FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by theOphthalmic Instruments and Appliances Sectional Committee had been approved by the Medical Equipmentand Hospital Planning Division Council,

Giving due care to the quality aspccls of ophthalmic instruments, it was decided to prepare standard for——_

staildcss steel spuds, Waltons sizes 1 and 1,5 mm wide for removal of foreign body from cornea. It is expectedthat the standard will be of help to ophthalmologists, users and manufacturers in maintaining the quality ofthe insmumcnts manufactured in the country.

There is no ISO/IEC standard on the subject. This standard has been prepared based on indigenousmanufacturers data/practices prcvalen[ in the field in India.

For tllc purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final

value, observed or calculated. expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordancewill] 1S 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for roundil)g oIY numerical values (revised)’. The number of significant placesretained ill the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1 SCOPE

1.1 This standard covers the dimensional and otherrequirements for stainless steel spuds, Waltons sizes1 and 1.5 mm wide, used by ophthalmologists forremoval of foreign bodies from cornea.

3 SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS

3.1 Shape and dimensions of spuds. foreign body —Wal[ons sizes 1 and 1.5 mm wide, stainless steel areas shown in Fig. 1.

3.1.1 The tohmanccs on dimensions shall conform toline class of deviation of IS 2102 (Part 1) except thattolerance on length shall be f 2.5 percent.

4 MATERIAL

4.1 Blade

4.1.1 The blade shall be made of stainless steel

conforllling to 2.4 of 1S 3318.

&2 Handle

4.2.1 The handle shall be made of stainless steelconforming to 2.5 of IS 3318.

5 WORKMANSHIP AND FINISH

5.1 The surface shall be smooth and free from alldefects like burrs, pits, cracks, feather nicks, etc.

5.2 The edges shall be even and except around thebevelled tip of the blade shall be rounded off. Theedge around the tip shalI bc semi shmp.

5.3 The handle shall be finished smooth.

6 HEAT TREATMENT

6.1 The blade of the knife shall be uniformly hardenedand tempered to give 700 to 750 HV.

7 TESTS

7.1 Rigidity Test

7.1.1 The handle of the spud shall be gripped in avice so that the junction of the blade with the handleis level with the vice jaws. Follo}ving requirementsshall be complied with:

by ~hc application of a force to the tip, theblade shall be deflected in a directionperpendicular to the plane of the blade by3 mm. On release of the force the blade shallnot have taken on a permanent set.

the handle fixed in the vice in the horizontalplane a load of 1 kg shall bc suspended fromthe blade at a distance of 13 mm from its tip.On completion of the test, the spud shall showno sign of damage.

7.2 Corrosion Resistance Test

7.2.1 The spud shall conform to the requirements ofcorrosion resistance test specified in IS 7531.

8 MARKING

8.1 Each spud shall be legibly and indelibly stampedwith the manufacturer’s name or irade-mark.

8.2 The spud may also be marked with the StandardMark.

8.2.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by

the use of Standard Mark may be granted to manu-facturers or producers, may be obtained from the

9 PRESERVATION AND PACKING

9.1 The blades of the spuds shall be coated with a
