On May 5, hoots and hollers could be heard when Whitney Necessary was awarded Teacher of the Year for the first time. BLACK AND GOLD REVUE

To most school clubs, a week-end without competition is con-sidered a break, but for members of the Oak Grove High School drama department, a weekend in Disney World made for the perfect break to punctuate a successful season. Sponsored by the International Thespian Soci-ety (ITS), the Disney trip served as a reward for students’ perfor-mances in the Arabian Nights, the spring show, senior one acts, and all other shows that took place throughout the year. Surrounded by iconic monu-ments like Cinderella Castle and The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Princess Scheherazade and King Shahryar were finally reunited with their Disney royal counter-parts.

Seniors sign scholarships to further pursue arts

Wind Ensemble wins big in ATL

By: Chelsy HaynesStaff Reporter

To many, the arts is just a fancy way of describing singing or danc-ing, but to the recipients of arts scholarships, it is anything but that. It is a lifestyle. It is who they are. Many students involved in ei-ther band, show choir, or theatre auditioned for their chance to be awarded a scholarship, and 23 stu-dents were rewarded for their ef-forts.

These students trained hard to get where they are now and hope to continue their art in college. “I like being in theatrical events, and the opportunity to do it on a collegiate level was presented to me through William Carey, so I am going to take it,” senior Sawyer Walters said. “Mrs. A has been a great step-ping stone and a huge help in pre-paring me for the next level.” Se-

At the conclusion of marching season, which corresponds with football season, the Oak Grove band begins to prepare for their concert season, which includes multiple regional contests and per-formances. This year, the Wind En-semble, the top band of three con-cert bands within the Oak Grove band, was invited to perform in the Southern Star Music Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. Southern Star is a relatively exclusive band contest, inviting only 38 bands, orchestras, and choirs from nine states. The Wind Ensemble had the opportu-nity to play their music from the previous state evaluation for three judges who each gave the band high superior ratings. The group also won the Gold Award, Sweep-

nior Logan McCarty also believes that the theatre department at Oak Grove High has helped him get the scholarship. “The theatre program here has prepared me for wheat I am going to do in college,” Mc-Carty said. “I am very excited for the scholarship and joining the William Carey theatre program.” Many band students were also chosen for the award. “I have such a strong passion for music,” senior AJ Robinson said. “I have a zealous enthusiasm for music that propels me forward. Mrs. Laird requires her wind ensemble members to try out for the SEMBDA honor band every year, and I believe she does so for the scholarship opportunities it opens up.”

All students that accepted an award signed on May 7 at the Arts Signing Day event. Pictures were taken, smiles were shared, and ev-eryone had an awesome time. Af-

stakes Award, and the Grand Champion Award. Junior band member Yulianna Jimenez was ex-cited about their success. “I’m just happy we’ve been given opportu-nities like this to show off our tal-ents and skills. Taking advantage

ter the ceremony, the seniors knew that they had a decision to make. For most, the decision was easy, but for others, it was harder than expected. All in all, the recipients of the arts scholarships were very pleased with the results of the cer-

of these chances allows us to create better opportunities for the future of the Wind Ensemble, and of the entire Oak Grove Band program,” Jimenez said. In addition to their winnings in Atlanta, the Wind En-semble has had quite a successful

emony and are ready to start fresh in college next year. “Without the Oak Grove band program, I would not be half the musician I am today,” Robinson said. “I am ready to get involved and grow as a musician.”

concert season. They, along with the second Symphonic Band, received all superior ratings at State Evaluation, and the Wind Ensemble got to perform the opening concert for the William Carey Honor Band Clinic.

This year, Mr. Yore, Span-ish teacher, introduced OGHS students to a unique opportu-nity: spending six days in the predominantly Spanish-speak-ing country of Costa Rica. This summer, students around the country will journey to the Latin American nation to tour the tropical jungles, volcanic mountain tops, and the di-verse set of ecosystems at home in this hospitable, alluring, and foreign country rich in educational value. Amazingly enough, no Oak Grove stu-dents will be among the 2014 summer student tour. Not able to meet the mandatory fifteen student requirement necessary to make the trip this year, Yore hopes to create a 2016 sum-mer itinerary with Costa Rica on his list of destinations.

