Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter. This morning we once again get a profession of faith in Jesus from Peter in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. These early professions are forbearers to the creeds we now profess in our liturgy. The profession of faith has developed over the years, just as the church did. We are a living church the Body of Christ. The Gospel story is one we also recognize. Two disciples are leaving Jerusalem and meet Christ on the way. He stays with them and finally breaks bread with them and they know it is Jesus. We break bread together each week, and in doing so, we know God is among us and in us. These Easter stories fill us with confidence for daily living. Congratulations to our children who have received communion this weekend. We had two celebrations on Saturday at St. Agnes, and as always, the children were well-prepared. Along with their families we are very proud of the work they have done to get to know Jesus better and make him a part of their lives. It is always exciting to see their enthusiasm. This Thursday, May 4th, we will celebrate confirmation at St. Kieran with Bishop Perry presiding. This is a big confirmation group and includes students from St. Agnes, St. Kieran, St. Irenaeus and Marian Catholic High School. Over the years, we have combined our local celebrations which help us have a vision of a bigger church. Thanks to all our teachers and catechists who have helped prepare all the children for both First Communion and Confirmation. This weekend, we celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick at St. Agnes. Next weekend, we will do the same at St. Kieran. The Sacrament of the Sick offers healing to those who receive it. The healing may be physical, but oftentimes it strengthens us for whatever is to come. We are a sacramental church that is strengthened by the sacraments at all times of our lives. We pray for those who will receive the Sacrament of the Sick these two weekends. Next Saturday, Union Street Gallery will be celebrating Derby Days at Olympia Fields Country Club. The Union Street Gallery is a treasure in downtown Chicago Heights. I have been a member of the board for a number of years and am glad to see the “Arts” thriving in Chicago Heights. The Derby day is a big fundraiser for the gallery which is non- profit. Tickets are $65. If you would like a ticket or would like to make a donation to the gallery, please call me in the parish office. Finally, today is the St. Kieran Pasta Dinner. There will be music, wine, and friends to pass the time away. The team has worked very hard to make the dinner a success. All the profit from the dinner will go for a set of hand bells for the St. Kieran Choir. Please join us and have some great food. The dinner begins at 11:00 AM and runs until 4:00 PM. Parish News & Events

The children of the St. Agnes/St. Kieran Religious Education Program celebrated First Eucharist yesterday at St. Agnes. Congratulations to St. Kieran parishioners Mia Graziano and Ariana McHenry! Confirmation will take place Thursday, May 4, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Kieran, with the Most Reverend Joseph Perry presiding. The R.E. students will be joined by St. Agnes School students, St. Irenaeus R.E. students, Marian Catholic students, RCIA candidates, and guests from St. Paul and Infant Jesus of Prague Parishes. Sixty-seven in all! Please keep all of these candidates and their families in your prayers. May Crowning will take place during the 10:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 7. All children in attendance will be called forth after Communion to walk in procession to the Holy Family Shrine and honor our Blessed Mother with flowers. Please encourage your children to participate in this beloved tradition. Registration for 2017-2018 Religious Education classes is ongoing. Please complete the registration form sent home with your children, or download one from the St. Kieran website, and return it to the St. Agnes/St. Kieran Religious Education Office as soon as possible. Knights of Columbus

Baby Shower to Benefit the Women’s Center

During the month of May we remember our mothers and, in particular, our Blessed Mother who is honored at this time of year. To highlight and honor motherhood, the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Baby Shower to benefit the mothers served by the Women’s Center. This Catholic-based support center helps mothers who have decided to give birth to their infants instead of opting for abortion. When mothers make this decision, the Women’s Center supplies anything needed to nurture their families.

The Baby Shower will take place all weekends in May. Articles may be left on the designated table for these donations that is in the church vestibule. You may, if you wish, pledge your donation in honor or in memory of a loved one by using the form below. Return the completed form with your donation and they will be placed in a basket to be brought forward in prayer during the Knights of Columbus Rosary Rally after the 10 AM on the last Sunday of the month, May 28. The names will also appear in our bulletin sometime during the first part of June.

Articles needed for the Baby Shower are listed below. The Women’s Center is requesting that clothing be limited to anything between zero and 18 months. The Women’s Center is located at 5116 North Cicero Avenue, Chicago IL 60630; they can be contacted at their office phone of (773) 794-1313 and email at [email protected] at any time. Thanks for your generosity in being a part of this event.
