Outline
7th CCI Collocation Meeting, 04-06 October 2016, ESA-ESRIN
Context: response to a need
} WGClimate: “The Joint CEOS/CGMS Working Group on Climate is the body of major space agencies responsible for guiding the implementation of the architecture for space-based climate monitoring in response to Global Climate Observing System (GCOS).”
} ECV Inventory: “In response to the climate monitoring needs as formulated by GCOS the goal of WGClimate is to improve the systematic availability of Climate Data Records [CDRs] through the coordinated implementation, and further development of the architecture for climate monitoring from space.”
7th CCI Collocation Meeting, 04-06 October 2016, ESA-ESRIN
Context: Development cycles and schedule
} 2-years Terms / ECV Inventory Development Cycles: } Cycle #1 (2013 - 11.2015) (NOAA, ESA) } Cycle #2 (11.2015 – 11.2017) (ESA, EUMETSAT) } Cycle #3 (11.2017 – 11.2019) (EUMETSAT, TBD (CEOS-Agency))
¨ 4-years ESA/EUMETSAT coordinated work plan for Cycles #2 and #3 (2015 - 2019)
} ECV Inventory Development Cycle: } ECV Inventory - data collection and verification, publication of
preliminary version } Gap Analysis - identification of gaps and opportunities } Coordinated Action Plan and publication of results - recommendations to
agencies, possible input to GCOS, publication of final version of ECV Inventory
7th CCI Collocation Meeting, 04-06 October 2016, ESA-ESRIN
April - May June - October August - November
Preparation
• Contact with Agencies
• Engagement of WGClimate members / ‘Focal Points’
• Identification of ‘Responders’
Collection
• ‘Responders’ given access credentials to web interface
• Input of information by ‘Responders’ into ECV Inventory
• Supervision / coordination by ‘Focal Points’, assistance by ‘Support’
Verification
• Pre-check of contents by ‘Support’
• ‘pre-scheduled’1-to-1 verification meetings between ‘Support’ and ‘Responders’
• Acceptance of entry into preliminary ECV Inventory #2
Aims
} Capture the largest possible number of quality controlled current* and future** CDRs responding to requirements for GCOS ECVs } WGClimate members à Focal Points (Agency), Responders
* current: already produced, based on past/present missions ** future: planned and committed, but not yet produced, based on past/present/future missions
} Get the most accurate information concerning the data records } Questionnaire + Guide: answers = fields of Inventory
} Ensure completeness and consistency of information provided } Individual support to Responders + 1-to-1 verification check
ECV Inventory: thorough and reliable source of information Gap analysis process and coordinated action plan (WGClimate) Agencies (directly and through WGClimate feedback) Users (effective and potential)