The end of the school year means many things: audi-tions for clubs next year, the senior class graduating, and of course, show choir’s final per-formance. The OGHS show choir performed a compilation of both their exhibition and competition pieces, as well as songs from their South-ern Rock Medley at William Carey University on Saturday, March 5. After winning third place at a national competi-tion, show choir finished their triumphant season with a har-monious bang. Sophomore Brittany Haynes summed up the show choir’s year perfectly when she said, “This season, I learned a lot. I experienced a lot, and I am beyond looking forward to another year.”

Biscuits, sausage, muffins, yo-gurt, and yearbooks may sound like an odd combination, but on May 2, all seniors who pur-

chased a yearbook attended the Senior Breakfast hosted by the yearbook staff. Food was shared, yearbooks were signed, and ev-eryone had a great time remi-niscing on their final year at Oak Grove High School.

The breakfast was enjoyed by many including co-editor of the yearbook Aubrey Sand-ers. “I think the breakfast went very smoothly,” Sanders said. “Everyone seemed to enjoy both the breakfast and yearbooks.” Seniors came from all over the school with invitations in hand to get into the breakfast and enjoy some quality time with friends.

Although the breakfast ran without any errors, there were some slip ups. Some seniors de-cided that even though they did not purchase a yearbook or re-ceive an invitation, they were go-ing to be at the breakfast. “Some people came to the breakfast and ate the donated food, but did not buy a yearbook,” Sand-ers said. “Through the swarm of people that came in, some peo-ple slipped through who did not purchase a yearbook. We should

have been clearer about the only people who were allowed to come.” Co-editory Bailey McCain felt the same way. She even suggested that some added security would not hurt.

The yearbook staff worked extremely hard on the yearbook this year and is very proud of their work. “After working on the book for an entire school year, it is definitely bittersweet,” Sanders said. It has been a long and tasking year for the year-book staff, but they have defi-nitely made the most of their time because it has paid off. “I loved watching the other seniors look through the book,” Mc-Cain said. “The breakfast gave everyone time to get signatures, and I hope they enjoyed it as much as we did. We worked so hard on this book, and I believe our hard work has paid off and it shows.”

Culinary the trip. Whereas some of the teams have worked on projects like these for years, Missis-sippi is just starting. New to national competition, this was an eye opening experience for OG culinary, and future teams will know the expectations and standards in place at such

a competitive league. Never-theless, Miller is proud of her students. “My students are all winners in my book,” Miller said. Senior and team leader Sarah Smith said, “I could not be any more proud of my team, even if we had won. We did our very best and made our

school and our state proud. I will never forget my time in culinary arts or the trip to na-tionals. It was a perfect way to end senior year, and I can’t wait to hear about Oak Grove taking on nationals again in the future.”

The Oak Grove Warrior golf teams’ seasons drew to a close after the state tournament in which the boys’ team placed twelfth overall and and the girls’ team placed eighth. Under first year head coach Drew Causey, both the boys and girls golf members gained much knowledge and a better understand-ing of the game from the well-known football coach. “We had a lot of young golfers who got a lot better as the season

progressed,” Causey said. Both teams recently competed in the

state tournament held at Lake Caroline golf course in Madison, Mississippi. The boys team, led by Mississippi State sign-ee Grant Motter and junior Jake Rob-erts, fell short of medaling as a team. However, Motter placed in the top ten individually with a two day total of 147 (73-74), three over par for the two round competition. Roberts shot 80-79 for a two-day total of 159. He placed in the top 20. Roberts will be called upon to replace Motter as the Warriors number

one golfer next year, something Motter has done since he was a freshman.

The girls’ team featured a host of young golfers, led by eighth grader Macaleigh Mancuso. Mancuso tied for ninth overall in the Class III competition. The girls’ state tournament was held at Clear Creek Golf Course in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Mancuso, who shot 93-94, was followed by teammate Mikayla Horn who shot 108-114 to lead the charge for the Lady

Warriors. “I had a great time coaching golf this

year. We had a team that really worked hard to get better, and I re-ally looked forward to prac-tice everyday,” Causey said.

The Warrior future is looking very bright. Only three seniors will be leaving after this season. With golf growing in popularity every

year, the roster will continue to flourish with young golfers eager to improve.

The Oak Grove War-rior baseball team made it through their first three games of the playoffs suc-cessfully with strong pitching from veterans. The Warriors outscored Biloxi in the first round 18 to 2, winning the games 5-1 and 13-1, respec-tively. The Warriors then ad-vanced to their second round of play and defeated Gulfport 5-0 in Game one.

