How Will You Keep Your “Awe out of Storage” in
5779? Here we are, in one of my most favorite months of the year, October. It is a personal favorite for a number of reasons, the weather attempts to get cooler, the leaves here in Birmingham are turning into beautiful shades of orange, red, and yellow, football season
is escalating, our wardrobes change to shades of crimson, orange, (or black and gold for the Saints, in my case), and pumpkin spice is in everything – and I mean everything. Another reason October is a wonderful time of year is the experience felt from the High Holy Days. During these “Days of Awe”, we take the time to pause and turn inward. We remove the sense of self and ask those we may have harmed to please forgive us for any wrongs. We celebrate our Torah and life itself! However, as time moves on from these holidays, we get back into the groove of life and the reflection and awe dwindles until it moves back into storage for next year. My question is, what can we do to keep the High Holy Day experience a bit more active throughout the year? Naturally, we reserve the full effect for Tishrei, but what can we do to extend that mindfulness and respect for others?
This year, I have been given the gift of being your Director of Congregational Engagement. This new role has allowed me to have meaningful conversations with many of you. I have learned that our congregation has a love for our Temple that can withstand many challenges (and has). You are excited about the possibility of a new Rabbi. You are truly grateful that our beloved Cantor has so graciously become our spiritual leader for this year as our Rabbi Search Committee works so diligently to find the perfect candidate to work along side her. You want more adult education, more ways to engage with other congregants, and more ways to communicate with our Temple staff and leadership (have you seen our blog yet?). I am barely grazing the surface with these statements, but the bottom line is the best part of my role is listening to your enthusiasm and reflection on your vision for our Temple past, present, and future.
Now, how does my experience speaking with our congregation work with continuing our High Holy Day experience? You see, having a conversation with someone, no matter who they are, is a way to set aside my sense of self and reserve that moment to hear and understand who someone is. When I get out of my head and listen, no matter what my personal view may be, I tend to learn and grow. This what engagement is all about. To engage with someone is to be present in the experience. Say, “hello” to a stranger this year. Welcome that person who always sits alone at Shabbat. Say, “thank you”. Embrace the moment, even when it is not quite what you anticipated. Ask someone a question beyond “how are you” and learn something new about them. Be present. How will you keep your “awe out of storage” in 5779?
L'Shalom,

Our application was posted on the CCAR website in mid-July. We have received 14 resumes from Rabbis interested in our congregation since then. We continue to receive resumes regularly, from very promising candidates. By the middle of September, we had done 4 teleconference interviews, and more are scheduled. We have two Rabbis who will be coming to Birmingham for personal visits in the near future. We have been impressed by the number and quality of the resumes we have received. The entire committee is dedicated to work diligently to find our next spiritual leader.

The High Holy Day 10-Day Campaign
As we begin the New Year, let us as individuals and as a community work to make the world a better place for all. One of the ways we are called do repair the world is by doing tzedakah. During these Days of Awe, let us give of our time, money and spirit to help those in the community who struggle with daily needs. The money will be distributed to organizations doing the good work here in our city of Birmingham and within the State of Alabama.
The Clothing Bank is grateful for all the generous donations we have received. We still need men's casual shoes, pants and long-sleeved shirts. We are also needing plus-size women's clothing and shoes in size 9 or larger.
We're calling all knitters and crocheters. We are trying to build up a stock of hats, scarves, and mitten/gloves for the winter. Any size is great, but we serve mostly men. We are also happy to accept donations of leftover or unneeded yarn.
Special thanks to the Hermione & Edward Friend Community Fund of the Grafman Endowment Fund for providing materials to facilitate our new Temple Emanu-El Clothes Bank.
Don't forget about the TEE Clothing Bank!

Urban Ministry was founded in 1978 and it helps those living in the West End Community. They offer several programs from gardening to homeless prevention to a life skills internship AND they have a ‘pay as you can’ Community Cafe.
We will be collecting gifts and opening a 'Christmas Store' for families with children between the ages of 1-17. There are several different opportunities in which you can give this year: Volunteering, purchasing gifts or making a donation.

8 Youth & Education
As our High Holiday season comes to a close we celebrate our eight-day harvest festival of Sukkot as well as Simchat Torah, the reading of the end of the Book of Deuteronomy and immediately beginning the Book of Genesis. This symbolic ritual reminds us of the never-ending cycle of study and of life.
A Message…..
"God never gives; God only lends.”
Rabbi Morris Joseph was a rabbi in London and Liverpool during the late-1800s and early-1900s. Contemplating the impact of loss and grief in life, he wrote the following:
"Something precious is taken from us and we think of it as something we have lost, instead of something we have had. We remember how empty our lives are now and tend to forget how full and rich they were before; we forget the many days and years of happiness we lived when the one we love was still with us. We thank God for our treasures when we have them, but cease giving thanks when they are fled.
"But God never gives; God only lends.”
"So instead of mourning because our precious lives have been taken from us, let us be grateful to God for having lent them to us. Let us count the past happy days not as loss, but as gain. We have had them; and now that they are ended, let us turn the loss to glorious gain – the gain that comes with new courage, with nobler tasks, with a wider outlook on life and duty."
This message, which is so much part of this time of year, reminds me of the importance of teaching students to be grateful and to count their blessings. Our 5th graders having been studying the difference between blessings and prayers. As part of our class, I asked each of them to write an original blessing. Below are three examples of their sweet and kind thoughts. May their messages remind us of all that is lent to us and of what we hold dear.
