Chapter 1

Stoke is a good place to start!

The earliest "Walton" on our tree is Joseph. He was born around 1695 in Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire. Hemarried Elizabeth Pope on the 18th May 1715. We have records for two children of Joseph and Elizabeth. These records are from baptisms. The dates and places fit with following generations. The first child of Joseph and Elizabeth was named Joseph and he was baptised on the 3rd February 1722 . Joseph was possibly married to Ann. The following baptisms are from the St Peter's Church Stoke parish records - Richard Walton 27th July 1746 son of Joseph and Ann of Hanley and James Walton 20th Feb 1762 son of Joseph and Ann of Hanley.

The second child of Joseph and Elizabeth Pope was named William Walton and is our direct line (the secondgeneration). William was christened on th 15th April in 1732 in Stoke Upon Trent Staffordshire. We also know that William was married to someone called Mary. There are no more details for Mary, her maiden name is unknown. Christening records for William and Mary's children are the only records of Mary's name.

The picture of St Peter's Church in Stoke on the left is a copy of a postcard and was dated 1893. Stoke Town Hall known now as the Kings Hall can be seen in the background.

William Walton and his wife Mary had six known children, it is the first one called Samuel who is our direct line (the third generation). Samuel was baptised on the 6th August 1758 in St Peter's Church Stoke Upon Trent. The other known children of William and Mary were Joseph, Mary, Jane, Thomas and John.Samuel baptised in 1758 married Elizabeth Grocott on the 27th December 1778 in St Giles Church NewcastleUnder Lyme, Both signed with a mark and the witness's were Timothy Leigh and John Cole.

On the right here is acopy of the Banns ofMarriage for SamuelWalton and ElizabethGroucott.

This water colour by John Whessell completed in 1841 – 1842 is of St. Giles Church Newcastle Under Lyme, it is taken from the Staffordshrie Past Track website. The church existed as shown here between 1721 and 1876 which included the time of the marriage of Samuel Walton and Elizabeth Groucott. It was rebuilt in 1876 in the Gothic revival style which is the church that exists at the present time,

Samuel and Elizabeth had four known children, the first one was named Samuel the same name as his father and is our direct line (our fourth generation). He was baptised on the 14th March 1779 in St Peter's Church Stoke Upon Trent. The other known children of Samuel and Elizabeth were a son William and daughters Mary and Phebe.

Samuel Walton born 1779 married Lititia Goodwin in St Edwards Church Leek on the 2nd January 1809, this was by licence and stated tha Samuel Walton was of Stone in Staffordshire and his wife Lettice was of Leek Parish. Both of them signed their own names. Recorded as witnesses were Franc's Williams and John Allicors? (mark). Samuel and Lettice (sometimes written Letitia) had seven known children. It is the third one George that is in our direct line (the fifth generation). Samuel was a Farm Labourer when his son George was born.

Boatpeople

The map above is dated 1795 and shows the route of the Trent and Mersey Canal. This is the canal that was worked by George Walton and many of his inlaws the Condliffes. The families of the Waltons and Condliffes were living in the area of the bottom of the first vertical strip on the map.

Page 7: The Waltons

George (our fifth generation of Waltons) was born at Braidley Farm Cheadle Staffordshire. He was baptised as George Goodwin Walton in St Giles Church Cheadle Staffordshire on the 5th May 1813. It is interesting that there are two St Gile's chuches in Cheadle, an Anglican one which is the likely place of George's baptism, and Catholic one. Both churches were been rebuilt after 1813. The Catholic church is of particular note and is known as Pugin's Gem. Pugin designed and built this stunning church in the gothic revival style in the 1840's. Pugin is more famous for designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster.

From the 1851 census we see that George Walton was in Shardlow Derbyshire with wife Martha and children Eliza, George, Martha and Sarah.

His occupation was given as Canal Carriers Boatman and his birthplace as Stafford Cheadle. An odd ommision from this census return is the name of William Walton. William who would have been around two years old at at the time, he was born in Shardlow and his father was George Walton.

George had married Martha Condliffe on 16th May 1836 at Christchurch Alsager. Marriage George Walton of this parish bachelor and Martha Condliffe of this parish spinster Wit James Barker & Parish Clerk. George and Martha had ten known children, it is the eighth child Samuel that is in our direct line.

It has not been possible to find any record of George in the 1861 census, and also until recently his wife Martha their young chilldren William and Samuel. More about Martha, William and Samuel in Chapter 3. It is also of note that Martha married again to John Foden in 1870.

Martha had another child called John in 1859 and it is notable that George was not mentioned as the father. There are records for 10 known children for George and Martha. Son Samuel quotes him as "George Walton" on his marriage certificate and Samuel's brother William Walton also quotes George as his father. There are some records of George and his wife Martha being named at the christenings of some their children, mainly at Christchurch Alsager. Their abode is given as either Thurlwood, Odd Rode, Salt Works Odd Rode or Salt Works Lawton. George's occupation Boatsman or Boatman. His occupation was thought for a long time to be the reason for not finding him on a census and in particular none of his family appearing in the 1861 census. There was also the failure to register the births of some of their children.