Southern Miss signee Kirk McCarty (5-1) went the dis-tance in both of his appear-ances, throwing seven innings of one run, two hit baseball against Biloxi. The score was tied at one a piece until the bottom of the fifth inning. McCarty and fellow South-ern Miss signee Taylor Braley hit back-to-back homeruns, sealing the deal for the black and gold. In game one against Gulfport this past Friday, McCarty threw seven innings again, this time only allowing one hit and no runs for the Admirals. Braley and fresh-man Drew Boyd each tallied

two hits for the Warriors in the win over Gulfport.

In game two against Bi-loxi, Pearl River signee John Carter Sanner (5-0), like Mc-Carty in his first outing, only gave up two hits through four innings, also adding two RBIs at the plate. Junior Mat-thew Guidry and Braley each had three RBIs to lead the offensive explosion. Junior Laken Wilson was 4 for 4 on the Biloxi series.

With these wins, the War-riors are now one win away from a third straight South State Championship appear-ance. The Warriors would face district foe Brandon, a team whom the black and gold beat two out of three times in the regular season.“We’ve got to survive and advance, just like they say in March Mad-ness,” head coach Chris Mc-Cardle said to his team after the series win at Biloxi.

The South State Cham-pionship series would begin Thursday at Harry Breland Field with game two being played at Brandon and game three, if needed, will again be at Oak Grove.

On May 3, 2014, the Oak Grove fastpitch soft-ball team fell to Harri-son Central in the third round of the Mississippi 6A playoffs. After winning the state championship in 2013, the Lady Warriors were hoping to again win the championship, yet such an accomplishment was apparently not in the cards for this season.

After becoming the district champions, the Lady Warriors received a bye from the first round of playoffs while other district teams battled for the chance to advance to second round. The Lady Warriors faced D’Iberville in the second round of playoffs and easily swept them with scores of 15-0 and 14-0. “After beating D’Iberville, we felt con-nected and united,” junior second baseman Kristen Martin said. “We felt like we had grown in our chem-istry on and off the field.”

Once they defeated D’Iberville, the Lady War-riors then moved on to face Harrison Central. Oak Grove hosted Har-

rison Central at home for the first game of the best-of-three series on Friday, May 2. Harrison Central gained an early lead, yet the Lady Warriors rallied late in the game to lessen the score deficit; however, the Rebellettes eventually defeated Oak Grove 6-5. The next morning, Oak Grove traveled to Harrison Central in hopes of win-ning the second game of the series in order to force a third game, and they did so by a score of 6-4. Im-mediately following the second game was the third “if-game” that would de-termine which team would advance to the South State Championships. While the Lady Warriors battled, they eventually lost the third game, ending their 2014 season.

While their season may not have ended as they had hoped, the Lady Warriors have much of which to be proud. Even though they graduated three starting players in 2013, the team had many young players step up to contribute to a winning season, thus prov-ing that the Lady Warriors have the capability to come back stronger in 2015.

Runners from schools all over the country put in hours of work each and every day to become the best he or she can be.

One of those thousands of schools is Oak Grove High School, where the track team is a powerhouse throughout the state. Senior Trey Sloan, ju-nior Peter Harper, sophomore Brandon Clark, and freshman Dante Armstrong blew away the competition in the South State meet, winning first place in both the open 400 and the 4x4 relay. By doing this, these athletic young men qualified for the state championship

track meet. On May 10, runners took a

trip to Pearl, MS to put their skills to the test against seven opposing teams on the biggest stage in high school athletics. In the MHSAA track state champi-onship, the OGHS team placed 4th in the 4X4 relay while Peter Harper individually placed 4th in the open 400. “It was a to-tally different atmosphere at the championship meet. There were runners there who had a level of experience I had never seen be-fore,” senior Trey Sloan said.

The result was not exactly what they had hoped for, but the team is staying positive about future success. “There is always room for improvement, but I think our guys will keep their focus on

the right track,” Sloan said. “It is a huge accomplishment to even qualify for the state champion-ship in any sport, so this season was a success in my book,” Sload added. Two values will remain the same in these runners despite the outcome of any track season: hard work and dedication.

Warrior runners will continue to put in hours of preparation whether they just won the na-tional track championship or if they didn’t even qualify for the state championship. “If you put in hard work and grind every day, it will pay off in anything you do. Next year, we are going to come back much better than we were this year,” junior Peter Harper said.

