Watts Street on Mission 2017! Thanks to everyone who participated in the May 20 inter-generational, congregation-wide, hands-on day of service. The day found us cleaning a section of Ellerbe Creek, building a handicap ramp, packing donations for the Diaper Bank, moving furniture and organizing for Families Moving Forward, preparing sandwiches for Meals on Wheels, singing with homebound friends, creating a liturgical banner for the Prison Ministry, making candles with Reality Ministries, assembling “Blast Off to Kindergarten” kits for Durham Public Schools children, stocking “blessing bags” for people who are homeless, sending greetings to our sister church in El Salvador, making cards for homebound friends, and tying baby blankets. Special thanks to our Support Team of Ginny Wiggins, June Perry, Stella Smith, and Sue Kinzer for providing breakfast and lunch for all the volunteers. It was a great day to use our many gifts to serve God and neighbor!

June Missions Baskets Books on Break collects books for George Watts Montessori Elementary students to read during the summer. Donate new or gently used paperback books, English or Spanish, for students in grades 1 – 5. Mission Baskets are in the side foyer and fellowship hall.

Out and About On June 3, Diane Eubanks Hill will host our gathering of Watts Street's LGBTQ members and their friends at her home, 6:30 p.m. All are welcome! Bring food and drink to share. Questions? Call Gordon Whitaker (919-918-3658).

Eat Dessert First – Pentecost, June 4! Three Eat Dessert First events are planned in the next few months following Sunday worship. Enjoy cookies and lemonade, along with time for conversation. Make connections with new folks and strengthen existing friendships. Thanks to our deacons for sponsoring these events. The first event is on Pentecost, June 4. The other dates chosen for these events are July 9 and August 27. On July 9 Emily McCoy serves as coordinator and is assisted by the Deacons and the Senior Adult Coordinating Council as we celebrate our Watts Street nonagenerians! See article below.

Celebrate our Nonagenerians! Watts Street is grateful for the long and rich lives of our senior adults, many of whom continue to be active in the life of our congregation. On Sunday, July 9 we’ll gather after worship in the fellowship hall to celebrate the lives of all who are now nonagenerians! Although this event is also the second Eat Dessert First, a light

lunch, consisting of a variety of finger foods, will be served. Thanks to Emily McCoy for coordinating this event, and to the Senior Adult Coordinating Council and Deacons for assisting. Mark your calendars and plan to celebrate our members who have reached and exceeded the age of ninety!

June 11 Minute for Mission Urban Hope is our May Minute for Mission. Urban Hope provides opportunities to the youth of the Walltown neighborhood, with a goal of “bringing hope to a generation of young people that many have given up on.” WSBC has been particularly helpful with the summer camp program. Urban Hope Summer Camp is a safe place where youth establish new and deeper relationships with peers and adults, gain valuable knowledge and skills relevant to their lives, and learn how to make meaningful contributions to their community. Learn more about Urban Hope at urbanhope.us.

Summer Special Music!

If you sing, play the piano or other instrument and would like to share your talent with us this summer, please consider signing up for special music. The dates run from June 25 to August 10. We can accommodate two pieces each service. There is a signup sheet on the bulletin board in the Choir room upstairs. You can also contact Melody Zentner ([email protected]). Please sign up by June 11th.

Meals on Wheels Day The WSBC Missions Committee and Senior Adult Coordinating Council announce another opportunity for Watts Street to help assemble and pack meals at Meals on Wheels of Durham. The next MOW event is Tuesday, June 27 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. All ages are welcome to participate. We car pool at 8:00 a.m. from the Urban Avenue parking lot to the MOW facility at 2522 Ross Road. Please RSVP to Bob Kruhm ([email protected]) or call the church office to sign up.

WSBC Fall Bazaar – Anniversary Edition Slated for Nov. 4 Mark your calendars for the 40th annual Watts Street Fall Bazaar on Saturday, November 4! If you are able to sew, make handmade craft items, donate artwork or photography, bake cakes or other sweet treats, or work the concession stand, we’d love to have your support. It’s not too early to start your preparations! Contact Steve Ritz or Kelly Sasser with questions. Proceeds support the Good Shepherd Window restoration and our Youth Summer Mission Experiences.

Get to Know Melody Zentner, Our New Director of Music Ministries

Melody Zentner, the newly-named Director of Music Ministries at WS, grew up in upstate New York. She was born into a musical family. Both of her parents were musicians and her two sisters are musical as well. Melody’s father was a public-school music teacher and the director of the choir at the Baptist church they attended in Indian Lake, NY, a small community in the Adirondack mountains. Her mother was the church organist. Melody received her music degree from Ithaca College in Ithaca NY where she met her husband Jeff who was completing his graduate studies.

Melody and Jeff have two daughters, Morgan who resides in Vancouver, BC and Jessica who recently moved to Phoenix, AZ. The Zentner family moved to Durham in 1999 when Melody and Jeff accepted music teaching appointments at Durham Academy. Melody recently retired from DA after having taught music in public and private schools for 38 years. In addition to her work at WSBC Melody currently directs the Durham Chorale and the New Horizon’s Choir sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Institute of Duke University.

Melody’s non-music related interests include swimming, hiking, golfing and reading (mostly mysteries). For a number of years, she and Jeff have enjoyed vacationing at a favorite lakeside cottage near Jeff’s hometown in upstate NY. It is a place of rest and renewal for these two very active people.

Melody is currently making plans for the Adult Choir this Fall. In addition to selecting anthems for the Sunday services she is hoping to collaborate with another Durham church choir to present a major musical work such as Faure’s Requiem. Stay tuned to hear more what our new Director of Music Ministries has in store for us.
