International student admission opens on 30 October 2009 and closes on 15 October 2010. Courses in São Paulo start in February 2010: admission closes on 30 January 2010.To apply, students must follow IED application procedures:

1st step:• Complete the IED application

form overleaf• Pay the enrolment fee in order to

guarantee access to the school and receive the enrolment certificate for visa procedures

Prepare the following documents:

• A copy of your high school diploma or equivalent (translated into Italian, Spanish or English)

• Proof of language proficiency (one of the following):

- submit a “language course certificate”

- submit Italian/Spanish/English university diploma

- proof of competence by telephone interview for bilingual students

• 4 passport photos

• Photocopy of your valid passport (pages with personal data and photograph)

2nd step: mail the original and photocopied documents to the School of your choice.

portFolio: A portfolio is compulsory for transferring students (direct admission to 2nd and 3rd year) and for first-year Transportation/car design students (in this case, submit about 10 hand drawings of transportation). In all other cases, a portfolio is advisable for quicker admission to and participation in competitions for scholarships.

Students previously enrolled in an equivalent programme may apply for direct admission to the 2nd year or (in exceptional cases) the 3rd year.

1st step: to enter the 2nd or 3rd year, mail the following items to the school of your choice in order to begin the admission process:• a copy of your university/college

diploma (if obtained)• a transcript issued by the

university/college that you attended previously (credits, amount of hours per subject, study programmes)

• A portfolio of 15-20 examples of your projects (CD-ROM, preferred e-mail address)

• A portfolio description sheet listing each piece by number, size and date of completion

2nd step: students will be informed of their acceptance by e-mail no later than two weeks after their portfolio has been received.

3rd step: students must pay the enrolment fee immediately upon receiving notice of acceptance into the 2nd or 3rd year and forward the

Most of our three-year courses are taught in the local language (Italian in Milan, Rome, Turin, Cagliari; Spanish in Madrid, Barcelona; Portuguese in São Paulo). Exceptions are made for all the three-year courses taught in English. All international students must meet the IED language requirements and submit a “certificate of course completion” from a language school. Those students who hold an Italian, Spanish, Portuguese or English College diploma can submit this diploma as confirmation of their language skills.

ied italian/spanish/portuguese language entrance requirementIn order to be eligible for the compulsory Italian language course.• Far-Eastern students: 700 hours.• European and English speaking students: 320 hours.• Italian, Spanish and Portuguese speaking students: 160 hours. On request, these students may avoid the language prerequisite course submitting a certificate from a language school testifying the attendance to an Italian/Spanish course of at least 160 hours.• All other foreign students: 320 hours.

Immediately prior to entrance, international students enrolled in three-year courses in the Italian or Spanish language are required to attend a compulsory Italian/Spanish language course.

compulsory course programmeStudents also attend a preparatory class in Italian/Spanish art and culture to achieve more advanced language skills and the ability to understand design subjects.• Period A: September 2010, for all participating students.• Period B: October 2010 - April 2011, only for students who fail the examination at the end of Period A.

Students must sit an entrance exam to appraise their language skills. Students will be divided into groups according to their skills and will receive documents detailing the course schedule.

Student Visas Upon receipt of the enrolment payment, the school will send the enrolment certificate to the student by express post. This certificate should be taken to the local Consulate to apply for a Student Visa.

Our SIO (Student Information Office) will assist students to choose the course that suits them best, providing them with all useful information about accommodation, transportation, insurance, visas, residence permits, banking, tuition payment procedures, housing, language courses, academic policies and regulations.

They will also be informed about any school event and educational planning. Student counselling staff is available by appointment.

Students attending the compulsory Italian/Spanish language course will begin in September. Students not attending Italian/Spanish language courses or attending courses held in English will begin in October. Courses in São Paulo begin in February.

general accommodation services in all ied locations:IED offers services to students seeking apartments or housing in a residence. IED suggests students should first live in a residence and then later rent an apartment, sharing it with IED students. Residential hotels offer either single or double rooms with private bathroom, kitchenette, linen, towels and heating. The range of permanent housing available varies in Italy and Spain. Please see below for more details and general costs.

PAYMentS The following charges have to be paid according to the IED payment procedures. Remember that the admission process will only begin

when payment of the enrolment fee has been received. Payments should be made directly to the chosen IED location.Once submitted the documents for applying, the enrolment fee should be paid by the following three months (the time the place would be kept). If not IED assumes the candidate is no longer interested.

witHdRAwAl And RefundThe following refund is based on the entire amount paid for first-year tuition. A refund will only be made if an official letter of withdrawal is received by the Student Information Office within the following time schedule:

compulsory italian / spanish language course students:Withdrawal by 22 August: you forfeit the enrolment fee (€ 2,000). Withdrawal by 2 September: you forfeit the enrolment fee plus the cost of the compulsory language course (€ 2,000 + € 1,750/€ 900).No refunds will be issued after these dates.

other students:Withdrawal by 30 September: you forfeit the enrolment fee.Withdrawal after 30 September: you forfeit the total fee.No refunds will be issued after these dates.

general practical informationForeign students will be contacted by the Student Information Office (SIO) for the exact date of the Orientation Day at IED Milan.

ViSA

All foreign students coming from non-EU countries must obtain a visa from the Italian/Spanish Consulate or from one of the Italian/Spanish diplomatic represen-tatives in their countries of origin.

documents you need to obtain a visa:1. a valid passport2. your enrolment certificate (the declara-tion issued by Istituto Europeo di Design in which the school guarantees that the student is duly enrolled)3. the conditions of accommodation in Italy/Spain (residence or hotel reserva-tion, rental of an apartment etc.)4. a consular statement concerning health care in Italy/Spain. Students must also prove that they have sufficient means of subsistence for their entire stay in Italy/Spain and to go back in their home country.

colombian studentsIED offers a free service through our partners in Colombia - Family Firm Con-sulting Ltda. They advise students about the necessary documentation and handle students’ visa applications with the Span-ish consulate. This minimises the num-ber of applications refused.

All foreign students who plan to study in Spain have to apply for a residence per-mit (Tarjeta de Residencia). The appli-cation procedure and the validity of the permit vary from country to country and also with the motivation of the request.

eu studentsStudents from the EU receive a residence permit valid for 5 years and renewable therafter. Please note that this does not depend in any way on economic activi-ties.

All foreign Non-EU students must ensure that their IED enrolment certificate is duly signed and stamped by the embassy or consulate that issued their visa. This certificate must then be returned to IED before lectures commence.
