Copy in by 18th March please. Delivery date is 28th March

It’s a little way in the future but on 14th and 15th April, Nell Steele will be undertaking

a sponsored walk for The Children's Society. Nell is looking for walking companions

and/or sponsors and I’m sure she will be very pleased to hear from you. See Page

35 for more details.

All the news that the Borough Council has sent through will have been and gone by

the time you read this so there is nothing to pass on to you this time. The Police

have a whole page this month. Although it is not “up-to-the-minute” stuff it does

contain some useful advice to think about.

Details of the Lent Study Course can be found on Page 43. Don't miss it!

Best wishes

Journeying toward Easter

Dear Friends

The next big celebration in our churches will of course be Easter. However we have to

travel through Lent first! Lent begins withAsh Wednesday on 5 March and we will have

a quiet service on that evening in St Botolph's Church, Grimston, to mark that event (see

centre pages for our list of services). Lent is the six week period running up to Easter

when we look towards the cross and resurrection of Jesus. It is a journey that should

lead us closer to God.

Many people follow the tradition of 'giving up' something for Lent (the most popular being

chocolate which is why, no doubt, we gorge ourselves on chocolate eggs afterwards!)

The act of 'self-denial' (i.e. no chocolate) is supposed to help us focus our attention on

the God who gave up all for our sakes – even to death on the cross. Giving up chocolate

(or something else) may do that for you but there is another way of looking at 'self-denial'.

May I suggest rather than 'giving up' something, focus instead simply on 'giving'.

True giving is in fact quite rare! Usually we give with invisible strings attached

(consciously or sub-consciously). We may expect something in return – another gift,

recognition, reward, gratitude – or just the enjoyment of feeling that we are generous and

nice people!

Jesus says that when we give we should not let our right hand know what our left hand is

doing! In other words we are to be self-conscious about it. Essentially that means

letting go of our own demands and/or expectations.

Every true act of giving is a gift of 'self'. When we have felt this kind of gift it awakens our

own capacity in turn to give of ourselves to others. It's that kind of giving that is at the

heart of the Easter mystery we are preparing to enter more deeply through Lent.

Giving to others and not expecting anything in return doesn't necessarily mean presents

or money or things – but our time, our kindness, our love, a smile, a thank you – given

from the heart. It's the kind of giving that brings light into an otherwise drab and

depressed world.

May Christ, who gave us his whole self, be a lantern to our feet and a light to our path as

we journey together through the weeks of Lent toward Easter.

Much love

Storytelling and Poetry Week

at

Ashwicken CE Primary School

Here at Ashwicken on 3rd to 7th

February the children had a fun week

reading stories and poems. On one day

they dressed up as their favourite Roald

Dahl character and ate a lunch of worms

(spaghetti) and meatballs. On the Roald

Dahl theme they read favourite books,

listened to stories and watched films.

We also had a 'Poetry Reading

Competition' and the standard of entries

was very high. Some children read out

well known poems, others recited their

poems by heart and others made up

their own poems.

Leziate WI January meeting

The meeting opened with the singing of

'Jerusalem' by the 16 members and 4

visitors at the 69th January birthday party

since Leziate WI was formed. We all

brought food and helped with table

arrangements. Everyone brought a

wrapped present for the competition of 'a

decorated present', which was won by

Ann Rainbird (one of our visitors), 2nd

was Wendy Twite and joint 3rd were

Myrtle Roberts and Elsie Bush. Birthday

ladies were Janet Eason, Wendy Twite

and Myrtle Roberts and they each

received a floral mug. Our 4 visitors (Iris,

Ann, Margaret and Heather) were very

helpful at our party and we felt that they

enjoyed meeting us all, so perhaps we

will have 4 more members in the future,

which will be good for Leziate WI.

The WI will be preparing and serving

refreshments at the newly refurbished

Leziate Village Hall on Saturday 5 April

at 2pm, when it will be officially opened

by King's Lynn Mayor, Cllr Elizabeth

Watson. We do enjoy helping at village

hall events.

