Welcome
Welcome to the June edition of the Parklands newsletter. It is
hard to believe that we are nearly half way through 2017. It has
been a very busy month with competitions, field trips and
workshops. There is also a lot happening behind the scenes to
acquire a new projector for the club; more information to come
soon.
Janusz Molinski judged the PEOPLE AT WORK competition.
Janusz is a professional photographer based in Melbourne and
has extensive experience in commercial work. His photography is
used in promotions for government and for many corporate
clients. You will find some of his work at

Congratulations to the winners in the People at Work competition,
the images are displayed later in this newsletter.
The next workshop is coming up this Thursday 22 June.
We have a guest speaker, Mark Dadswell who is
presenting on Sports Photography. Mark is recognised as
one of Australia’s leading sports, commercial and portrait
photographers. Details of this workshop is below.
A few of our club members took part in the recent field trips
led by Charlie, and you will see some of their photographs
showcased in this newsletter.
You will also find some ideas of events around town and
surrounds, for either taking photographs or attending
exhibitions.

22 June Workshop: Sports Photography
With over 25 years experience, Melbourne photographer Mark Dadswell is recognised as one of Australia’s most respected sports, commercial, and portrait photographers. He’s covered the world’s biggest sporting events including the Olympic Games, appeared in major publications such as Sports Illustrated, and been honoured with prestigious awards in photography and journalism. With his father a local newspaper editor, Mark’s illustrious career began young, immersed in media and shooting photographs on a myriad of topics and events. He soon graduated to the renowned Getty Images organisation, covering the Olympic Games in Sydney, Athens, and Beijing, the world track and field titles in Helsinki, Osaka, Berlin and Daegu, AFL grand finals, Australian International Cricket tours, International horse racing events, and fifteen Australian Open tennis championships. Mark has enjoyed critical acclaim throughout his career. His photograph of Usain Bolt winning the 200 metres title at the 2008 Beijing Olympics won a major award at the World Press Awards. Mark has been nominated twice for the prestigious Walkley Awards for journalism and photography, and has been awarded by the National Press Photographers Association and the Australian Sports Commission. Mark will be presenting on areas such as:

Loading your images into lightroom
1. Basic processing

Those attending are invited to bring one image to the workshop and if time permits we will
have a go at processing some. Preferably unprocessed RAW images but if you shoot in jpg
and want to bring one that hasn’t been post processed, that is ok.

Workshop dates for 2017
August 10: Competition Theme – Open
For the August competition, if you are entering a digital image through the club website, the
deadline is 10pm on Sunday 16 July, to allow time for the images to be prepared for judging.
Print entries can be brought to the previous competition night (13 July) or be delivered to Gail
Crennan by the deadline 10pm on Sunday 16 July. Late entries will not be accepted.
If you enter a print in any of the competitions, please remember to also lodge a digital copy
through the Club website. This makes it easier to include winning entries in the newsletter. To
do this, go to the “members” section of the website, then click on “EDI upload” at the top of the
page. You will see a box at the bottom of the next page marked PRINT ENTRIES. Just click
on those words and follow the prompts.

Ballarat International Foto Biennale – Volunteers required
19 August to 17 September 2017 Ballarat International Foto Biennale is calling for people who have a passion for photography and the arts to join the team of volunteers. The Ballarat International Foto Biennale was founded in 2005 and attracts significant International and Australian photographers as one of Australia’s pre-eminent photographic festivals.
The program includes 99 free and 1 paid exhibition, features special events and workshops over the five weekends and is expected to attract an attendance of over 50,000 people!
Volunteers are the public face of BIFB so you will communicate information about the festival – exhibitions, public programs and workshops – and answer questions from the public. You will need to commit to at least three shifts during the 30-day festival.

Victorian Association of Photographic Societies (VAP) Results
Congratulations to Sharon McDowall on having her image “Wanaka Rakau” selected to go up
to the Australian Interstate Photographic Competition (AIPC) in the Monochrome EDPI
category. Images and results will be presented at the APSCON convention in Forster NSW in
October
Also, congratulations to Clyde and Nerissa on their high scores at the VAPS competition. Both
Clyde and Nerissa scored 14 out of 15 for their images below.

What’s on around town and surrounds….
Open House Melbourne Weekend 2017
29 and 30 July
10am – 4pm
Celebrating 10 years of the Open House Melbourne Weekend and opening more doors than ever before.
On average, visitors get to see 4 to 5 buildings a day. Before deciding on what to visit, please check specific opening dates and times, as some buildings only open for one day or only during specific times. Nearly all buildings are open access and self-guided. Some buildings have pre-booked tours, due to their limited capacity, and will require a small booking fee to reserve your place.

