CD11 ORFF O Fortuna from Carmina burana
Stravinsky described it as neo-Neanderthalmusic, but this was a backhanded tribute toCarl Orffs success in writing perhaps themost popular choral-orchestral work of the20th century. Using the rediscoveredmedieval songs and poems from themonastery at Beuron in Bavaria (hence thetitle Carmina burana, Songs of Beuron), Orffin 1937 brought out a work combining dance, mime and singing with a simple orchestralaccompaniment dominated by pianos andpercussion. The works opening and closingchorus is an invocation to the goddessFortune, with her constant changeability, symbolised by the wheel of fortune.
2 VIVALDI Gloria in excelsis Deofrom Gloria in D major Antonio Vivaldi was a violin-playing priestwho spent much of his career teaching thegirls and directing their music at anorphanage in Venice, the Ospedale dellaPiet. He also wrote over 500 concertos forall kinds of solo instruments but especiallyfor the violin, including the famous FourSeasons. His church music has the samebrilliant effects, based on springing, energeticmusical patterns; the opening movement ofhis Gloria, with its leaping strings and skirlingtrumpet, is full of vitality, a fitting setting
of the exultant text, Glory to God in the highest.
3 HANDEL Zadok the PriestMozart once said, When Handel chooses,he strikes like a thunderbolt. Of nothing isthis so true as of the anthem Zadok thePriest, composed for the coronation of KingGeorge II in 1727, and sung in WestminsterAbbey at every coronation since. It beginswith an extraordinary 22 bars of arpeggios:slow chords spread out into a constant flowof running semiquavers, the harmonictension building inexorably to a staggeringclimax as the choir bursts in with its openingacclamation, a rich seven-part choral textureaccompanied by trumpets and drums. Thecentral section, And all the people rejoiced,is a stately dance in triple time, and theanthem finishes with triumphant shouts ofAmen! Alleluia!. The text is a paraphrase ofthe Old Testament account of KingSolomons coronation: highly flattering to thenew king, as Solomon was famous for hiswisdom, and reigned over a pros