Leziate Parish Council Report

The Parish Council met on Wednesday

12th February 2014.

There still appears to be a problem with

dog fouling in certain areas of the parish.

We would remind all dog walkers that it

is anti-social and illegal to allow your

dogs to foul footpaths. The Parish

Council has provided several dog bins in

the parish and we would be appreciative

if these were used extensively. The

Parish Council discussed the option of

providing waste bag dispensers by the

bins. It was thought that the investment

would be unwise until we could prove

that it would ease the problem. However

we will ask SNAP if they could look to

help finance one to gauge the use.

Our PCSO, due to shift patterns, was

unable to attend the Parish Council

meeting but had sent a report which

recorded no incidents. While this is

good news we must not get complacent

and must be aware of any unusual

activity in the parish. Neighbouring

districts are having real problems with

heating oil being stolen so we must

remain vigilant.

Much discussion was had regarding the

planning application at the sailing club to

remove condition 5 which prohibits the

use of motorised craft on the lake. The

Parish Council was concerned that the

acoustic report was flawed and

inconsistent. They felt if electrically

operated boats and winches were used

then they would be able to look at this

application more favourably. In

conclusion the Parish Council objected

to this application making reference to

electrically operated boats etc.

The flashing signs appear to be having

an effect on speeding, however it was

concerning to note that a vehicle had

been logged doing 78mph in Leziate.

The information will be analysed further

enabling the police to specifically target

times when these excessive speeds

occur.

It was agreed that the Parish Council will

inform Sibelco and Norfolk County

Council that there are several trees that

need attention due to the recent bad

weather.

Next meeting of the Parish Council is on

. This meeting will start at the

earlier time of 7.00pm and Sibelco will be

present to give a presentation on the

Bawsey Lakes. All are welcome.

Hall Management Committee is pleased

to announce that the refurbishment

works to the hall commenced on 20th

January. During the past 6 weeks the

toilet refurbishment has been completed

and the installation of the new kitchen is

well underway. The hall will be closed

between 10th - 16th March to allow the

floor and ceiling of the main hall to be

replaced. The project is currently on

track to complete by the end of March,

and the Committee is planning a

Community Tea Party and ribbon cutting

ceremony to be carried out by the Mayor

on Saturday, 5th April at 2.00pm.

Everybody is welcome to come along

At Norfolk County Council we may see

another vote in April whether to

The price range of alternatives is known

to be between £55-£85 per tonne, they

are so much cheaper than the 'Willows'

EAST WINCH NEWS

EAST WINCH NEWS

Commemorating

World War I!

East Winch PCC and the East Winch

and West Bilney Community Project are

hoping to commemorate the beginning

of World War I with an exhibition in the

Village Hall. Many of you will have

mementos or photographs from the war -

my umbrella stand is part of a brass

shell case. We would very much like to

collect these things together and show

them over a weekend.

We also hope to research the names on

the war memorial, and find out about the

life of General Allenby, who used to

spend part of the year at West Bilney

Hall when he was a boy.

Please contact Nell Steele (01553

840814) or Charlotte Paton (01553

East Winch Village Hall

February marks the first anniversary of

our new kitchen installation in the village

hall at Station Road, East Winch. The

trustees are proud that they can now

offer good catering facilities, not just for

parties and special occasions, but also to

the regular children's groups and other

club users.

Have you ever considered starting a

hobby or interest for a group of people

and are looking for a venue to hold your

meeting? Currently the hall is used as

the venue for ladies' keep fit (Monday

afternoons), Short Mat Bowls Club

(meets Wednesday afternoons (winter),

Wednesday evenings (summer), and two

mothers and toddlers groups (Tuesday

and Friday mornings).

All of the said clubs would welcome new

members joining. As a member of the

bowls club, they would not let me join the

ladies' keep fit???? I can recommend

enjoyable and lively games to be had by

all at our weekly get togethers.

