; (Cut a nose in the shape of the cross)

Open my ears so Your Word I will hear; (Cut ears shaped like the Bible)

Open my mouth so I can tell others

you're near; (Cut mouth in the shape of a fish)

Let Your Light shine in all I say and do! Amen.

(Place a candle and light)

What’s Your Talent?

Can you sing? Dance?

Do Cartwheels?

Are you a Great Goal Scorer? Or

the champ at Keepie-Uppy?

Are you good at reading or Art?

Come to Sunday Club on November

13th and show off your talent! Maria Waters (087) 785 1735

CHILDRENS HARVEST

Thank you to all our young people who took part in

our Harvest Thanksgiving Service on 9th October. The readers during the presentation of the symbols of The Harvest were: Kayleigh, Robert, Patrick, Tommie, Jordan, Daniel, Amy and Matthew—who all read so well.

A special ‘collection box’ had been made and decorated by our

young people (with a little help). It was wonderful. Thank you so much. The young people’s collection at the Harvest was in aid of Somalia. We are most grateful for the wonderful effort and contribution made. A fantastic sum of money was collected—€325.00. This

will be put to very good use to alleviate the needs of those suffering from famine in Somalia. Thank you so much to all involved in any way in this celebration and Thank You all so much for the large sum of money collected. Some of our younger members most generously donated some or even all of their pocket money! Finally thank you to our Sunday Club leaders for their assistance.

The Alpha Away Day took

place on 22nd October at

Whitechurch National School in

Rathfarnham. It was attended by

about 30 participants, several of

whom got organised to go in car

pools—many thanks to all the drivers.

The venue

was lovely, intimately tucked away in a backdrop of

mature woody landscape and yet only minutes away

from the M50. The participants were well-watered and

fed with teas and coffees, yummy desserts and

savouries on offer all throughout the day, thanks to the

hard-working catering team of Beverly and Sandra. As

only 3 more sessions of the Alpha course remain after the Away Day, some participants

have already expressed certain sadness of it ending. The participants have really been

coming and growing together—experiencing new friendships and kinships and enjoying the

time and atmosphere to discover,

learn, share, strengthen and develop

one’s Christian faith in a relaxed, free

and inviting way.

The Away Day was devoted to the

matter of the Holy Spirit—who is the Holy Spirit, what does the Holy Spirit do and how can

one be filled with the

Holy Spirit—with Nicky

Gumbel on DVD

presenting each topic

and group discussions

following after. The Day

ended openly with an opportunity to take a quiet time for individual reflections or have a

one-on-one prayer moment with a group leader.

Notes.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that many people had other commitments or were on holidays, our outing to the Casino in Marino had to be cancelled. Never mind, as there appears to be great interest in it we will re-schedule it for next Spring.

On 26th October a group set off from the church to visit Leighlinbridge for a very nice lunch and a spot of

retail therapy! A great time was had by all and many thanks to the drivers involved.

On 28th November we plan to visit the Pavilion Theatre for St Patrick's Dramatic Society's production of Same Old Moon. This is St Patrick's 50th Anniversary, which is a wonderful achievement and we send them our congratulations. Based in Dalkey, various members of this parish have taken part from time to time. Preceding this there is an Early Bird meal in Alexis Restaurant on Patrick Street in Dun Laoghaire. I trust by now you have all made your bookings if you wish to come to either or both of these

venues - if you haven't do CONTACT JEAN IMMEDIATELY (087 668 4472)!

Last but not least, don't forget our Christmas Lunch in the Glenview Hotel on 7th December. Put the date in your diary NOW - this is always a very enjoyable affair - and even if you have not been before you will be very

welcome. CONTACT TERRY (01 285 8461) for details. Jean Paul

Tanya Olhausen enjoyed a belated

celebration of her birthday on 21st

October kindly organised and hosted by

Maria Waters. It was a lovely

gathering of women parishioners of

St Matthias’, some of whom only

got to know of each other for the first time. Everyone brought something for the

table and bar. It was a fun evening.

Where do you live?

I live in Bayview, Killiney since I was born.

How long have you been coming to St Matthias?

Since I was christened in 1996.

Where do you sit in Church?

It changes. I used to sit in front when I was with the junior

choir but now I normally sit at the back with my Mum and

sometimes with my sister.

What do you most like about St Matthias’?

I like the way we sing in church together.

