Pink Challah Bake FAQs

Q: Why should we consider adding a Pink Challah Bake to our program?

A: A Pink Challah Bake can be used as an opportunity to educate the community on issues that are

often not discussed from the bimah. It is a great way to speak to women and even teens about

health empowerment. And it’s fun!

Q: When should we schedule a Pink Challah Bake?

A: It’s best to schedule any program when it works best for your community, but many synagogues

choose a Wednesday or Thursday evening, so the challah will be fresh for Shabbat.

Q: How do I get pink challah dough?

A: Some synagogues are lucky enough to have a congregant who can make the dough. Most have a

local bakery provide it. Either way, the dough is made before the event. FYI: the dough can be

colored with beet juice or food coloring.

Q: Do we need a kitchen to make this happen?

A: No. The prepared dough is braided by participants and rises for the second time during the

educational component of the program. It is ready to bake (or freeze) when participants arrive

home. Baking time varies by oven, but is usually 20-25 minutes at 350o.

Q: Is there anything special that should be done with the finished challah?

A: Yes! Encourage participants to invite guests for a Shabbat meal, and when their guests ask why

the challah is pink, the host can begin to spread awareness! Alternatively, the challah can be

served at the synagogue Oneg or Kiddush.

Q: How do we get started?

A: Reach out to Sharsheret to receive a shopping list, giveaways, advice, and more.

Educational Content for Synagogue Bulletins

In addition to program promotion, this is the perfect time to include educational content in your weekly

or monthly congregational bulletin. Below is a brief introduction to the topic. Remember, to order

Sharsheret’s free educational resources to have displayed in your building.

Breast and ovarian cancers, once viewed as secular health concerns, are increasingly recognized as

heightened health issues for Jewish women and families. 1 in 40 Jews of Ashkenazi descent carries

a BRCA (breast cancer) gene mutation, compared to 1 in 400 in the general population, making

Jewish families 10x more susceptible to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Furthermore, 1 in 8

women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime, and more than 13,000 women under

40 are diagnosed annually.

This fall, take the necessary steps to protect your health before a diagnosis, or to detect cancer in the

early stages when it is easier to treat:

• Learn your family cancer history. You can find a helpful tool for this purpose on the

Sharsheret website by searching ‘family tree.’

• Create a personalized screening plan with your doctor.

• Attend the community’s Sharsheret Pink Shabbat® and other awareness events to learn

more regarding being proactive about your health.

• Contact Sharsheret with questions or for support: (866) 474-2774 or [email protected].
