Dear Parishioners, We begin Advent this weekend. You will notice the purple colour in our Church. Advent is the time of preparation for celebrating the birth of Jesus – “remember the reason for the season”. Please keep Jesus in your wishes and Christmas cards (not Xmas and holiday greetings). The piety stall has a good bargain of 8 Christmas cards for $3.00. You will notice the hymns at Mass are Advent hymns – O Emmanuel, Advent Litany, O Come Emmanuel and a new hymn promising ‘hope in the future’ Joyful in Hope (no Christmas carols until Christmas Mass). We will have a few minutes of silence after Holy Communion to reflect and thank God for all the good things in our lives. We are advertising to replace our Youth Coordinators Steven and Eloise. We advertised in the Catholic Leader last week and this week seeking a suitable replacement for our ”dynamic duo”. Anyone wishing to apply can ask for a job description from the Parish Office during normal office hours. The advertisement in the Catholic Leader indicates a prospective Youth Coordinator will need to apply by this Wednesday. We have a new Advent Wreath. A big thank you to John for creating and making the Advent Wreath. The “Little Blue Book” is available at the front door of the Church to assist in our prayers and reflections during Advent. The “Little Blue Book” is available for $4.00. The monthly Seniors Mass will be held next Friday at 10.00am followed by a Christmas morning tea. This Mass will be an Anointing Mass for anyone who is sick or getting on in years. A big thank you to Bernadette Christian and her helpers for organising the Mass and morning tea throughout the year. Our Friendship Group has their last function this Wednesday. Congratulations to the organising committee again for a very successful year for our Friendship Group. You are invited to join in the Rosary, Mass and celebrations next Saturday morning beginning at 10.00am to reflect on the Immaculate Conception of Mary. For everyone who attended the Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults seminar in October, there is ”a certificate of attendance” available at the front door of the Church. You will notice underneath the statue of Mary that there are some electric candles. You may like to make an offering as you ask the intercession of Mary for the needs of your life. The electric candle is activated by simply touching the small knob in front of the candle. A big thank you to all those in the Marian groups who contributed in enabling us to pay for the electric candle stand. We are in process of attaching small plaques to different items throughout the Church. These plaques are in recognition of those who contributed towards the different items throughout the Church. We will finish placing the small plaques on the different items next week. Also we have almost finished in preparing names of those who contributed financially to the Church – these many names will be placed on the glass doors at the side of the Church. First Sunday of Advent: Year B

Introduction: As we grow in age (and it is to be hoped, in wisdom) we come to understand more fully the importance of being prepared for whatever God, under the guise of life, of people and events, offers us by way of encouragement and consolation, and also by way of challenge. We grid ourselves to give thanks for whatever the Church’s new liturgical year has in store.

First Reading: Isaiah 63: 16-17, 64: 1, 3-8 In this prayer, the prophet seems to remind God, but actually reminds the people of how morally weak and inconstant they are, how much in need of God’s patient mercy. The prayer expresses humble confidence of receiving that mercy.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1: 3-9 While we are waiting for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed, we have the teaching of the apostles and their successors, the scriptural word and the gifts of the Spirit to sustain us on our pilgrimage.

Gospel: Mark 13: 33-37 Jesus wants his disciples to be in no doubt about the importance of living in such a way as always to be ready for our call to meet the Lord.

‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS Looking to Jesus: The Vocation of the Family

The Sacrament of Matrimony

75. In the Church’s Latin tradition, the ministers of the sacrament of marriage are the man and the woman who marry; by manifesting their consent and expressing it physically, they receive a great gift. Their consent and their bodily union are the divinely appointed means whereby they become “one flesh”. By their baptismal consecration, they were enabled to join in marriage as the Lord’s ministers and thus to respond to God’s call. Hence, when two non-Christian spouses receive baptism, they need not renew their marriage vows; they need simply not reject them, since by the reception of baptism their union automatically becomes sacramental. Canon Law also recognises the validity of certain unions celebrated without the presence of an ordained minister. The natural order has been so imbued with the redemptive grace of Jesus that “a valid matrimonial contract cannot exist between the baptised without it being by that fact a sacrament”. The Church can require that the wedding be celebrated publicly, with the presence of witnesses and other conditions that have varied over the course of time, but this does not detract from the fact that the couple who marry are the ministers of the sacrament. Nor does it affect the centrality of the consent given by the man and the woman, which of itself established the sacramental bond. This having been said, there is a need for further reflection on God’s action in the marriage rite; this is clearly manifested in the Oriental Churches through the importance of the blessing that the couple receive as a sign of the gift of the Spirit.

SUNNYBANK SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY Dealing with ‘illegals’

‘The honest way to deal with the people on Manus Island and Nauru would have been to put some in cages on permanent display in city squares, and others in cattle trucks travelling the country with extended stays in provincial malls. Thus the Australian people in whose name the guiltless have been imprisoned could face them squarely, and weep or taunt as their feelings incline them. The cowards’ way is to put them out of sight, and then invent a convenient narrative and new words – such as “illegals” – to satisfy themselves that Australians continue to be good. It is by this process, surely, that a cabinet minister who with good reason finds it “absurd” that he should be punished because his family were refugees does not find it just as absurd for his government to punish refugees on Manus Island and Nauru – or if he does, judges it impolitic to say so.’ Don Watson

Silent Adoration

“We all mean to ‘keep Christ in Christmas’ perhaps by praying more often, but somehow all the busyness gets in the way. Why not set aside a specific time for prayer, just like you do for all your other important appointments, and come to Adoration in Our Lady of Lourdes Church each Tuesday night from 7.00pm until 8.00pm. Come for part or all of the hour and rest in the Presence of the Lord.’

We know that many people will be

going on holidays in the next few weeks

so, even though we don’t finish up until

the 31st of December, we wanted to

take the opportunity this weekend to

thank each and every one of our

parishioners for all your support, prayers and encouragement over the years that we have

been the youth ministers at our parish.

It has been an absolute joy to serve this parish community! We feel so blessed to have been

your parish youth ministers for so long.

Deciding to resign was a tough decision for us as this ministry and community have been a

HUGE part of our lives. However, as they say, all good things must come to an end and we

know this is the right time, for our little family, to finish as the youth ministers.

This parish community will always hold a special place in our hearts.

We would like to take the time to thank a few people, firstly, our Priests; particularly Fr Ray

and Fr Dan who entrusted the youth to us and of course to all the associate priests who have

helped us and supported us over the years, especially Fr Dom over the last couple of years...

thank you for being willing to say Masses at weird times, stay up late hearing confessions

and for just supporting us in this vital ministry and trusting us even when we had slightly

crazy ideas. To the Parish Office Staff, thank you for your support and for always being

willing to help when we asked, a special thank you to Karrin who was often our sounding

board and a huge support to us. To all our leaders… we could not have done this ministry

without each of you, especially over the last 4 years with our kids, each of you have really

become an extended part of our family, not only to us but also to our boys, and we hope that

won’t change!! To all those who helped on the Sunday night Ministry Roster, thank you

for always being willing to help (especially at the last minute) and for making the Sunday

evening Masses the BEST in Brisbane! Thank you to all those who have supported the youth

ministry through prayer and finances, you certainly made our job easier. Finally, to the

youth and young adults… it has been SUCH an honour and privilege to watch you grow

over the years and journey with so many of you!!

We will definitely miss being a part of this community!!! We will do our best to make sure

we’re not strangers!! Please know that you will all be in our prayers often.

Much love and many blessings,

Steven, Eloise, Isaac and Joseph xx
