St. Kieran Catholic Church Third Sunday of Easter April 15, 2018 You alone, O LORD, bring security to my dwelling. — Psalm 4:9 Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter. In our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter professes his faith in the action of Jesus and leaves the door open to anyone who wants to become a follower. All that is required is that we turn away from our sins and reform our lives by living in the light. In the second reading from the first letter of John we hear the same thing. If we sin, we know we have an intercessor in Jesus Christ. We are called to live in the light and new life offered by Jesus. This means every day and every minute of each day; not just one hour a week on Sundays. Tomorrow Bishop Kicanas, the bishop emeri- tus of Tucson Arizona, will be celebrating confirma- tion for us. He will be confirming students and some adults from St. Agnes, St. Kieran, St. Irenaeus, St. Paul, and Marian Catholic High School. He is a good friend of Fr. O’Mara and is in town for Fr. Bill’s 60th anniversary. So, since he was here, we decided to have him celebrate our confirmations. Bishop Kicanas is a native Chicagoan and is glad to be a part of our celebration. The confirmation will be held at St. Irenaeus and begins at 7:00 PM. Please pray for all of these candidates for the sacrament. Thanks to their catechists, teachers, and families who have walked with them on this journey of faith. May the Holy Spirit help them to be living disciples of charity and light. Congratulations to all of you! This coming Saturday, April 21 st , we will also be celebrating First Communion with the students from St. Agnes and St. Kieran parishes. These children have worked hard in school and religious education and are ready to receive Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist. It is a time of pride for their parents as well as the community. We welcome them to the Lord’s Table and pray that they find support and strength in the Body of Christ. Again, thanks to their catechists, teachers, and families who continue to be examples for these children. Two upcoming “foodie” events to put in your calendar. First St. Kieran will be hosting their pasta dinner on Sunday April 29th from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM. The dinner will be held in the parish gym (Crawford Hall). Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds go to the church building fund. The second event is a Cinco de Mayo event at St. Agnes on Saturday May 5th. There will be dinner and music to celebrate our Mexican heritage. The event begins at 5:00 PM and ends at 10:00 PM and will be held in the Parish center on Halsted and 26th street. The tickets are $10 per person. This includes dinner and a soft drink. This fundraiser helps the St. Agnes Catholic School. What better ways to share with others then eating! Join us for these events. Finally, please join us next Sunday, April 22nd, to celebrate Fr. O’Mara’s 60th anniversary as a priest. Fr. Bill will celebrate all the masses next weekend, but after the 10:00 AM mass the Women’s Club will be hosting a reception for him in the vestibule. He is enjoying the parties and looks forward to time with his parish friends. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The God of our fathers has glorified his servant Jesus (Acts 3:13-15, 17-19). Parish News & Events

Parish Council Meeting Wednesday March 21, 2018 Present: Sue Habegger, Dave Nozar, Kevin Dennihan, Fr. John, Joe Sopron Not Present: Terry Shelley, Keith Betton Opening Prayer – Dave Nozar The meeting started with opening prayer. We discussed the fresh look to the Gathering space in the church Nartex. With the space looking inviting we would like to do more. We realize some parishioners view their time at church as a chance to share their week with friends they don’t get to see otherwise. We hope the new look does that. One of the suggestions is to change the look of the doors entering into the worship space. Perhaps Glass inserts or Glass doors to eliminate some of the feeling of being closed in. Another idea is to provide coffee or tea to encourage fellowship after the masses, nothing to take away from the coffee shop, no food would be served. Regarding the Strategic Plan: In our review of Liturgy, it was suggested the Mass intention should be announced at the begin-ning of Mass instead of waiting for the intersessions. So that worshipers are aware for the whole of the Mass. It was also suggested that Family members of those whom the Mass is being said, ask the Head Usher if they may have the privilege of bringing up the gifts. If Mass intentions were for more than one family then it would be given to the first to ask. It was suggested that the book of prayer intentions be brought to the front of the church at each Mass and included in the intersessions (…for those intentions included in the book of prayer in-tentions). After Mass it would be returned to the back of the church. It was recommended that a calendar, listing the parish activities for the coming month be posted in the bulletin possibly on the last Sunday of the Month for the coming month. The parish council members asked that our names be placed in the bulletin so that parishioners can approach us with questions and comments. The remainder of the Strategic plan be discussed at our next meeting. Dave Nozar reported on the proposal to update our Sign on Halsted. The plan is to remove and refurbish our existing sign, inserting a LED screen with color. The messages would be updated remotely. The sign will take about three months to complete. Dave negotiated favorable pricing with extended warranty. Next meeting April 25, 2018- Opening prayer by Kevin Dennihan Submitted by: Joe Sopron ---Future scheduled meeting dates: April 25 May 23 June 27

The St. Agnes/St. Kieran Religious Education year came to a close last Tuesday, March 27, but our year is far from over. The Sacrament of Confirmation will take place at St. Irenaeus Church in Park Forest on Monday, April 16, at 7:00 p.m. (Please note: this is a change of date from our original schedule). First Communion will be held at St. Agnes Church on Saturday, April 21. There are two masses for First Communion…check with your family member to see which mass your loved ones have chosen. Registration for 2018-2019 Religious Education classes is open. Registration forms have been sent home with current R.E. students, and are also available on the St. Kieran website, and in the R.E. Office at St. Agnes. Please complete the form and return it to the St. Agnes/St. Kieran Religious Education Office as soon as possible. Classes will be limited to fewer students next year, so get your registration in early to ensure your child’s/children’s place in our program. All current tuition and fees must be paid in full before your registration for 2018/2019 will be accepted.

The first ever women's Welcome weekend was held on March 10-11 and it was a huge success. It was vibrant and deeply spiritual. The women of St. Agnes and St. Kieran came together to grow in our under-standing of our Catholic faith both individually and as a community. We laughed, we listened. We cried, we comforted. No one left the same. Please pray for the continued success of the Welcome movement and consider being a part of the next exciting Welcome weekend!!
