2014 CHURCH THEME
“Meeting The Challenges With
Spiritual Wisdom”
Matthew 10:16-26
While the mission of the local church is to preach the Word
and produce disciples, the church must disciple Christians in
such a way that they live justly and integrate their faith with
their work. So the church doesn't directly change culture, but
it disciples and supports people who do.
The local Church must be willing to partner with society's
cultural institutions. Rather than taking them over, or
avoiding them as a corrupting influence, or treating them
with indifference, we should be a faithful presence within
them.
The local Church must be sure the proclamation of the gospel
does not get lost in the demonstration of the gospel. Deeds
matter, Christians should (and must) care for the hurting, and
many Churches have lacked that engagement. Many times we
are so focused on "Church work" that we forget the "work of
the Church."
Upon those principles, gospel loving Christians can unite and
work for the advance of God's mission, even if doctrinal
differences exist.
Finally, we can unite because all agree with the Master's
command in the following verses:
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have
commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the
end of the world. Amen" (Matthew 28:19-20 KJV).

O. Wendell Davis

This week many of our children will begin their
2014-2015 Academic School Year. I am
challenging parents and guardians of those with
students to do the following things to aid our
children in academic success:
(1) Make sure that your child get sufficient rest
to ensure they are well rested for the following
school day.
(2) Pray for and with your children each
morning before they head out for school.
(3) Start their day with a hearty breakfast.
(4) Give your children quality time (provide
undivided attention for the first 30-60 minutes
after they are picked up from school/
childcare).
Union Chapel was organized on October 4, 1933 in the home of O.D. & Lucy Boone located on Blue Springs Road.
They selected the name “Union Chapel” due to the “unity” exemplified by the members.
Being ever mindful of the need to religiously educate our children, Pastor Boone established a full-time kindergarten with certified teaching staff.

HISTORY
(5) Review their homework assignments, ask
about their day and encourage them read to at
least 15-20 minutes daily.
(6) Limit the amount of time they spend with
electronics during the school week (ex: TVs,
cellphones, video games, computer, etc.).
(7) Monitor the television shows for
appropriateness.
(8) Speak LIFE into their lives (daily tell them
that you love them and always tell them that
they will be do something GREAT)!
(9) Encourage accountability (teach them God's
principles and explain the consequences of
disobedience).
(10) And finally, be an example (be mindful of
what you say and do around very impressionable
minds. Practice the things that you are asking of
them).
I am challenging parents and guardians to try this
for at least 30 days. These simple investments
will yield great results. If you are not a parent,
we simply ask that you pray for all parents.
"Invest now with your time and money or pay
later with heartache, disappointments and
tears.”
Blessings,
Sis. Janet Dickerson

Often when we talk about living
as a missionary, debate arises
about whether we are to
minister locally or go globally.
The phrase glocal
Christians means we’re to be
both local and global in our
mission. Jesus lays down a
challenge that isn’t either/or
but both/and.
Being glocal involves being aware of your surrounding
community as well as your larger world, and then
entering into it with the love of Jesus. God is already at
work out there. Our job is simply to have our eyes open
to see him and join in that labor.
As we decide what part in God’s story you’re being asked
to play, don’t fall into the debate about whether it’s in
local ministry or global ministry. Be radical followers of
Jesus in both.
‘Glocal’ Christians
The Mission of The Church ( An excerpt from “Church and Ministry” by
O. Wendell Davis)
Jesus came into this world to redeem humankind. He revealed God to People and His
purpose was to set people free from sin. The mission of the Church is to carry on the life and
to present the redemptive message of Jesus Christ. Christ himself committed this
responsibility to the Church. “
The Youth Ministry is encouraging children, collegiate age, and young adults to participate in our weekly Bible Study Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. Youth classes for children and youth ages 3 to 18 are held in the church basement. Collegiate age/young adult class ages 18 to 30 are held in the former Library. If you need additional information, please see Min. Marquis Thompson or Sis. Doris Ford.

Loyace F. and Ester Copeland Lacy accepted the call to serve as the second Pastor of Union Chapel in April 1958.
On August 3, 1968 ground-breaking ceremony was held on the property purchased from the family of Orange Hayden in “Spragins Hollow”/100 Orange Drive to build a new Sanctuary.
Rev. Lacy saw the vision and need to better serve the community and a new educational complex was erected on April 11, 1982.

The Millennial service offers contemporary prayer, praise, worship and fellowship to young adults between the ages of 16 through 30. There continues to be one simple goal that this effort hopes to accomplish; to encourage young adults to continue attending church and to evangelize to inactive members to come back to church regularly.

O. Wendell and Dora Davis accepted the call to serve and he was installed as the third Pastor of Union Chapel on September 17, 1989.
Due to tremendous growth, services were moved from the main Sanctuary to the newly expanded Educational Complex (Gym/Multi-purpose room) in 1995.
April 14, 1993, Church acquired one-hundred fifty (150) acres of land on Winchester Road from the family of Frank Ellis Strong, a former slave.
December 1998, the Union Chapel Institute of Biblical Studies was founded by Pastor Davis as a vision to train men and women for the work of the church.

In words attributed to Mother Teresa, “Many
people mistake our work for our vocation.
Our vocation is the love of Jesus.” As we
celebrate Labor Day, what does such a
distinction mean?
Vocation comes from Latin for
“calling.” Christians understand
vocation as that for which God created
you, involving activities you do well,
enjoy and feel good about doing, and
that serve others. If you’re blessed to
earn a paycheck doing something that
fits those categories, then your
profession or occupation — your work —likely
is your vocation.
Other people work a paying job because an
opportunity presents itself and the income is
needed, even if it isn’t their favorite thing to
do. Perhaps they live out their truest vocation
during non-employment hours: singing with a
choir, raising children, building houses with
Habitat for Humanity.
Christians in any capacity, paid or not, can live
out Jesus’ calling to love God and neighbor with
our whole being (Luke 10:27). When God is
“CEO” of our lives, it shows in how we treat our
fellow laborers.
