Afterwards,ourpartyof24droveashortdistancetoanotherlovely,albeitmuchsimpler,GeorgianchapelatWheatfield–againtheManorHouselongdestroyed,theChapelremainsashortdistancefromtheStableBlockwhere,atlength(andafteraEucharist)weenjoyedlunchandgoodconversationtogetherastheguestsofJossandFionaWilbraham.AsChristianpilgrimswewant,ofcourse,tolearnsomethingofthehistoryofourland.ItwastheeighteenthcenturyessayistEdmundBurke(1729-1797)whosaid,“Thosewhodon'tknowhistoryaredestinedtorepeatit.”Ahard-pressedtwentyfirstcenturychurchtendsalwaystotemporalamnesia,forgettingthatforallthechallengesofourday,thoseinpastgenerationsactuallyhadmuchgreaterchallengeswithwhichtostruggle–andthatthosestruggleshavealottoteachus.Butourvisitsandpilgrimagesaremorethanexercisedinhistoryandarchaism.Itistooeasytothinkofsuchtripsas‘jollies’ormerelyasnicedaysoutwithagoodlunch.Theyare,infact,anexerciseinweavingcommunityandconnection–andofbeingremindedofGod’sconstancy,eventousinourfragmentedandisolatedtimes.Attheirendweknowoneanotherbetter;wehavesharedourstories–andattheirheart,always,istheEucharist–andthelifeofJesusChristconnectinguswitheachotherandwithallthosegoodandfaithfulChristiansoulswhohavegonebefore.

Yesterday’sparishtripintoruralOxfordshirewasaninvitationtoreconnectwithaturbulentworldofChristiandiscord–andtonoticethechallengesofthepresenttoo.ThefortunesoftheManorofRycote,nearThameinOxfordshire,havebeenmixedsinceitwasfirstbuiltinthelate1400s.Burneddowninthe18thcentury,thepresentHousedatesfromtheearly20thcentury,butisonthesamespotaswhatbecameoneofthegrandestTudorManorhousesontheoutskirtsofLondon.Rycotewasaplacewheretravellers,amongthemmanyKingsandQueens,stoppedforwelcomerepiteontheroadtoorfromOxford.

Itslovelychapel–builtinthefifteenthcentury–hasfaredratherbetteroverthecenturies.Butitsrelativelyuntouchedperpendiculargothicinteriorandfinewoodenvaultedceilingcontainsomeparticularlyfinesixteenthandseventeenthcenturyadditions–includingTheNorrispewonthenorthsideofthechancel,coveredbyamusicians'gallery(c.1610)andadomedpewonthesouthsideofthechancelwhichisbelievedtohavebeeninstalledforthevisitofCharlesIin1625.ThechapelthereforeevokesstronglymemoriesoffirsttheReformationandlateroftheEnglishCivilWar–thatmostturbulentperiodforreligioninEnglandinthesixteenthandseventeenthcenturies.Thehistorywasbroughtalivebyoneofourparty,StephenHicks,whooutlinedthelivesandfatesofseveralgenerationsofthosewhoprayedandworshippedthere.

SarahMullallyistheBishopofLondon.Installedon12MayinStPaul’sCathedral,shewaspreviouslyBishopofCrediton,hasworkedatSalisburyCathedralandbeenaparishpriest,andbeforehadacareerasanurse,specialisingincancercare.HerverysuccessfulcareerintheNHSculminatedinherappointmentasthegovernment’sChiefNursingOfficerforEnglandattheageof37,andshewasmadeaDameCommanderoftheBritishEmpirein2005inrecognitionofheroutstandingcontributiontonursingandmidwifery.

DavidIsonistheDeanofStPaul’sCathedral.PreviouslyDeanofBradfordinYorkshire,hebeganasaninnercitypriestinDeptford,taughtatatrainingcollegeinBlackheath,workedonahousingestateinCoventryandwithinservicetrainingofclergyinDevon,andhasaPhDinEarlyChurchHistory.