Our sixth generation (Samuel born 1855) was christened at Christchurch Alsager.

In 2013 there was a finally a breakthrough with the 1861 census. It's nice to find the family although the results are sad. This is explained in more detail in Chapter 3 – Workhouse Secrets.

Chapter 3

Workhouse Secrets.

It was sad to find that the family of George and Martha Walton fell on hard times. This is certainly true as in 1861 Martha and her sons Samuel and William appear to be in Arclid Workhouse. It has not yet been possible to locate George or to find a record of his death.

The discovery of a reference to Samuel in a book written by Marlene and Graham Langley called At the Crossroads – A History of Arclid Workhouse and Hospital was the key to finding out more about the family. The enumerator who recorded the Arclid census information in 1861 decided that inmates in the workhouse would not have their names recorded – just their initials. The names of the staff of the workhouse we recorded in full. The initials of Martha, Samuel and William Walton are all in the Arclid Workhouse list and therecord of their place of birth matches other birth information.

Above is part of the 1861 census for Arclid workhouse. The enumerator clearly did not think that the inmates were worthy of having there full names recorded. The top entry WW is thought to be William Walton born 1849 the son of George and Martha Walton.

I am sure that Henry Walton, the son of Samuel Walton was not aware of his father having been in the workhouse. He often talked about Smallwood and I questioned him about his own Grandfather and about hisfather. He had no recollection of his paternal Grandfather and did not know what his name was or what his occupation had been. He was clear about his father Samuel being a wheelwright and working in Smallwood but never mentioned the workhouse in connection with his own family.

Ariel photo of Arclid Workhouse – date unknown. It was built in 1844-5 to accommodate 370 inmates. It was extended inlater years before becoming a hospital. It closed in 1993 and all the buildings are now demolished.

Henry was also very protective of two documents - his parents marriage certificate and a memorial card for John Tripp aged 7. He also talked about his maternal Grandfather also called John Tripp as he was listed asa mariner from Liverpool on the marriage certificate of Henry's parents. He was of the opinion that the John Tripp aged 7 was his mother's brother, this information must have been from his mother. However birth records confirm that John was not his mother's brother but his mother's son, his own half brother. This was another secret held by his parents, probably just his mother, which he never found out about. The details of this particular story belong in the Tripp family book to follow this one.

Page 9: The Waltons

A visit to Chester record office confirmed the information regarding Samuel being an inmate there. Although admission and discharge records are no longer available records of the minutes of meetings of the board of Guardians have survived. Below is the record of Samuel being made apprentice to John Dale in 1869. Workhouse children were normally sent into service when they became young teenagers, the record regarding Samuel is unusual as the Guardians would not normally approve a premium payment

There is also a record in the minutes of Samuel being sent to Parkgate with two other inmates. This was in 1868. Parkgate is a village on the Dee estuary of the Wirral Peninsula. It appears to have been run by the Parkgate Sea Bathing Charity. This charity began life in 1790 and was set up to help working class invalids enjoy the benefits of being by the sea and sea bathing.

Chapter 4

Away from the boats – life in Smallwood.

One of the main reasons for becoming interested in Family History research were the stories of my grandfather Henry Walton. I pictured an ideal life in the quiet country side and friendly community of Smallwood. Henry was born and raised at Martins Moss in Smallwood where he attended Smallwood Schooluntil the age of twelve when he had to start work. He also attended St John's Church located next to the school. Either myself or one of my older brothers when we were able to drive took him once a year to Smallwood Church where he tended his parents grave and would walk around the churchyard explaining the families whose ancestors were buried there.

Part of an old drawing located in Chester Record Office which shows a plan of Smallwood School. It's small with separate Boy's and Girl's playgrounds and with the schoolmasters house attached. It still exists in 2014 but much larger with the many extensions sympathetically copying the original architecture.

Samuel Walton born in 1855 married Sarah Tripp, who originated from Liverpool, on 1st July 1884 in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel at Middlewich. Samuel and Sarah had three sons George, William John and Henry. Henry is in our direct line.

Henry (seventh generation) was born in Smallwood on 27th March 1891. After spending his childhood in thevillage of Smallwood he married Ruth Elizabeth Holland on 16th October 1915 at St John's ChurchBuglawton. Henry and Ruth had two children Harold and Nancy. After he had left school aged 12 Henry, orHarry as he was usually called worked on farms for 4 years and then went to work at Birchenwood colliery.

Part of an old ordnance survey map which shows Martins Moss in Smallwood. The road disappearing to the right had side leads to the School and Church. The roads disappearing from the top of the map lead to the same road that goes left to the Legs of Man and right towards Congleton.

This is a “Google Maps” picture of what was part of a row of cottages in Martins Moss Smallwood – the childhood home of Harry (Henry) Walton.

