As Christian pilgrims we want, of course, to learn something of the history of our land. It was the eighteenth century essayist Edmund Burke (1729-1797) who said, “Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it.” A hard-pressed twenty first century church tends always to temporal amnesia, forgetting that for all the challenges of our day, those in past generations actually had much greater challenges with which to struggle – and that those struggles have a lot to teach us. But our visits and pilgrimages are more than exercised in history and archaism. It is too easy to think of such trips as ‘jollies’ or merely as nice days out with a good lunch. They are, in fact, an exercise in weaving community and connection – and of being reminded of God’s constancy, even to us in our fragmented and isolated times. At their end we know one another better; we have shared our stories – and at their heart, always, is the Eucharist – and the life of Jesus Christ connecting us with each other and with all those good and faithful Christian souls who have gone before. Perhaps next time you’ll join us? Fr Alan Gyle Rycote Ascension Day Mass & Party On Ascension Day, Thursday 10th May at 7pm there will be an evening mass followed by a party in the Vicarage to which all are warmly invited. If you are a new member of the congregation, or a visitor, it is a good opportunity to meet other members of the congregation. Please ‘save the date’. Yesterday’s parish trip into rural Oxfordshire was an invitation to reconnect with a turbulent world of Christian discord – and to notice the challenges of the present too. The fortunes of the Manor of Rycote, near Thame in Oxfordshire, have been mixed since it was first built in the late 1400s. Burned down in the 18 th century, the present House dates from the early 20 th century, but is on the same spot as what became one of the grandest Tudor Manor houses on the outskirts of London. Rycote was a place where travellers, among them many Kings and Queens, stopped for welcome repite on the road to or from Oxford. Its lovely chapel – built in the fifteenth century – has fared rather better over the centuries. But its relatively untouched perpendicular gothic interior and fine wooden vaulted ceiling contain some particularly fine sixteenth and seventeenth century additions – including The Norris pew on the north side of the chancel, covered by a musicians' gallery (c.1610) and a domed pew on the south side of the chancel which is believed to have been installed for the visit of Charles I in 1625. The chapel therefore evokes strongly memories of first the Reformation and later of the English Civil War – that most turbulent period for religion in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The history was brought alive by one of our party, Stephen Hicks, who outlined the lives and fates of several generations of those who prayed and worshipped there.
