THEBEGINNING
OFEVERYTHING
Everyonerecognizes thetruth of good
proverbs, and sothey endure from
generation togeneration. TheRussians have asurprisingly boldone that fits thisSunday's Gospel:
"Bread is thebeginning of
everything." Judging from the first reading, Elijah mighthave felt that it was too late for bread--too late for lifeitself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope andendurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One
offers food and drink. The other gives startlingdirections. For Elijah, this food from the angels is breadfor his journey. On the strength of the heaven-sent gift of
food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today'sGospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the
journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh aslife for the world. "I am the bread of life" (John 6:48).
He is the beginning of everything.

Saint of the Week
St. Maximilian Kolbe
His name wasn’t always Maximilian. He was born the second of three sons to a poor but piousCatholic family in Russian occupied Poland and given the name Raymond.Raymond was known as a mischievous child, sometimes considered wild, and a trial to his parents. However, in 1906, at age twelve and around the time of his first Communion he received a vision of theVirgin Mary that changed his life.
“I asked the Mother of God what was to become of me. Then she came to me holding two crowns, onewhite, the other red. She asked if I was willing to accept either of these crowns. The white one meantthat I should persevere in purity and the red that I should become a martyr. I said that I would acceptthem both.” –Saint Maximilian
He entered the Franciscan junior seminary in Lwow, Poland in 1907 where he excelledin mathematics and physics. For a while he wanted to abandon the priesthood for the military, buteventually relented to the call to religious life. He took the name Maximilian, made his first vows onSeptember 5, 1911, his final vows on November 1, 1914.
Maximilian went to Japan where he built a monastery and then on to India. In 1936 he returned home because of ill health. After the Nazi invasion in 1939, he was imprisoned andreleased for a time. But in 1941 he was arrested again and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz.
On July 31, 1941, in reprisal for one prisoner's escape, ten men were chosen to die. Maximilianvolunteered to take the place a one man who was a husband and father, and Maximilian died as he hadalways wished – in service.
Motto for us this week: SEEK TRUTH AND SERVE IT!