Spring means these two things for the average high school stu-dent: warm weather and music festivals. Senior Mary Hannah Ruff chose to attend a music festival instead of attending her senior prom. “The lineup was just too good to pass up,” Ruff said. Ruff was one of the 75,000 people who came together in the deserts of Indio, California, for the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Coach-ella showcases both emerging and popular artists. This year’s lineup included Ellie Goulding, Cage the Elephant, and Lorde. “My fa-vorite artists were Lana Del Ray and Kid Cudi,” Ruff said, “but my favorite band was Naked & Afraid.” These were only a few of the acts sharing their music at Coachella.

Coachella is North America’s biggest music festival, but Ruff will also be attending Hangout Fest May 16-18 to see the rest of her favorite bands. Hangout Fest lineup for this year includes The Avett Brothers, The Kill-ers, and OutKast. Both festivals had or will have televised por-tions for those who could not travel to see the shows live. Like Hangout Fest, Coachella offers campsites. With huge sponsors like Sephora and H&M, Coach-ella entertains their concert junk-ies with so much more than just

music. H&M provides free water and plenty of shopping oppor-tunities. Sephora gives chances to touch up makeup, cool off in air conditioning, and charge phones. From snow ball fights to bad dancing contests, Coach-ella’s downtime activities have to be nearly as entertaining as the music.

As with other music festivals, Coachella has an unspoken dress code of flower child-inspired clothing. From flowered head-bands to printed shorts, people wore clothing they would never have worn in the “real world.” Converse were all over the place. Celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Beyoncé adhered to the dress code and dressed as their hippie alter egos. Celebrities and music

festival goers were nearly indis-tinguishable due to their similar clothing choices. All appearance-based judgements disappear dur-ing Coachella’s weekend of mu-sic.

People from all over the world come to Coachella for a weekend to see the most adored musicians of this generation. Ruff has no regrets of choosing this music festival over prom. “Prom was fun when I went my junior year,” Ruff said, “But it’s the same thing every year. I’d rather spend that money seeing my favorite bands and artists than on a dress I will wear once.” Despite missing a night with familiar friends, Ruff is confident she made right deci-sion in choosing a weekend mak-ing new friends.

In 2002, Harry Crumpler and his family took over T-Bones’s ownership. “The vision was to be a great independent record store. “We all love music here and enjoy helping people find music that means some-thing to them. Furthering that thought has always been at the core of our vision,” he said. One of the best parts about T-Bones,

in Crumpler’s words, is the wide customer demographic.

Although I don’t own a record player, the record shop always seems to have a wide selection of vinyl, and if they don’t have what customers are looking for, then T-Bones will always order that record.

T-Bones always features local and up-and-coming bands on weekends. They also have a jazz brunch from 11am to 2pm on Sundays where they feature jazz musicians from Southern Miss. This is my (and probably half of Hattiesburg’s) favorite time to eat at T-Bones.

T-Bones is known for its cus-tomer service. Every time I walk into the store, I’m always greeted by an employee who seems gen-uinely interested in how I’m do-ing. This kind of customer ser-vice is extremely refreshing.

Six years ago, T-Bones reno-vated some extra office space, turning it in the café. They also

recently completed a second café expansion. My favorite coffee drink at T-Bones is probably the cold brew. I always order mine made with almond milk and with a shot of caramel. The red velvet cake balls are also superb, but my favorite food item on the menu is probably the breakfast casserole. Each soup that I have had has also been delicious. The café has a weekly rotating soup menu. The sandwiches are also good (I like the Evil Twin, mi-nus the jalapenos), and the sal-ads and other veggies and fruits are always very fresh and usually

are organic. Each salad dress-ing is made from scratch in the kitchen. (The Vidalia onion is spectacular.)

T-Bones is always looking for ways to improve. “I’d like us to become an institution, a place where anyone can come and get good food and good music. We have many ideas for improve-ments in the future. It is always a ‘work in progress,’” Crumpler said. Whatever the improve-ments, I will always happily make the drive down Hardy Street to enjoy a cup of cold brew and a plate of cake balls.

You have to ride the ferris wheel.

You have to be told you’re the most beautiful girl in the world by random foreigners that can barely speak English.

You have to lose a friend in the mosh pit.

You have to find a meeting place for after you lose your friend in the mosh pit.

You have to make friends with everyone you stand by no matter the concert.

You have to lay in the grass while listening to the more chill bands.

You have to dance.

You have to spend at least $20 on water everyday.

You have to be nonjudgmental.

