July/August Mission Baskets Mission Baskets in the side foyer and the Fellowship Hall collect donations to help teachers at Merrick Moore Elementary (a Durham Public School) supply their classrooms this year. Spend any time at all around Mary Elizabeth and you’ll soon find out that she has many gifts and passions for the work of the church. Here at Watts Street we have been privileged to be on the receiving end of one of those passions and gifts—children’s music ministry—for many years. For the last almost twenty years, through her volunteer work and time on our church staff, Mary Elizabeth has generously led the children of this community in connecting with God and each other through music. Her delight in seeing children as worship leaders, her confidence in their abilities, her passion at helping them connect to God’s story in the world have all woven their way into her leadership here. We are grateful beyond measure for the ways she had led and shepherded children from birth through their elementary years, the ways she has cultivated and supported her volunteers and all of the ways she has shared the song of faith in her teaching and time. We especially wanted to share with you some of the reflections of the children with whom she has ministered. Mary Elizabeth, we do indeed thank God that you have been here.

This summer Mary Elizabeth is serving at Ephesus Baptist Church, but this Fall her work with the North Carolina

Council of Churches will take on additional responsibilities. We are grateful that the Hanchey family will continue

to be a part of Watts Street!

Vacation Bible School Peace Lab What an exciting week at VBS! With the theme, Peace Lab: Discover God’s Way of Peace, we experienced ways to be compassionate peacemakers. Bible stories taught us ways to resolve conflicts and help others. Children made two beautiful Peace banners, one for the Hope House in Durham and another one to hang at WSBC. We collected $186.38 for refugees at the Hope House. In addition, we donated many household items for a Welcome Home Pack for our youth to take to the homeless, served by Homeward Bound in Asheville. Children also played fun games, did cool science experiments, and learned many new songs.

Special thanks to all our wonderful youth and adult volunteers who made the week a success. We could not have done it without each of you!

From Dorisanne Cooper

Church ministry in the summer is an interesting experience. On the one hand during the summer months, people anticipate that things will slow down a bit in various areas. And often they do. Regardless of what one’s work schedule is, summer is often a time when people make time to get away for a while, or visit family, or change their routine just a bit. And some of our rhythms at church reflect that. Our choirs of all ages take a well-earned break. We take a break from Wednesday night programming. Committee meetings often find people out of town (and an important commitment we have as a church is to avoid committee meetings during the month of July). It’s even natural that worship attendance varies a little more week to week then it does during the year.

But part of what makes the summer interesting is that all of this isn’t a hint about the general pace of church life across the board. In fact, during the summer, youth and children’s ministries ramp up in the opposite direction. Given the freedom of a break from school, ministers want to take advantage of the time they can spend with our young people, heading to camp and into service learning opportunities, fostering community in ways that extended time can nurture, helping them engage their faith with the world around them in ways there is a little more brain space for when they don’t have the added stress of school.

In the mix this summer we have begun a year of transition when we are trying out a few new things, when the staff ministers are adjusting our responsibilities, finding new rhythms, and discerning plans and action for the year to come. As part of this, there are a lot of conversations going on right now, what I call “summer simmering,” though really plenty is cooking with full heat right now. The Deacons are considering some new patterns for their ministry. Stewardship met this week to start planning for the Fall. In Missions we’re planning for a retreat for mission group leaders this Fall. Our Education committees are hard at work (see paragraph two about Children’s and Youth ministries). Adult Ed has organized SS forums for us. Church Council met this week to keep on top of our church life on several different fronts. The Budget Prep Committee (made up of current and future committee chairs) meets tonight to begin considering our 2019 budget. An Ad Hoc group is working on prioritizing the work we need to do on our building. Another group is meeting to talk about the next educational steps in our denominational discernment process. And finally, I’m meeting today with some church members this very day about how to better organize our advocacy efforts at the church, how in the midst of deeply disturbing reports of human rights violations, of unjust governmental practices at our borders (among so many other issues), we can use our voices and lives together to keep speaking and acting on behalf of those on the margins.

As I said, summer is an interesting time for church ministry—important breaks in some areas, but also deepening engagement in others, all part of the journey that we’re on together to continually grow into who God calls us to be in the world and on the corner of Watts and Urban. I’m grateful to be on the journey with you.
