FROM THE PASTOR I hope you all had a wonderful Independence Day. A special word of thanks to our Knights of Columbus who, once again, were here to volunteer to collect an offering from those people using our parking lot to go view the fireworks that Washington Borough provides every year. They’re here each year giving up some of their time on a

holiday to help our parish make a little bit of extra money.

We are now well into vacation season. I would be remiss in my responsibilities if I didn’t remind you, as I do each year at this time, that God does not take a vacation from you. So, please do not think that being on vacation means it’s OK to take a break from God. No matter where you are going in the world I can probably assist you in finding out the name and location of the nearest Catholic church and what their Mass schedule will be. So, “I didn’t know where to find a church or get to Mass” isn’t really a good excuse anymore thanks to the internet.

If, however, you are going to be traveling to a place or at a time when you know it will not be possible for you to get to Mass (such as taking a cruise and being at sea on a Sunday on a ship with no priest) then you should stop by the Rectory Office to see me or even just come to see me after Mass and request permission to miss Mass. As the Pastor of your parish I have the authority to give my parishioners a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass for an occasion such as that. So, even if you miss Mass while traveling you will not be committing a mortal sin because you have been dispensed. PLEASE NOTE: You have to have a genuinely good reason for requesting such a dispensation. Just because you may be traveling and don’t care to go to Mass is NOT considered a genuinely good excuse. As I have already alluded to I will remind you that wantonly skipping Mass without a just cause or a dispensation is a mortal sin and must be Confessed and absolved prior to receiving Holy Communion once again. Confessions here at St. Joseph are heard every Saturday from 4:00 until 4:45Pm or you may make an appointment to see me at any convenient time. When I say “make an appointment” that does not mean you must Confess face-to-face or in my Office. If it will make it easier for you I will be happy to arrange a day and time at your convenience when I will be equally happy to wait for you in the Confessional so that you may meet me there and still Confess anonymously.

Summer is a great time of the year to enjoy the outdoors, the warm weather, and a chance to travel to see friends, family and far away places. I hope you all have a great summer. Just remember that the Lord is always with you; He is always the Lord; and He is always worthy of our praise and worship...even when we’re on vacation!