And lastly, you have to be open minded to all the different things and people you are going to see. You have to develop a sense of community with them because everyone is there for the same reason.

FAREWELL

morgan guess, editor

I cringe at the thought of gradu-ation. It seems like just this year I found a comfortable routine, know-ing where all my classes are located, and growing closer to the teachers who teach them. Through all the complaining and the conformity of uniforms, I’ve realized that Oak Grove has provided so many op-portunities that some aren’t offered. During my four years here, I joined almost every club including Robot-ics, Spanish Club, Red Cross, Beta Club, Art Club, Diamond Girls, and Newspaper. Of course, there are more each year. That’s what it means to be a part of a 6A public school: becoming involved. Transferring in third grade from private school, I hated not knowing anyone and having a classroom with double the amount of students. Looking back, moving to Oak Grove was the best thing that could’ve happened to me. Walking into the lunch room fresh-man year, I knew there was a place and a friend for everyone. You just can’t be intimidated by new people, older or younger. You would be sur-prised how normal people actually are. True, some won’t become your lifelong friends, but you have to be determined when meeting new peo-ple. Make an effort, and the results will eventually be satisfactory. I’ve found that senior year is the time you find who your true friends are because you bond over the struggle of pulling through the final days un-til graduation. Appreciate your time here, accept the people around you, and anticipate everything that fol-lows. Remember, if you’re really late you might as well be 40 minutes late with a nice breakfast to show for it- Chick fil A and Java Moe’s. God has a plan for everyone, so don’t worry or stress about anything. Give it your all, and set standards. If you can take an AP class with passing grades, do it. Who cares if you’re not the best of the best. Sometimes there isn’t room for all the classes you want along with extracurriculars, but you learn to prioritize. I’m ready for the next chapter in my life, and Oak Grove has been the perfect prologue for what’s to come. I can’t wait to marry Vampire Weekend lead singer and guitarist Ezra Koenig, while rooming and teaching with Sarah Smith who will eventually marry a handsome veterinarian. To some, this is only to be continued. To others, this is my final farewell.

XOXO,Morgan Guess

FAREWELL

luke smith, staff reporter

All good things must come to an end at some point in every per-son’s life. Sadly, but surely, my time here at Oak Grove High School has reached its conclusion. I am looking forward to the days that lie ahead, but it is always good to reflect on our progress. The chang-es you will experience from ninth grade to twelfth grade are almost unbelievable. Many runny-nosed whippersnappers will turn into grizzly young men with lumberjack beards in a matter of years. Timid, young girls who are still figuring out who they are will soon become the almighty senior girls whom ev-eryone looks up to. Wisdom and confidence usually come with age and experience. I encourage you all to make as many friends as you can and act like your true self around them, however weird and dumb you may look while doing it. Have fun and don’t worry about what others think of you, and people will want to be your friend. Don’t be afraid of failure because it will come. Learn from your mistakes and they will form the foundation for much greater things in your life. There is not a class at any high school that teaches these things, but your experiences in high school will reveal these things to you. Thank you, Oak Grove high school. Rock on.

It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission.”- Madison Ashley

FINAL FAREWELL

chelsy haynes, staff reporter

Wow! This has been such an amazing year. Oak Grove will for-ever be in my memories. Moving to New York is a big step, but being a student at Oak Grove has helped me in so many ways to prepare for my future. To all of the students of Oak Grove, be yourself. Don’t change for anyone except yourself. You are beautiful people, and you were made that way for a reason. Madeline Albright once said, “We must be the authors of the history of our me.” Write your life in the form of a script and play the lead role in your movie titled “ME.” Live your life to the fullest, and never back down from your dreams be-cause you WILL make it through any storm, no matter how bad. Love yourself, and always be proud of everything you do because what you do now will get you where you want to be later. I wish you all the best of luck.

Sarah Smith -

Macey James - Falling asleep on the table on my birthday at Rio Grande.Paul Lee - My 18th birthday when my very best friends threw a surprise birthday party for me.Sierra Sullivan - I’d have to say being a part of the drama department. It has really changed my life.Luke Little - Junior roll night.John Clayton Nelson - Running foul poles in catching. gear. #CatcherProbsJanai Joseph - The State game.

farewellCLASS OF 2014

Good luck in all of your future endeavors, especially my senior tennis girls! We will miss you guys on the courts! To all of you headed to college, remember that making a ‘living’ is not the same thing as making a ‘life.’ To all of you headed into the real world, remember that real success is liking yourself and liking what you do.”

