Please note that program times in all locations are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and lunch will be provided. Stearns County Discovery Farm Field Day, June 28 The Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District, in partnership with the Sauk River Watershed District, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Ser-vice, MN Department of Agriculture and MN Agricultural Water Resources Cen-ter are planning a eld day at the Nick and Tara Meyer Dairy Farm-Stearns County Discovery Farm near Sauk Centre, Minn. The eld day is set for Thursday, June 28, and will begin at 9 a.m. and continue to approximately 11:30 a.m. Milk and cookies will be provided. The target audi-ence for this eld day will include landowners, local government unit employees, elected of cials, and any other interested parties. The eld day will consist of a tour and presentations on the following: Mississippi River Basin Initiative Pro-gram; Minnesota Discovery Farms Overview; Stearns County Discovery Farm soils and farming system; Stearns County Discovery Farm equipment and data; Stearns County Discovery Farm sample collection process; Question and Answer session with landowners Nick and Tara Meyer. Discovery Farms Minnesota is a farmer-led effort to gather information and assess the water quality impact of different types of farms, in landscapes all across Minnesota. The mission of the Discovery Farms program is to gather water quality information under real-world conditions, providing practical, credible, site-spe-ci c information to enable better farm management. The program is designed to collect accurate measurements of sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus movement over the soil surface and through subsurface drainage tiles and to generate a bet-ter understanding of the relationship between agricultural land management and water quality. Nick and Tara Meyer, who own and operate Meyer Dairy Farm south of Sauk Centre, were selected by the Minnesota Agricultural Water Resource Center to participate in the Discovery Farms program in 2010. The data monitoring sites were installed and fully functional by March 2011. Surface water runoff and sub-surface drainage from the edge of eld site will be collected for a total of 5-7 years. The data received from the site will be analyzed for sediment, total phosphorus, phosphate phosphorus, total ammonium, and nitrate nitrogen in an effort to calcu-late total nutrient and sediment movement. “We are proud to be a part of the Discovery Farm program, because as farm-ers, we know environmental stewardship and farming go hand in hand,” said Tara. Nick and Tara Meyer also received the Outstanding Conservationist Award from the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District in 2009.

Short courses offered to attendees will cover a range of topics geared to-wards dairy producers, their employees and milk quality advisers. Topics include:milking system testing and analysis, motivating dairy farm employees, bulk tankand milk sampling techniques and interpretation of results, a session for Spanishspeaking milkers, and other topics. Some short courses will provide on-farm op-portunities to apply knowledge gained. Registration and additional information soon will be available at www.nmcon-line.org.

Replastering and Complete Silo Repair At Its Best!

Silo Replastering is a very specialized business that we excel in, due to experience, the best equipment and mixture for cement.

We high pressure blast the walls for the cleanest and roughest fi nish. The rougher the better. We want the walls to get moist so the stave doesn’t dry the plaster any faster than possible; It is ex-tremely important that all old silage and corroded con-crete be removed. This impor-tant wall clean-up will assure the Osakis crew that the new

plaster will bond completely with the existing silo walls.

A special combination of cement, hard-ener, plaster sand, and water are thor-oughly mixed to create heavy, rich con-

crete plaster. The pumped and applied under pressure to the silo walls, during this process, the silo crew makes every effort to fi ll any voids or worn spots on the wall. We also hand trowel for a very smooth fi nish for a slick wall.3rd

2nd

Once the silo is washed, we rinse and re-rinse the bot-tom; again the cleaner the wall, the better the bond.

The fi nished p r o d u c t ; Heavy plas-ter, very rich c o n c r e t e , seals your silo, allows the feed to clean off the wall much better. All this applied by the com-

pany you know will stand be-hind what we sell!

Nominations sought for the “2013 MOSES Organic Farmer of the Year” award

The Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES) is seek-ing nominations for the “MOSES 2013 Organic Farmer of the Year” award which will be presented at the 24th annual MOSES Organic Farming Conference in LaCrosse, Wis., February 21-23, 2013. For the 11th year now, MOSES will recognize an outstanding organic farmeror farm family who are innovators; who excel in managing their farm resources such as soil, water, wildlife, and biodiversity; and who serve as educators andshining examples in their communities, and to the next generation of organic farm-ers. Francis and Susan Thicke of Radiance Dairy in Fair eld, Iowa, received the2012 Organic Farmer of the Year Award. The Thickes serve as the “communitydairy” of Fair eld, marketing a variety of products from their 80-cow organic Jer-sey herd within four miles of the farm. “We felt very honored to receive the awardbecause we know there are many creative and innovative organic farmers in theMidwest,” Francis said. “They all deserve recognition for what they do. I wouldencourage people to nominate outstanding organic farmers they know for the 2013 Organic Farmer of the Year.” Anyone can nominate a farmer for the award. Nomination forms are availableby calling the MOSES of ce at 715-778-5775 or at the MOSES website, www.mosesorganic.org/foy.html. All nominations are due by Sept. 15, 2012. The MOSES Organic Farmer of the Year award is presented at the annual MO-SES Organic Farming Conference, which had 3,100 attendees in 2012. It includesa cash gift of $500, full registration to the 2013 Organic Farming Conference, lodging during the conference, and a gift certi cate redeemable at the conferencebook sales booth.

LSP’s Farm Beginnings course accepting applications for 2012-2013 session until Aug. 1

The Land Stewardship Project (LSP) is now accepting applications for its2012-2013 Farm Beginnings course. Farm Beginnings class sessions will beginthis fall and are being offered in the communities of Morris, Minn., and RiverFalls, Wis. The application deadline for the 2012-2013 Farm Beginnings course is Aug.1. For application materials or for more information, see www.farmbeginnings.org or contact Karen Benson at 507-523-3366; [email protected]. In 2012, LSP’s Farm Beginnings program is marking its 15th year of provid-ing rsthand training in low-cost, sustainable methods of farming. The course is tailor-made for people of all ages just getting started in farming, as well as es-tablished farmers looking to make changes in their operations. Farm Beginningsparticipants learn goal setting, nancial planning, enterprise planning, marketing and innovative production techniques. Classes are led by farmers and other agricultural professionals from the area. The classes, which meet approximately twice-a-month, run until March 2013, fol-lowed by an on-farm education component that includes farm tours and skills ses-sions. The fee is $1,500 per farming partnership ( exible payment plan and partialscholarships available), and early-bird registrants are eligible to attend on-farm education events this summer and fall.

Farm safety includes a rst-aid kit As the pace of farm activities picks up in the summer, the likelihood of ac-cidents also increases. That means having a rst-aid kit on the farm is essential, according to J.W.Schroeder, the North Dakota State University Extension Service’s dairy specialist. “But because workplaces vary widely in their location and size, the degree ofhazards that can occur, the amount of staff training and availability of professionalmedical services, Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards do notrequire farms to have speci c contents in rst-aid kits,” he says. He recommends starting with a basic range of rst-aid items to deal with mosttypes of injuries encountered on the farm.

After using it the fi rst time we couldn’t believe how the cows used the stalls. It was unbelievable! All the others we looked at are fi xed. This one has hydraulics and is very easy to maneuver around the barn. It’s very heavy duty. There is nothing we would change about it. We love it!

“This is our sixth Patz mixer. We use the same ration in our Patz vertical as we did in our last auger mixer. The mix is more uniform from front to back and we save 1-1/2 hours a day feeding.”

O’Loughlin Farms, John and Steve O’Loughlin of Shakopee, MN.
