Who is My Neighbor? Learning to Love Like Jesus is this year’s VBS theme. Through five Bible stories, Who Is My Neighbor VBS leads children on a journey to discov-er more about God’s great love. From looking at how to be a neighbor and diving into what it means to live out our faith, this interactive VBS series will lead chil-dren through Bible stories focused on God’s care and compassion for neighbors close at hand and around the world. We invite children, 3 years to fifth graders, to join us as we discover neighbors near and far. It takes many adult and youth volunteers to help make this year’s VBS a success. Meeting for LGTBQ Watts Streeters Watts Street is exploring what it means to further live into our identity as a Welcoming and Affirming Congregation. As part of our understanding that (much like faith) this will always be an ongoing journey, we have held a few conversations with our LGBTQ community. The third gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4, at 7:00 p.m. We’ll gather in the Tillman classroom, next to the chapel, unless we need to spill over into a larger room. If you have any questions, please contact Dorisanne Cooper or Amy Armstrong.

Tai Chi on Tuesdays! Sponsored by the Senior Adult Coordinating Council and led by Barbara Karas, Tai Chi class meets on Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m., in Room 201. People of all ages and abilities are welcome. For questions about the class or to sign up, contact Barbara (919-813-8922).

Wednesday Movie Matinee The Wednesday Movie Matinee, offered by the Senior Adult Coordinating Council, is open to all. Enjoy the movie, along with popcorn and soda, as well as time

with your friends! On June 5,at 1:00 p.m., in room 102, we’ll enjoy The Bucket List. Starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. These two meet in a cancer ward and decide that you only live once, so why not go out in style! Directed by Rob Reiner, these two provide heart and soul with wit and wiles in this salute to life.

Noon Book Club is on summer break and will resume

in September. See you then!

Men’s Breakfast Thursdays, June 13 and 27 at 7:15 a.m., at Elmo’s Diner. Questions? Contact Alan Williams ([email protected]).

The Art of Aging Gracefully Thursdays, June 13 and 27, at 10:30 a.m., in Room 115. David May (919-493-2289) serves as coordinator.

Music News!

May 15 was a wonderful celebration for the children's choirs. Our main theme this year was "Growing in the Spirit" with several fun games, warm-ups, hymns, and anthems to learn. The children had fun and so did the teachers! A big thank you to the volunteers that stepped in when teachers were ill or out of town. We are blessed to have Anne Claire, Jenny Barrier, Cara Valenti and Melody Zentner directing our children's choirs. Our Youth choir, under the direction of Cara

Valenti, has sung several times this year.

Let's not forget the hand bell ringers and their director, John Rublein. It has been a wonderful addition to the music ministry. Thank you to all directors for their time and dedication to the music at Watts Street Baptist.

The music at Watts Street is a blessing to us all. It is something our young people will keep with them throughout their lives.

We still need people to sign up for summer music. The sign up list is on the board in the Chancel Choir room. Please consider sharing your talent. Deadline to sign up is June 7.

The Chancel Choir will be present in the choir loft until June 16. The dedication, talent, humor and love for each other makes this a special group to be a part of. As was mentioned in the May Watts Line, we are looking for a few more singers. If you would like to join the Chancel choir, we would love to have you. Contact Melody Zentner or any choir member if you have any questions.

June Minute for Mission On June 16, Camilla Hovey will speak about the North Carolina Sanctuary Coalition. It started in March of 2018 out of the NC Council of Churches, and is a network of faith communities, organizations, and individuals pledged to stand by immigrants threatened by deportation. Nearly two dozen churches and organizations have become part of the Coalition. Presently, they provide support for individuals living in sanctuary in North Carolina.

Pastor Jose Chicas lives in sanctuary at St John's Baptist Church in Walltown in Durham. After being in the United States for 30 years and attending regular immigration check-ins, he suddenly found himself under threat of deportation a year ago from ICE. While he lives in sanctuary in North Carolina, the Coalition is helping to provide for Pastor Chicas' basic needs and the needs of his family. Checks should be made out to WSBC, with “Sanctuary” on the memo line.

June Mission Baskets The mission baskets in the side foyer and the Fellowship Hall collect school supplies for the youth to take to El Salvador on their upcoming trip. Items requested include spiral bound notebooks, #2 pencils, pens, Crayola markers, backpacks (new only), erasers, scissors, highlighters, pencil pouches (not plastic), lined paper, and colored pencils. Questions? Contact David Heist ([email protected], 919-475-8367).

Meals on Wheels Packing Day Tuesday, June 11 The WSBC Missions Committee and Senior Adult Coordinating Council announce another opportunity for Watts Street to help assemble and pack meals at Meals on Wheels of Durham. The next MOW packing event is Tuesday, June 11, from 8-10:30 a.m. All ages are welcome to participate, including youth who are out of school. We carpool from the Urban Avenue parking lot to the MOW facility at 2522 Ross Road.

RSVP to Bob Kruhm ( [email protected]) or call the church office to sign up.

Join the WSBC Visitation Ministry If you are willing to assist our deacons’ ministry by visiting a member of our church community who is no longer able to worship regularly, consider joining the new visitation ministry. Volunteers will visit once a month. There will be a training and orientation session with lunch on June 23, after worship. Emily McCoy and Anne Drennan are shepherding this ministry and will sound a call on June 2. If you miss worship that day and would like to volunteer or just want to know more, contact Emily (919- 489-2483, [email protected]) or Anne (919-489-2942, [email protected]).