There are currently booking slots

available throughout the week for anyone

wishing to hire the hall at reasonable

rates and special rates for long term

users.

a very informative talk on the work of the

The helicopters can reach patients

It was unanimously agreed not to enter

Gayton Parish Council News

Meeting held 10th February 2014

The Council was extremely pleased to

note that over 100 votes had been

collected for the preferred skatepark

design. It was agreed to collate all of the

responses to confirm which design

received the most votes. The Council

will then begin compiling application

forms to WREN and Norfolk Community

Foundation for grants towards the costs

of the preferred skatepark.

The Council considered a presentation

from David Marsham regarding the piece

of land which was put into the Local

Development Framework at the end of

the period for submissions and the

details of which were not included in the

consultation documents received by the

Council. The Council noted that the

proposal included a completely new

school site which would be

approximately three times larger than

the existing site. Access to the school

and the additional housing would be

from Back Street. The Council thanked

Mr Marsham for the information and

noted that the new site would be

included in the next round of

consultations, along with the existing

proposed site, GAY1.

The Council was extremely pleased that

four candidates attended the meeting

wishing to join the Council. After

following its co-option procedure, the

Council welcomed Lewis Petch and

Andy Dewing, who will officially join the

Council at the March meeting providing

that no election is called by 11th Feb.

Litter Pick

After it made its decision to begin holding

its monthly meetings at the school,

following advice from the trustees of the

hall that it would have to change its

meeting time to 8.00pm, the Council has

since been advised by the trustees that,

due to changes in the Guides and

Brownies meeting times and venues, it

can resume its normal meeting time of

7.30pm at the Jubilee Hall. After some

debate and acknowledgement that the

acoustics in the school were very good, it

was agreed by way of vote, to resume

monthly meetings at the Jubilee Hall

from March.

The Council has arranged to hold its

annual litter pick on Sunday 18th March

meeting at 10.30am in The Crown car

park. All volunteers will be gladly

welcomed!

For the full minutes of the meeting, visit

. The next

meeting is planned to be on 10th March

at 7.30pm at Jubilee Hall.

Orchestra for the Age of

Enlightenment

Our younger classes had a

wonderful morning at Docking

Primary School with the OAE from

London. Our children thoroughly

enjoyed participating in a number of

different musical activities and

listening to the orchestra play. The

children did everything from singing,

conducting and even had the

chance to help compose an entirely

new piece.

We are now looking forward to the

Orchestra working once again with

our older classes in readiness for a

performance at the Corn Exchange

during the summer term.

This term, in spite of the dreadful

weather, we have also enjoyed a

range of sporting activities. St.

Martha’s Primary School came for a

morning of hockey coaching and

matches. The children are now

looking forward to the Cluster Rugby

Competition after half term. Our

thanks to Mr Lloyd and Mr Littler for

providing the children with some

excellent coaching sessions! 3 of

our pupils made it through to the

Cluster Swimming Final. Katelin

Taylor won her event, Gabby

Eggleton came third and Edward

Mellor managed a very good second

place. All competed well and did

magnificently to get through to this

final event against some very tough

competition! Well done to all!

Outside school Harry Russell

continues to perform exceptionally

well in Taekwondo. He very proudly

showed us his gold and silver

medals from a recent national

competition.

St Nicholas Church was not

Immune

Since Christmas a large number of

burglaries and thefts have taken place in

Gayton and our church was not immune.

Last month we told you the box which

contained the hymn numbers had been

stolen. Almost certainly at the same

time, but discovered a few days later, the

pressed brass offertory plate and its little

wooden stand was discovered stolen.

This type of crime caused distress to

parishioners as these items were

probably given to the church in memory

of a loved one many years ago. The

theft would have occurred in daylight.

GAYTON THORPE NEWS

There's a lot going on in

Gayton Thorpe this year!

New Services for 2014

Annual Church Meeting

Our new style services will be held on aThursday or Friday evening at 7pm.Please check the service times in themagazine.

The aim of these services is to providean opportunity for a good sing songduring a short service followed by a gettogether with a chat over drinks andnibbles.

