Words From The Pastor

“The Connection Between Joy And Resolve”

Brothers and Sisters, since our focus this month is the "Joy" of the Lord. I would like to share with you something that has been extremely helpful to me on my spiritual journey. I call it my "morning resolve." After prayer and meditation, I make my resolve each

morning and it covers everything I might encounter that day, good or bad. I suggest that you try it and see if it will be of benefit to you as well.

Morning Resolve I will live a simple, sincere,

and serene life.

I will dismiss every thought of impurity, discontent, anxiety, fear, and discouragement.

I will cultivate health, joy, caring, sharing, love, and brotherhood.

I will be a good steward in all things, and be careful in conversation and appointments.

“May the God of hope fill you with all

joy and peace as you trust in him, So that you may overflow with hope by the

power of the holy spirit.”

Romans 15:13

I will trust God and continue in prayer, study, and work.

I will eat only healthy foods and get sufficient sleep each night.

I will make every effort to improve myself spiritually, physically, and mentally everyday.

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." In Jesus name! Amen.

"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth" (3 John 1:2 KJV).

Your Servant Leader,

O. Wendell Davis

Presidential Inauguration 2013

Tutorial Program Schedule

On January 18, 2013, many of our church members journeyed to attend the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. What an exciting time it must have been to witness the second inauguration of President Obama. January 21, 2013 also was a significant day as we honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Youth On The Move 4 Christ

We Have Joy in Our Hearts for Our Ancestors

George Washington Carver (1860-1943) - was an American botanist, educator and inventor. He is best known for developing as many uses for peanuts such as peanut butter.

Madame C.J. Walker (1867-1919) - was the first African-American to develop beauty and hair products for black women. She was also the first self made female millionaire of North America.

Harriet Tubman (1820-1913) - earned the name Moses, as she helped hundreds of slaves escape to the northern United States and Canada through the Underground Railroad.

Mary Ann Shadd (1823-1893) - was the first black female lawyer in the United States as well as the first black woman publisher in North America. Later in life, she founded the first integrated school in Canada.

Jesse Owens (1913-1980) - was the first American to have won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin. He was subjected to racism all through his

college life but he still stood strong and accomplished many goals in his track and field career.

Rosa Parks (1913-2005) - was one of the most famous women in American history. She stood for her rights and refused to give her seat up on a city bus to a white man. This bold act of defiance began the Montgomery Bus Boycott of the Civil Rights Movement.

Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) - was the first black Major League Baseball player. He was instrumental in ending racial segregation in professional baseball. Jackie Robinson was awarded rookie of the year in his second season and also became the first African-American to win the National League Most Valuable Player Award.

Sidney Poitier (1924) - was the first African-American to win an Academy Award for the Best Actor in 1963 for his role in Lilies of the Field.

Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) - One of the most influential personalities who rigidly practiced the teachings of

Mahatma Gandhi. As the leader of the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr. led anti-violence demonstrations against racial discrimination, one of which was the March on Washington.

As we celebrate black history month, we ought to have joy in our hearts for the contributions that many African Americans before us made. In addition, we ought to take time to learn about our history and be proud of the accomplishments of so many of our brothers and sisters.

We must continue to keep God first in our lives and never lose focus of the vision He has given us. We should never forget those who came before us and the struggles that they endured so we can enjoy the freedom and privileges that we have today.

Classes are available for all age groups from Pre-school through collegiate/young adults.

Saturday Morning Christ Connection will meet Saturday February 9 and March 9 at 11:00 a.m. To learn more about bible study classes, visit us online at www.unionchapel-hsv.org/youth.

Upcoming Events at UCCA

Friday, January 4, 2013 marked our 100th day of school. We started our count on the tenth day (Friday, August 17, 2012). We met Zero the Hero. Zero was all alone in the land of digitaria. He didn’t play addemup with the other numbers, because he had nothing to add. We also learned that Zero became most helpful and a hero.

On the 50th day of school, our toddler two’s presented different items that counted up to 50. Our three and four year olds presented items that counted up to 100 on our 100th day of school. They celebrated their work by eating donuts. For our parents we had a table with 100 lost and found items for them to claim. We were happy for our parents’ participation too! Counting our days to 100 was very exciting!
