FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3

Pastoral Reflec on

P. Ray

As we celebrate the our 243rd year of Independence, our thoughts often, and rightly, turn to God in Thanks-giving for the freedom we enjoy. In a political sense, freedom is the absence of constraints, such as our free-dom of speech, the press, and religion. This is not to be confused with our rights, which are privileges we be-lieve to be inherent for all people, such as the right to assemble, the right to certain information, and the right to bear arms. As Christians, when we bring up this word freedom, our Biblical understandings are quite different from this political interpretation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us freedom is so much more than an ab-sence of constraint, it is that quality by which we attain our full stature of humanity. The Catechism describes freedom as “a force for growth and maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection when directed toward God…” (CCC1731) Freedom is the force by which we are perfected. Too often today freedom is seen as an unlimited right where no one has a right to tell me what to do. This is not freedom, this is the Peter Pan syndrome, where one stays forever immature. St Paul reminds the Corinthians and us that certainly “…everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial.” (I Cor 10:23) Because true freedom is only found in God, then freedom must be something that bring us to what is good. This good we are to seek, this good that will bring freedom, is not good in a selfish sense, but good as in what will bring us to our full being and it is our free will is that tool by which we shape our life. We experience freedom to the degree we live in goodness, which starts with God and finds its completion in God Because God is love, love is that action which leads us on the path of freedom. As such, freedom is not a right of certain countries but the great desire of God for all. And it is possible for all, not to the degree we are in con-straints or not, but to the degree that we make good choices in our situation. In this way, Nelson Mandela was able to see how someone in a prison can still be free, because no one can take away their ability to live in truth and it is the “truth that will set you free.” (John 8:32) As Americans, many of us to celebrate our freedom with parades, picnics, and fireworks, but as Catholics and Christians, God invites us to a deeper freedom lived in truth, goodness to others, and love, and the greatest of these is love.

Father Ray

FAITH FORMATION UPDATES 626-988-9288 Connie Perez, Georgina Mayorga

We are calling people to live out a vocation! Serving as a catechist is more than simple volunteerism. It is more than performing a func-tion. It is more than filling a slot. It is a vocation: a call from God to serve his Church! Perhaps this notion of catechists as having a vocation is new to you. In days gone by, we thought of vocations as pertaining to priests and nuns. While that is true, all people have a vocation: a

calling to live a life of holiness. Being a catechist is one of them. As a catechist you can use this opportunity to grow in your faith, in your relationship with the Lord, and in holiness. You will not merely be teaching kids, you will be a living symbol of God’s love working through you. You will not be alone, we offer year around training, retreats, and in-service sessions for all parts of the litur-gical year and we will be there every step of the way. You will become part of our family and develop life-long friendships with other catechists while you serve the Lord and grow in your faith.

Please answer the call…Won’t you say “yes”? Come in, let’s have coffee and chat.

Please call the office of Faith Formation for more details

Connie Perez - Director of Faith Formation - 626-988-9288

FAITH FORMATION CORNER