Do come and join us! There's always awarm welcome!

Our annual church meeting will be held

in Gayton Thorpe Church on

Wednesday 19th March at 7pm.

The annual church meeting is when we

give a round up of the previous year

(including events, fundraising, the

church building and the accounts) and a

run down of the plans for the coming

year and beyond.

There are effectively three meetings.

Anyone who wishes to can attend the

first meeting, which is when the

churchwarden is elected. The meetings

which follow immediately after this may

be attended by anyone who is on the

church electoral roll.

The church electoral roll is not the same

as the voting electoral roll.

If you would like to know a bit more

about what goes on at the church and

the plans for the future, then please do

consider joining the church electoral roll.

There is a simple form to fill in and it

doesn't mean you'll be landed with a job.

(unless you want to be!)

Please contact me if you would like an

electoral roll form, or for more

information.

We shall be holding our annual Easter

service followed by Easter egg hunt on

Saturday 19th April at 2.30pm

As always there will be a short service

followed by an Easter egg hunt for the

children and refreshments for anyone

waiting!

Following on from our tower tour day last

year, we will be hosting a small number

of special tower tours this year.

The first tour will be a sunrise tour to be

held on the 5th April, weather permitting.

The tour will involve meeting at the

church at a scary time in the morning,

before sunrise. A tower climb to the top

so that you can watch the sunrise over

our beautiful part of Norfolk. You will

then come back down the tower for a

bacon buttie and a nice warming cup of

tea or coffee.

This tour will be open to a maximum of 4

people, due to the space restrictions on

top of the tower. Participants must be

reasonably fit and reasonably confident

with heights. There is a suggested

donation for the tour of £20 per person.

The Church as a Family

Our session this month will be held

in the Jubilee Hall at Gayton on

Thursday 27th

March – arrival from

3.30pm.

In February we talked about what a

wonderful world we live in. When we

looked about us there were signs of

Spring everywhere – signs of hope

and beauty – that cheered us up

after all the stormy rain and wind the

country has suffered!! We talked

about how people harm the earth

and what little things we can do to

help look after it.

We made some simple bird feeders

I start this report with some exciting

news. Our Branch is now affiliated with

the King Edward 7th Sixth Form Interact

Club. Our affiliation will benefit both the

Interact Club and our Branch . Affiliation

helps towards any Duke of Edinburgh

award schemes that groups may be

working towards. It also gives the

affiliated groups knowledge on how

charities such as ours operate, giving

them learning experiences that they may

not yet have had. We will also aim to

hold joint social events. The Royal

British Legion issues certificates to

affiliated groups.

PCSOs

Police Community Support Officers

(PCSOs) across West Norfolk will be

teaming up with the Borough Council of

King's Lynn & West Norfolk in a bid to

crack down on persistent dog fouling.

PCSOs across the district now have

additional powers which enable them to

issue fixed penalty notices on behalf of

the Borough Council, the aim being to

tackle the specific problem of

irresponsible dog owners who do not

pick up after their dog. The fixed penalty

notice carries a fine of £75 and can also

be used for those picking up and then

throwing the bag of dog faeces in the

vicinity as a littering offence.

The new powers came into force as a

result of feedback from the Safer

Neighbourhood Action Panels (SNAPs)

which are held across the district. Dog

fouling was an issue that was raised by

residents in many areas as a key issue

where they live.

“These new enforcement rules will also

allow us to target hotspot areas for dog

fouling, ensuring that these areas are

regularly patrolled to target persistent

offenders.”

Safer Neighbourhood Action Panels

(SNAPs) are public meetings where local

people can raise any concerns about

their community. Any member of the

public living or working in the

neighbourhood is welcome to attend and

we also encourage organised community

groups and Parish Councils to attend.

The meetings are held every two

months, at a community venue within the

neighbourhood.

To find out more information about the

SNAP meeting in your local area visit

www.norfolk.police.uk.

Sponsored Walk for the

Children's Society

The Children's Society offers

unconditional support to children in

trouble in the UK.