Chapter 5

Congleton.Having arrived at Henry Walton (our eighth generation) I have reached some of my personal memories. AfterHenry married Ruth they had two children - Harold my father, and Nancy. Both were born in Congleton. Henry and Ruth were to stay in Congleton until they died. Harold lived all his life in Congleton, apart from his time in the army. Nancy lived in Sunbury on Thames for many years following her marriage, however she later returned to Congleton so that she could live near to her father.

On the right is a photograph of Harry (Henry) Waltonand his wife Ruth Elizabeth Holland at Blackpool.

When Henry was 21 he went to work for the Co-op asa driver. He married Ruth Elizabeth Holland when hewas 23, first living in Brook Street and then HerbertStreet in Congleton and Queen Street in Buglawtonbefore moving to Kingsley Road, Congleton. In 1960they moved to a retirement bungalow in Buxton OldRoad. Henry lived alone following the death of Ruth inFebruary 1970 until January 1986 when he died aftershort illness in Macclesfield hospital.

Below is a picture taken in Brunswick Coal Wharf inCongleton. Henry Walton is on the left .

On the left is an article copied from the Congleton Chronicle celebrating the 90th birthday of Harry (Henry) Walton in 1982.

Harold (ninth generation) was born 22nd January 1917 in Buglawton Cheshire. Harold married Ada Yates in 1940 at St Stephen's Church Congleton. They had three sons, David, Raymond and Phillip (tenth generation). He also had eight grandchildren.

Two pictures above and below of Harold in his schooldays. Above on the right outside his childhoodhome in Queen Street Buglawton – see picture on the next page of notice to quit when the houses were demolished. Below at Brook Street School, on the front row second from the left. According to WB Stephens in his History of Congleton “the Board of Education were persuaded to make minor alterations to Brook Street and it lingered on alternately condemned and reprieved until 1927”. It must have been then when Harold moved to Buglawton School – see inside back cover.

Copy of the notice to quit served on Henry and Ruth Walton when they lived in Queen Street Buglawton. In March 1938 Harold was 20 and Nancy 16. After leaving Queen Street they moved to Kingsley Road, Congleton before their final move back to Buglawton into a retirement bungalow in Buxton Old Road.

Chapter 6

It's never finished. The research involved in producing this short history has taken many years almost always in short durations. This does lead to problems especially if things aren't always written down in a logical way.

Mistakes have been made especially in between 1970 – 1990 when an incorrect track was taken from Samuel Walton (born 1855) with his father incorrectly identified. There might well be other mistakes and there is certainly more information to find.

In the last few years I have discovered more about my great grandfather Samuel Walton. In particular his time in Arclid Workhouse. It is unfortunate that admission and discharge details for Arclid for this period have been lost.

I do know that Samuel left the workhouse in 1869 to be apprenticed to John Dale. I do not know when his brother William or his mother Martha left the workhouse. I do not know why or when any of them entered the workhouse. Also I do not know what happened to Samuel's father George. Samuel's mother Martha had an illegitimate son who she named John in 1859. Martha registered John's birth at Sandbach and gave her address as Thurlwood Odd Rode. So at the time of John's birth Martha was not in the workhouse. It is easy to speculate that Martha and her sons William, Samuel and John had to enter the workhouse later in 1859 with no father to support them.

John Walton unfortunately died in January 1861 before his second birthday. At this time the family were probably in Arclid Workhouse as the record of John's death states his occupation as son of Martha Walton Charwoman and the cause of death as “Teething”. It was normal practice to separate Children from parents in the workhouse and John's death was recorded by Mary Farr of the Union Workhouse Arclid. I find it uncomfortable to think of Martha's feelings at the time of John's death and what input she had to his care. It was common at that time to list Teething as a cause of death, nowadays teething is thought of as a natural process creating little more that discomfort. Some methods for relieving teething pain have been known to have caused serious harm or even death.

The biggest mystery seems to be – what happened to George Walton between the christening of his son Samuel Walton in 1855 and the birth of Martha Walton's illegitimate son John in 1859? Martha did marry again to a John Foden (note the christian name) in 1870 and in 1871 they were living at Martins Moss Smallwood with Samuel living on Turnpike Road Smallwood still apprentice to John Dale. In 1881 Samuel Walton is living with John and Martha Foden listed as step son.

Postscript

In the final chapter of this book I talk about the mystery of what happened to George Walton (1813). Shortly after completing the book I came across the attached newspaper article on findmypast.I am of the option that this is our George. I find it very sad what happen to George and then to his widow Martha and sons William and Samuel. It does however now make sense. It is also interesting to note that the older sister of William and Samuel did not go back to Cheshire but stayed in Derbyshire and lived with her Aunt - Hannah Pilsbury. Sarah later went to live in Shrewsbury where for many years she was a midwife. It was probably distressing initially for Sarah but in the long term I'm sure she benefitted.