Calling Watts Street Artisans! Mark your calendars for the 42nd annual Watts Street Fall Bazaar on Saturday, November 2. If you are able to sew, make handmade craft items, donate artwork or photography, bake cakes or other sweet treats, or work the concession stand, we’d love to have your support. It’s not too early to start your preparations! Contact Steve Ritz or Kelly Sasser with questions. Proceeds support the Good Shepherd Window restoration and our 2020 Youth Summer Mission Experiences.

Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast On Sunday, June 2, the Children’s Education Ministry committee host’s a Children’s Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. All Children’s Sunday School teachers, Second Hour Volunteers, and Children’s Music Volunteers are welcome to stop by the Fellowship Hall anytime between 8:45 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. for breakfast. We are grateful for your leadership with our children!

Dayspring Summer Sunday School, Dayspring, begins June 23. Children’s classes are combined in the summer with the theme Living in the Land from the Shine curriculum. It takes many volunteers to teach our children over the summer months. If you would like to volunteer in the classroom a few Sundays as a shepherd or a lead teacher, please contact Elizabeth Sasser or Esther Soud Parker. http://bit.ly/WSBCsummer.

Second Hour Ministry Do you like to read to children? Rock babies? Sing Jesus Loves Me? Push children in swings? We have openings in our Second Hour Ministry for the summer and the 2019/2020

church year. Join us as we nurture our youngest each week during worship. Contact Esther Soud Parker to volunteer.

2019 PASSPORTkids Camp The 2019 camp theme is FEARLESS: Stay Awake. Stand Firm. Be Brave. Love Always. In a world that seems to be telling us to fear more and love others less, Jesus calls us to an alternative way of living. Our lives can be radically changed as we notice God at work around us, continue to grow in our faith, gather our strength from God, and let love permeate all that we do. Using 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (CEB) as a theme verse and outline for the week, campers will be challenged as they dig into this passage (and others) to explore what Paul meant when he called us all to live a faith that is based in love, not in fear. When we are FEARLESS we can LOVE MORE and FEAR LESS.

Final payment for camp is $205.00 and is due now!

Bucket Auction Rodeo a Rip-Roarin’ Success! At our Youth Spring Bucket Auction Rodeo on May 5, we “rounded up” over $6,250 for our Youth Summer Mission Experiences! YEEE-HAW!!! The food was tasty and the energy in the room was outstanding. Thank you, thank you to everyone who donated, bought tickets, bid in the live auction, decorated, advertised, prepared food, served food, poured drinks, helped in the kitchen, worked the welcome table, and helped with clean-up. The whole event was lots of fun with tons of winners and at least one magical moment when a dream of a new bike came true!!!

Hooray for Pupusas! The pupusas arrived a little late at the Church Meeting on May 19 but apparently, they were worth the wait! We received $1,559 in donations for our Senior High trip to El Salvador! Esto es excelente!!! Very special thanks to Paula Januzzi-Godfrey for coordinating the meal and to everyone who made desserts, helped with food prep, served the meal, and cleaned up.

Pop-Up Parent Night 5:15-6:45 p.m., June 2 at Maverick’s Smokehouse (900 W. Main St.) Drop your youth off for youth group at 5 p.m., then come on over! This is a great way to connect with other parents of teenagers and to enjoy an evening of good food and fellowship!

It’s Time for “The Wattsies”! All youth, parents, and youth ministry volunteers are cordially invited to the umpteenth annual Wattsie Awards/End of the Year Youth Ministry Celebration on Sunday, June 9! The party runs from 4:30-7 p.m., at the clubhouse in Grace McDaniel’s neighborhood (check your email soon for driving directions.) Bring a potluck dish to share and join us for a preview of our Summer 2019 activities, presentations of “Wattsie” awards, and a special tribute to the Class of 2019!

Youth Group Summer 2019 World Tour On Sunday nights during the summer, our youth group goes on tour! Each week we have youth group in a different home. We meet from 5 to 7 p.m. with a light supper included. Check your “Watts Happening!” email each week for locations and driving directions.

Youth Needed for VBS Staff Sunday, June 16-Thursday, June 20 is VBS Week at Watts Street! We need all the youth helpers we can get to make this event a success. Note: We’ll have a special appreciation dinner for all youth VBS volunteers on Wednesday night, June 19 at El Rodeo in Brightleaf Square. Meet there at 5:30 and we’ll conclude by 6:45 p.m.

Golden Anniversary News This month marks the 50th anniversary of the installation of Austin Organs Opus 2501. Please save these dates:

1) Evensong for Ascension Day and Thanksgiving for the Austin Organ on Saturday, June 1, at 3:00 p.m. The Chancel will sing Charles Villiers Stanford’s Evening Service in G (with soloists); an anthem setting of Psalm 47, “O Clap Your Hands,” by Martin Shaw; and hymns and prayers.

2) On August 24, Paula Harrell, organist of White Rock Baptist Church will present a recital. 3) I will present an organ recital on Saturday, November 23, at 3:00 p.m. The program will include some

organ music history and many of the pieces you hear Sunday by Sunday, along with new pieces pre-pared for the occasion.

Watch this summer for some organ pop-ups, including an inside look at the innards of the organ, an orienta-tion to how the organ is played, and a physics lesson. Organ trivia: 1) The earliest extant printed organ music is contained in the Robertsbridge Codex, dating from about 1360. One of these pieces will be included in my November recital. 2) Austin has installed more than 80 pipe organs in North Carolina. Many are still in use today.

Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

Psalm 150:4
