At Roland, we believe technology shouldinspire creativity rather than slow it down. That’s why the 76-noteFantom workstation gives you more than just incredible XV-5080sounds and effects, but an entirely new way of making music viaits variable Arpeggiator and Rhythm Generator functions. Usethem to spark ideas, manipulating patterns in real time withFantom’s knobs. Then record your music without missing a beat (Fantom’s sequencer is always active). We call it “merging composition and performance,” but you’ll call it simply amazing.

Music First.

■ Infinitely Expandable

With room for over 200MB of sounds, you canexpand the Fantom’s already massive internal wave memory by choosing from one of the largest sound libraries available (currently there are over 20compatible expansion boards, withmore under development). And unlike a sampler, these sounds can beaccessed instantly. In all, the Fantomcan be expanded with up to twoSRX-Series 64MB Wave ExpansionBoards, plusan additional SR-JV80-Seriesboard—givingyou the perfectbalancebetween quality-focused andgenre-specificsounds.

■ Pristine, 24-bit Sound

With so many high-quality sounds and effects onboard, the Fantomdeserves nothing less than the finest24-bit D/A converters. So even if youroutput destination is analog, you canbe assured that the Fantom’s fulldynamic range will shine through. And for those who prefer to work in an all-digital environment, the Fantomcomes equipped with a stereo S/P DIF digital output, making it easy tointegrate this stellar workstation withdigital mixers, computers, samplersand other digital gear.

■ Step Into the Comfort Zone

If a workstation keyboard is truly to become the centerpiece of your studio or live rig, it should be comfortable to play and easy to edit. To this end, theFantom delivers on several levels, beginning with its76-note synth-weighted keyboard. These first-classkeys give players just the right amount of resistance, along with channel aftertouch to take full advantage of

the modulation capabilities within the Patches. Realtimecontrollers include Roland’s classic pitchbend/modulation lever—a favorite among players—plus fourassignable knobs and the light-sensing D-Beam controller. And withFantom’s large, angled LCD, it’seasy to navigate allthe features offeredby this powerfulworkstation.

■ Advanced Arpeggiator and Rhythm Generator

Once you’ve found the right sound, Fantom’s interactive tools keep your creative juices flowing—whether in Patch or Performance mode. Start byselecting an Arpeggiator style from guitar strumming tobass lines and chord comping, using the knobs and D-Beam to vary the patterns as you play. Then addsome drums with Fantom’s unique Rhythm Generator, which lets you trigger pre-recorded drum patterns on aspecially mapped one-octave key range. These inspiring patterns—recorded by live session musicians

using V-Drums® and GR-Series Guitar Synthesizers—are so musical and useful, you might turn them rightinto a song. (And just imagine what happens whenyou combine Arpeggiator and Rhythm Generator patterns with your own playing!)

■ Sequencing “On Demand”

Unlike other workstations, the Fantom’s pro-qualitysequencer is designed to be active regardless ofwhat keyboard mode is selected. So whether playing

a Patch or Performance, your ideascan be captured without stoppingthe music—be it live playing, knobtweaks or Arpeggiator patterns. What’s more, the Fantom’s high-resolution sequencer also includespowerful Realtime PhraseSequencing (RPS) for triggeringcomplete musical phrases and MIDImessages on the fly. This Roland-exclusive feature is particularlyuseful when performing live.

■ Create a MultitimbralMasterpiece!

The Fantom’s redesignedMultitimbral mode makes setting up16-part MIDI sequences as easy asusing software. Just scroll througheach of the 16 parts, select thePatch you want and you’re done. You can also edit individual partparameters from the same screen—including graphic adjustment of volume, pan, output assignment, chorus and reverb levels. Want tolayer a sound? Just assign two partsto the same MIDI channel. It reallydoesn’t get any easier than this!

■ Simplified Editing

Editing sequences is now moreintuitive than ever, thanks to theFantom’s oversized LCD. This large, angled display makes it easy toview and edit track data withunparalleled precision when using

Microscope editing. Now you can perfect yourarrangements with minimal hassle in an easy-to-understand environment designed to keep themusic flowing.

■ Designed for Musicians

With Fantom’s sleek titanium styling and musician-friendly interface, we almost hate calling it a workstation. Because work is the last thing you’llthink about when using this intuitive, yet powerful keyboard. So instead of a front panel full of buttonsand clutter, you’ll find a clean, spacious layout centered around a large LCD display with soft keynavigation. This makes accessing the Fantom’sparameters and special functions more fluid thanever. For example, assigning a parameter to one ofthe Fantom’s controllers is as simple as pressing theJump key and touching the corresponding controller.

■ What’s Your Favorite Sound?

With so many great Patches, you’re sure to comeacross a few that you’ll want to use on a regularbasis. Maybe it’s a rock piano, some lush strings, or akiller synth lead. With the Fantom’s Favorite Soundfunction, you don’t have to hunt for these Patchesevery time you need them; just use the Favorite Soundbuttons under the display to recall them instantly. Thisfunction can be also used to reset a sound after heavymodification with the realtime controllers. Put simply, the Fantom is one of the most logical and musical keyboards around. And isn’t that what’s important?

A New Concept in Workstation KeyboardsInspiration is what the Fantom is all about—from its fresh XV-5080 sounds and effects to itsArpeggiator and Rhythm Generator functions. Add to this a host of realtime controllers and intuitive sequencing, and it’s easy to see why the Fantom is in a class all its own.

● Matrix Control System

■ Powerful XV-5080 Synthesis

The XV-5080 has been heralded as Roland’s mostpowerful synthesizer ever, and that’s saying a lot. With up to four stereo multiplex Tones per Patch, you won’t find more spacious, natural-sounding presets in any other instrument… except theFantom, which gives you the same XV-5080 wavememory, four stereo tone architecture and powerfulMatrix Control to create the most expressive andmusical sounds possible.
