If one has only meager information on Tipasa, this is mainly that there archaeological research began only around 1895 - unfortunately too late to prevent much destruction and vandalism. In 1859, after an official document of four lime kilns were operating on the old city.

The first methodical excavations were made in 1891 by Stéphane Gsell and Abbot St.Gérand. They were interrupted rather abruptly with the death of the latter and it was only in 1913 that the Department of Historical Monuments began followed a more research on this site.

AD The city has flourished under the Numidian king Juba II and becomes Caesaria with (current Cherchell) a hotbed of Greco-Roman culture in North Africa.Under the Roman Emperor Claudius I, Tipasa gets a long wall of over 2 km. The archaeological site of Tipasa contains various relics, the remains of a basilica. However, the largest city of the wilaya is Bou Ismail. Populations inhabiting the mountains are Berber dialect Tachenouit said, and Cherchell and Tenes.

Tipasa became Roman in the Roman province of Mauretania caesarean, then Christian. The presence of the sea, terrain and desert Chenoua give a particular landscape and tourist interest. Many Punic, Roman, Christian and African attest to the rich history of this colony.
