MI SWACO: Bigger and Better

In February Mary O'Brien and Daniel McCormick col-laborated with Richie Blink of Empire Environ mental tocreate a restoration installation at the VPC aimed at pro-tecting newly planted bald cypress seedlings from pre-dation by an invasive aquatic rodent--the Nutria.Protected for the first year, the trees are able to survive.Mature Bald Cypress trees act as storm surge barriers. The protective devices are made from recycled materi-als in a manner to allow them to be transported by boatinto marshlands, and reused on new plantings year afteryear. Three months after the planting the cypress havesprouted leaves and are doing well.

In March VPC hosted 12 Tulane Student volunteeringon their spring break via Tulane's University CommunityAdvance ment Network. The group planted 300 cypressseedlings using the methods developed by EmpireEnviron mental and the visiting sculptors. The group alsoparticipated in a kayak tour through a cypress forestnear Cypress Cove Marina led by Lost LandsEnvironmental tours.