If you were the Rector, what is the one thing you would like to change?

I would like to have a Gospel choir for teenagers to get the

teenagers involved.

Do you ever feel close to God? When do you feel close to God? What

do you do to feel close to God?

If I am ever in trouble or feel I like to ask for something I

pray to Him and that is usually in situations where I would

like for something to happen. For example, I wanted a part

in a musical and I prayed for that part but I didn’t get it

so I prayed again that I get other smaller parts in the same

musical somehow.

About the Interviewee

S a r a h D o u g l a s likes singing and the performing arts. She was in St Matthias’ junior choir when it started in 2002 and left it when she turned eleven. She is the eldest daughter of Gordon Douglas and Anne Thielemans.

Page 13: Tidings Nov 2011

13

What is your favourite Gospel story and why?

I like the one about the Good Samaritan where a man was

attacked and left for dead and the Good Samaritan came

along to help after so many people who have passed the

injured man ignored him and did nothing.

Name one great blessing you got this year so far.

I got such a good part in one musical which I didn’t expect.

Do you pray? Do you have a favourite time to pray and when?

I pray sometimes when I am in need of someone to talk to.

~ Gordon Douglas ~

continued on next page…...

On the eve of the November Tidings deadline, I tried

desperately, to scramble together an ‘mini article’

to explain the increasing popularity of this

fascinating dimension to church music!

However, I am more of a hands-on man than an academic; and

as music can often be more powerful medium than words, I leave

the reader with the following brief considerations as to why world

music is so alluring to both me, and many others alike:

it unites people from different places

it is educational and promotes respect for different cultures and languages

it takes you out of your comfort zone and can be a welcome break from the

familiar

it can vary from ‘earthy simplicity’ to ‘intoxicating complexity’

it can be a creative, colourful and imaginative adventure into the world of

sound

it can be intensely rhythmic; and even so-called ‘non-singers’ can join in on

body percussion etc

it can bring you in touch with the emotions of people in far away places

it is essentially a multidisciplinary activity, with powerful links to

environmental and third world issues

it is accessible in an economic way through the possible use of rudimentary

home made instruments

as with all music making, there is that intangible ever present spiritual

dimension of enjoyment!

I hope that the points above might provide some insight into my

particular interest in this genre of music making.

My own interest in this field began years ago as a music teacher in

search of new avenues of musical appreciation in our schools. In

1998, I founded ‘The Plumber’s Guide to World Music’, a hands-on

Burglars just broke in

An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of

religious service when she was startled by an intruder. As she caught the

man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables, she yelled, "Stop! Acts

2:38!". [Turn from your sin].

The burglar stopped dead in his tracks. Then the woman calmly called the

police and explained what she had done.

As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, "Why

did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture at you."

"Scripture?" replied the burglar, "She said she had an axe and two 38s!".

Advent is the New Year of the Western Christian Church?

It is the time when western church Christians remember and celebrate

“light in the midst of darkness”—(firstly) the arrival of the Lord into the world

through the birth of his son Jesus Christ over 2000 years ago and (latterly) a

time to look forward to his Second Coming. Advent Sunday or “Levavi”

starts the period on the Sunday nearest to 30th November (St Andrew‟s

Day) and is followed by three more Sundays before 25th December.

Advent is from the Latin word „adventus‟ meaning „arrival‟ or „coming‟.

When did Advent come about?

In the 5th century. Then it began on 11th November (St Martin‟s Day) and

took the form of a six week fast leading to Christmas. During the 6th

century, Advent was reduced to its current length and later the fasting

was dropped.

The beginning of Advent is, traditionally, when the preparations for

Christmas really begin—the festive menu is planned, gifts are chosen and

wrapped, carols sung, cards are written and posted, and houses

decorated.

The Advent Wreath is the widely recognised symbol of Advent. It is usually

made of evergreen branches (meant to symbolise hope for newness and

renewal of eternal life) laid flat and arranged in a circle (meant to

symbolise God‟s eternal and endless mercy). Four candles (traditionally

red) are stood on the circle (to each represent one of the four Sundays of

Advent). A fifth candle (traditionally white) is placed in the centre—the

Christ Candle—to be lit on Christmas Day.

The Advent worship is taken like a journey through the Christmas story

represented by the five candles of “Hope, Peace, Love, Joy and the Birth

of Jesus”.
