NORTH CAROLINA
DISTRICT DIRECTORS

Greetings From Your Chapter Directors
Tom & Colleen FitzGerald
GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”
The officers of Chapter A participated in the final district opera-tions meeting conducted by Roy & Cindy Bryant. I personally thanked Roy & Cindy for rescuing the North Carolina District at a time of great need. National and Region, at that time, were thinking about consolidating North
Carolina and Virginia into one new District. Thankfully Roy & Cindy took on the role and have done an excellent job. As the ADD’s in the East said at the conclusion of the meeting “We’ve never been around an individual who so calmly and professionally listens to an issue, thinks about it, and then comes up with a solution.” I couldn’t agree more. From the potential disaster in Cherokee when the district had to get tents to hold the District Rally to the move to Fletcher, Roy & Cindy have set a standard for how to lead. They don’t micromanage their team and the volunteer leaders on the District Team have responded accordingly. The officers, staff, and members of NC-A thank you for your service!
Thanks to the members, staff, and officers of the Piedmont Goldwings our chapter was named North Carolina District Chapter of the Year and the 2018 Central Travelers Plaque was retired with Chapter A. We’ll show both plaques at our chapter operations meeting and our February gathering. Speak-ing of our gathering, it’s on Valentine’s Day this year and we’ll have a little something sweet for everyone.
The chapter annual planning session is scheduled for Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 9:00 AM at our home located at 142 Croyden Dr. in Kernersville, NC. We encourage members to attend as we have some important things to discuss with the members following the chapter staff and district operations meetings. Your input is valued as it’s your chapter. Anyone who hasn’t replied to my email invitation can still do so until Thursday, February 7, 2019.
I was pleased to go on a 240 mile ride with fellow members Paula Hines, Mark Nadel, and Jeff Roth earlier this month. What a pleasure to be back on the bike again without pain in my left wrist. As the district team encouraged last Saturday, let’s all ride more in 2019!

January teased us with some really nice warm weather, great for riding – for a few days. We’ve had some really cold and nasty weather, and it looks like we’re going to have an artic blast to
end January. Please, February, be nicer to us, most of us are suffering from PMS! (FYI, that’s Parked Motorcy-cle Syndrome.)
At our District Officer’s Conference, we learned a lot about what everyone has planned for this year, with many opportunities for us to ride and enjoy activities – believe we’re going to have a great year. We also got some awards – more from Tom on those! In the Ride Coordinator’s meeting, we talked about techniques to help us improve our riding, maintain our attitude and attention to safety, and have more fun. There’s a strong sense of pride and accomplishment when we ride together, have a good time, and arrive home safely. One of the many great things about GWRRA that draws riders to us is that we are focused on fun, safety and knowledge.
Tom will be holding a Road Captains Course soon; I will be taking it and recommend that you take it too if you are able. When everyone in the group knows our riding procedures, knows what to expect, and how to handle riding situations in a group, everyone is safer, more comfortable, and can enjoy the ride more. The more you know, the better it gets!
We’re still actively promoting the Rider Education Levels program, and remind you that classes you take will help you maintain your current level, and advance to higher levels. When you take a class, complete the N-7 form and submit it to me or Tom, and we will send it to the District Rider Educator to input that information in our data base. You can access the data base to see what classes you may need to update and keep your knowledge and skills sharp and up-to-date.
Tony Prewitt, District Rider Educator, plans to hold an ARC (Advanced Rider Course) in Fayetteville soon. Lin-da Hojnacki, Medic First Aid Coordinator is now on the National Staff, but will still be working with her trainers to provide First Aid and CPR classes at a reasonable cost. Keep current, maintain a good, up-to-date first aid kit, and be prepared to help – you may be a life-saver!
There is also a class I’d like to take on Accident Scene Management – there is so much going on at an acci-dent, and it is so important to maintain your safety, the safety of people involved in the accident, and managing traffic as well – all difficult to do in the pressure of the moment, with adrenalin pumping. Calm control and an organized approach can make a difficult situation easier to handle.
We’ve got the C2 Chili Cook-off coming up February 16th at the Smithfield Lodge, address in Selma – hoping for good riding weather! And March 16th, H2 is holding their annual swap meet at the Mebane Arts Center. You never know what you’ll find for sale there. I’m going 2 wheels or 4! Also, if you need the Co-Rider Course, you can take it there that morning.
Between snow and ice, we’re still working up Impromptu Ride Program activities – watch for emails, if we get a weather break, we’ll jump on it!
Friends for fun, safety and knowledge! Watch for impromptu ride notifications - and see you at our gathering!
Ride safe, ride often,
Paula, Ride Coordinator