- Ms. Samantha Padgett

‘If things start happening, don’t worry, don’t stew, just go right along and you’ll start happening too.’ - Dr. Seuss God has blessed me greatly to have had the opportunity to get to know each of you. You will always and forever be an ingredient in the recipe of my life. I believe each one of you will accomplish great things, and I am so proud of you. Now get your chef coat on, go out in the world, and create something wonderful.”

- Ms. Debbie Miller

I’m so thankful for the time I got to spend with each of my seniors this year! I love you all and know that you will all be successful in your own way! Congratulations and best of luck in all that you do! I’m so proud of y’all! :)”

- Ms. Jamie Parker

About a third of you were my students my first year teaching. Thank you for making it a great and memorable year. “

- Mr. John Cowan

To the Underwater Robotics Team seniors: it has been a great privilege working with you these couple of years, and I couldn’t be prouder of you! I look forward to seeing what you will become in the future! To all seniors: I wish you all the best in your future endeavors! ‘We rejoice in our trials because trials produce patience; patience, character; and character, hope; and hope never fails us.”’ Romans 5:3-5 God bless! :)”

- Ms. Shelley Songy

I will so miss the class of 2014! This group is so special to me. I have known them since kindergarten and seen them grow into exceptional young men and women. I will miss providing LOTS of them with lunch money, notes to class, a place of refuge, or just a quiet place to study. OGHS won’t be the same without you. Congratulations, Class of 2014! “

- Ms. Elyse Rieder

Congratulation class of 2014. Now it is time to take your journey. You will succeed, and you will do great. Seek to find your purpose in life and you will know what path to take. RESPECT, TRUST, AND HONOR are your greatest tools, but GOD SHOULD BE YOUR DESTINY. Many blessings upon you all. “

- Ms. Pam Sandifer

Always remember: Warriors are RESPONSIBLE RESPECTFUL individuals on the ROAD TO SUCCESS!”

- Ms. Jennifer Kelly

I wish you all the best, even if you give me grief and complain most of the time. I enjoyed teaching all of you...the good, the bad, and the research paper. Remember these words, ‘The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.’ - Emerson”

- Ms. Stephanie Slay

I was pleasantly surprised by the Class of 2014’s joy, friendliness, intelligence, work ethic, sense of humor, and dedication. I share memories with this class that I will never forget. The only thing that could have made this class better is having a bookshelf.

- Mrs. Amelia Decker (Momma Deck)

Congratulations to the Class of 2014. Many exciting things are ahead for you. I have some words of wisdom for the new graduates:

1. Set educational/career goals and stick to them.2. Go to class.3. Don’t let your social life take priority over your educational goals.4. Be open to new experiences. If you spend your entire life scared to leave your comfort zone, you will miss out on some great experiences.5. Humility leads to success; arrogance leads to failure.6. Thank the people who helped you get to where you are.”

- Mr. Darren Dale

‘Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold.’This rhyme comes to mind when I think about the Class of ‘14. So many of you started school with Aubrey back in 2001, and I’ve grown to love you very much. Then, there are those of you who have moved to OG through the years, and I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know and love you, too. I hope that the relationships you’ve formed will continue, but if they don’t, please take away the VALUE of forming them. Much can be learned from being a true friend. “

FAREWELL

kirk mccarty, sports editor

“It’s been real. It’s been fun. It just ain’t been real fun.” My Uncle Matt frequently says to me after one of our always interesting fam-ily outings. I’ve always wanted to find a perfect situation of my own to use his signature saying. Unfortu-nately, this is not that perfect situa-tion. It has been real fun, and I can’t believe it’s coming to an end. As a freshman, senior year seemed light years away, but after a short power nap, (high school is definitely lon-ger than a blink of an eye no mat-ter how many people say “don’t blink”) your senior year is coming to a close. Although high school is only a short period in one’s life, it is crucial in preparation for the stages of life to come. While at this fine in-stitute of learning, never let the awe of the high school atmostphere lose its luster. High school can be the best or the worst four years of your life, and that outcome is primarily dependent on the mindset of each individual as they roll themself out of bed every day (even Mondays) to come to school. There are very few things in life that I love more than I have loved my time at Oak Grove, a nice steak, singing in the shower, and, of course, Ron Burgundy. I will sign off forever with the same words the legendary anchorman signed off with to the great people of San Di-ego, “Stay classy, Oak Grove High School.”
