6 // The Village Vatsounia

10 km from Mouzaki and 40 km from Karditsa are necessary to reach Vatsounia. Placed on an altitude of 430 m, sparsely populated and drowned in the forest of chestnut trees, fir trees and oak trees, Vatsounia belongs to the municipality of Mouzaki.

The main source of income of the residents comes from sheep goats and swine raising. About 5,000 sheep and swine are fed. The village has excellent drinking water, which according to chemical analyses of the General State Chemical Laboratory, is one of the best one can drink in Greece.

The history of the village, from antiquity until today, is incomplete not completely known. The village establishment is lost in the mists of time. Very close to the village, at “Paliokklisi” surrounding is placed the ancient kingdom of Seles. In modern times, testified that, around the year 1800, there were many battles in the area. At the end of the last century, the population of the town increased considerably, as moved in the area a group of people from the Epirus’ villages of Konitsa.

NATURAL MINERAL WATERHas exclusively underground origin (drills or most rarely springs) and Community Directives

prohibit any treatment or disinfection in natural mineral water. Its composition may contain

various of metals and trace elements such as magnesium, calcium, potassium etc.

THEONI is a Natural Mineral Water that comes from the earthly sprouted (artesian water)

springs of Goura at an altitude of over 1000 meters “from the spring to you”.

Maybe of any origin (eg drill, lake, river, even desalinated sea water). The table water can

decontaminate, in order the recommendation to be consistent with the corresponding EU

directive from drinking water, and lacks of metal elements, for example magnesium, calcium

etc.

The spring water is an intermediate category between the table and natural mineral water.

It is close to natural mineral water in that it certainly has underground source and any

treatment is prohibited.

However, the composition does not follows that of the natural mineral water, but that of

table water, it lacks metal elements as well.

Greek bottled waters are either natural mineral or table waters.

The european union has identified three different types of

bottled water.

The bottled water “THEONI”

is real spring water from the

naturally sprouting springs of

Goura, at an altitude of over

one thousand meters. These

springs are located in the

forest “Vatsounia” of Mouzaki

Municipality of Karditsa. The

springs in this region are part of

Penios river water basin. Basic

topographical data describing

the terrain of the springs is in the

elevation changes, the various

slopes and creases.

The area of the springs for the

“THEONI” water is in the western

fringes of the “Itamos” mountain

and the southern outskirts of

the “Koziaka” mountain, which

are part of the Agrafa mountain

range.

The earthly sprouted (artesian

water) springs of Goura at an

altitude of over 1000 meters are

also providing the drinking water

of the residents of Vatsounia. The

water source of Goura springs

from their underground reservoirs

never ends and a part of this is

bottled by AHB Group SA, under

the name “THEONI”.

“Theoni” is, as it became known

from the memories of the elders

in the area, the name of the

spring fairy in the region
