Foreword: by M. Buggy

This old Parish Church (now in ruins) was formerly dedicated to St. Kieran of Saighir, patron of this

Diocese and later to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross by the Normans. Originally Catholic the Church had

four Priests at the time of the foundation of Kells Priory, these priests were the first occupants of the

newly erected Priory buildings before the arrival of the Canons Regular.

After the suppression of the Monasteries in Ireland, the Church fell into Protestant hands and continued

in use until 1850. It is now a roofless ruin. Richard Lahart in his history of Dunnamaggan (1956) says the

bell in the belfry was intact but now (1972) it has disappeared. The base of the old Market Cross of Kells

still remains in a field nearby.

A baptismal font, now in Inistioge Priory, which once belonged to the Church and dated 12th Century by

Rev. James Graves was found lying in the Rectory of Revd. Darby Vicar of Kells 1828-1874. The Darby

Coat of Arms with motto “Vicarius” is to be seen on the front of the house of Mr & Mrs Persse, Kells.

Many prominent families are interred here, inside and outside the Church - - - Prims, Shaws, Nowlans,

Cronyns (all related) Izods, Belchers, Archdekins, Kevans and Hutchinsons etc. The Graveyard is very

well kept and was a pleasure to record.

Note on Prim family and the connection with the Shaws and Nowlans by M. Buggy

The first member of the Prim family to settle in Kilkenny was an Abraham Prim in 1664 when he paid 2/=

hearth money for a house at Ballycommon, The Rower (Dr. F.R. Walsh). From there they seem to have

spread to Kilkenny City, Kells, Kilree, Gowran, Ballingarry, Johnswell, Annamult & Ennisnag. The name

Prim and all these placenames are to be seen on monuments in Kells Church Graveyard.

The Prims were connected by marriage to the Shaw, Nowlan, Cronyn, Nixon, Davis, Brennan and Perrys

all of whom are interred here. In 1810 two of these families, Nolans and Shaws, started a woollen mill

Page 2: St. Kieran s Cemetery, Kells - Kilkenny Archaeological Society

known as the Merino Factory, beside the Kings River on the lands of a Mr John Prim who had died some

time previously leaving as trustees of his will Timothy Nowlan (his brother-in-law) and Thomas Shaw (his

nephew). The factory prospered and gave good employment for about 12 years until 1822 when for

some unknown reason the firm went bankrupt.

The Nowlans and Shaws were closely related as both Timothy Nowlan and George Shaw married two

Prim sisters and Thomas Shaw Junior also married a cousin Elizabeth Prim.

The Shaws were of the same family as George Bernard Shaw. It is believed that Thomas Shaw Junior

was a Great Uncle and lived at Kilree House, Bennetsbridge.

The Nowlans continued to live at Ennisnag House until 1890. In 1824 (Pigots Directory) the Prims are

mentioned, a Mrs Prim of King Street is given amongst the Nobility & Gentry. A Thomas Prim was an

Apothecary in High Street and a John Prim is given as Distributer of stamps in William Street.

Egans Guide (1884) gives us Humphrey Prim Esq. Nore Cottage and Louis Prim, William Street. Now in

1972 there is a Henry D. Prim in Dean Street and Mrs K. Prim c/o Switzers Home.