Gertrude Street Projection Festival 21 – 30 July
For 10 evenings in July and in over 38 sites, the length of Gertrude Street in Fitzroy is illuminated by the visions of talented projections artists for the Gertrude Street Projection Festival. The Image Makers Seminar Series: Jo Duck

Photography Studies College (Melbourne) presents a seminar with former student and international fashion and advertising photographer, Jo Duck.
Jo is inspired by film and is drawn to the unusual. A strong sense of wit pervades her work. Jo aims to envelop herself in the story of each shoot, fleshing out ideas and concepts, and often designing playlists to accompany the creation of her visuals.
Jo’s work has appeared in publications such as Oyster, i-D, and Wonderland. She has shot for a range of premium fashion and arts clients, including Mimco, Jack London, Nike, Rollas, The Australian Ballet and the Melbourne Theatre Company. The National Geographic Photo Ark
1 July – 1 October

The National Geographic Photo Ark is coming to Melbourne Zoo. This exclusive photo exhibition is using the power of photography to inspire people to save animals before it’s too late.
For many of Earth’s creatures, time is running out. Species are disappearing at an alarming rate. The National Geographic Photo Ark is pursuing the ambitious goal of photographing every species in the world's zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, to inspire action through education, and help save wildlife by supporting on-the-ground conservation projects.
This multi-year effort with National Geographic Fellow and photographer Joel Sartore will create intimate portraits of an estimated 12,000 species of birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Once completed, the National Geographic Photo Ark will serve as an important record of these animals’ existence and a powerful testament to the importance of saving them.
Opening in July, Melbourne Zoo will host a curated photographic exhibition showcasing these incredible portraits of animals on the brink. Cost included with general admission.

Refugee Week 2017. Through film and photography,
this exhibition explores the human dignity, identity
and strength in people from refugee backgrounds.
Stories represented in the exhibition celebrate the courage and resilience of participants who
have undertaken diverse journeys to Australia throughout different points in history. From
Holocaust survivors to refugees to the most recent young arrivals, the stories prove that your
past does not define you, but can give you more strength to move forward with confidence.
Stories About Hope is sponsored by Maurice Blackburn, Australia's leading social justice firm.
The free exhibition will be complemented by a comprehensive program throughout the week,
including a ticketed opening-night launch featuring an artists' guided tour, and a number of
advocacy and educational workshops.

Pakenham National Photographic Exhibition 2017
The Club holds a National Photographic Exhibition which is a competition open to all residents of Australia. The Club has so far held 12 hugely successful Nationals, and hopes that the 13th National will be just as successful. The 13th Exhibition is being held on the 9th and 10th September 2017 at Cardinia Cultural Centre, Lakeside Boulevard, Pakenham.

Reserve Forces Day Parade
Sunday 7 July
10am – 11.30am
The Reserve Forces Day Parade will be held at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne on Sunday July 2, 2017. This year the parade commemorates the century of the Battle of Beersheba.
Light horse men and women on horseback in WW1 costume will be participating in the parade. There will be a RAAF vintage aircraft flyover as well as a static display of Heritage service vehicles and equipment.
From Government House Drive and march to the Shrine forecourt where a commemorative wreath laying ceremony will be conducted.
Spectators are most welcome.
Docklands Firelight Festival 30 June – 2 July
5pm – 9pm
Venue: NewQuay Promenade, Docklands
The Docklands Firelight Festival takes the traditions of a winter solstice and combines this with a modern celebration of arts, music, food, fire and fun.
With roving performers from fire breathers and dancers to drummers and musicians. Each night, the festivities will culminate with an impressive fire display – a large effigy will be set alight with a fireworks display as the backdrop. This is a free event.

Princes Pier, Port Melbourne – Saturday 27th May
Charlie organised two field trips for
Parklands members; the first being at
Princes Pier. Members had the
opportunity to get some valuable tips from
Charlie, Clyde and Nerissa on taking
photos of some iconic spots around the
pier.

Murchison Gap Lookout, Strath Creek – Sunday 11th June
On a very cold Sunday morning, some brave
members headed for Murchison Gap Lookout at
6.30am ready for sunrise. Unfortunately, it was
nearly a fog white-out, but a few photo
opportunities were still achieved.
After breakfast, it was off to the old Chevoit
Railway Tunnel.
Thank you to Charlie, for organising a couple of
excellent outings, learning opportunities and a
good time enjoying each other’s company.

Photography in a cold environment
Most people escape to warmer climates during winter, however there will be some who are
attracted to the cold weather and the beautiful snowy landscapes it brings. Shooting in cold
weather presents problems for both photographers and their equipment. Photographer Andrew
Peacock shares his essential tips on cold weather photography.