Recently, they have successfully

campaigned to increase the scope of

children eligible for free school meals.

They do a lot of work with runaway

children, mostly teenagers, though

some may be as young as 8,

respecting children's views on their

futures, and facilitating but not forcing

children to return home if it seems

right.

I am going to do a sponsored walk

along the Nar Valley Way on 14th and

15th April, starting at Marriott's

Warehouse in Lynn at 10am on the

first day and at 10am at Churchgate

Tea Room in Castle Acre the following

day. The distance is about 34 miles.

West Norfolk residents are reminded not

to release any security information about

their homes following reports of bogus

telephone calls in the area. Two

residents received calls recently from

someone claiming to be from an alarm

company working for the police. The

caller asked about security measures at

the home and offered to visit the

property to discuss crime prevention

methods. All the calls came from a

withheld number.

Officers would advise residents to not

give out any details about their home

security, either via the phone or in

person, to unexpected callers. If

someone visits your home always ask to

see identification.

Residents are urged to report anything

suspicious to police using the non-

emergency number 101 – if a crime is in

progress always dial 999.

Further crime prevention advice is

available at www.norfolk.police.uk.

An elderly lady had her bank card stolen

from her handbag in the car park of

Tesco's on London Road in Downham

Market. Two persons approached her

initially inside the store then distracted

her by asking for directions outside.

After finding her bank card missing; she

then discovered £300 had been

withdrawn from her account.

Shoppers are advised to be vigilant

whilst shopping and loading their

vehicles and to ensure that their bags

are secure at all times. If someone asks

you for help and you are uncomfortable,

politely decline and walk away.

Furthermore, never keep PIN numbers

with your bank cards. Any suspicious

activity should be reported to police on

101 or call 999 if a crime is in progress.

A lady in West Norfolk had a close shave

when she was telephoned by fraudsters

who claimed to be from her credit card

company. She was tricked into thinking

she had then phoned the credit company

back and disclosed her PIN number. A

short time later two men arrived at her

address to collect the card. Her husband

smelt a rat, chased the men off and

police were called. This is quite a

sophisticated fraud where the thieves

keep the phone line open, so despite the

person thinking they are phoning the

bona fide telephone number of the credit

card company they are still talking to the

would be thieves. Banks and credit card

companies never call to ask for account

details or PIN numbers over the phone

and they never send people to collect a

card, so please be warned.

Come along to the next Safer

Neighbourhood Action Panel meeting for

the Dersingham and Gayton

Neighbourhood on Thursday 13 March at

7pm at Dersingham Infant and Nursery

School, Saxon Way, Dersingham, for

Nelson’s Journey Presentation

Keeping Abreast Presentation

On Sunday 24th November 2013

Stephen, Brad, Emi (team photographer)

and I visited Hilltops Outdoor Centre,

Sheringham to present Nelson's

Journey, our chosen charity, with a

cheque for £3,252.50, the amount was

raised from

which was completed over three days –

Friday 24th, Saturday 25th and Sunday

26th May 2013 and the route covered a

distance of approx. 93 miles. Also,

monies raised from

(covered 6 miles)

and

(covered 2.62 miles).

Nelson's Journey use this outward

bound centre for their therapeutic

camps, and is a brilliant setting, we were

able to take the opportunity to see the

team in action with a group of children

who were having an activity weekend.

We met with Carol Bundock, who is a

patron and also a friend, who had met

Megan through Rainbows as she is also

president of Girlguiding Norfolk. Carol

introduced us to a few of the Nelson's

Journey team and gave us a tour of

Hilltops.

On Wednesday 5th February 2014 a

group of us went to Queen Elizabeth

Hospital to present Keeping Abreast

Support Group, our chosen charity, with

a cheque for £3,225.00, the amount

raised from our on

members of the team.

This year's challenge is to walk up 24

peaks, each over 2,400 feet, in 24 hours

total walking time, covering approx. a

total of 32 miles.

Some of the route follows well-defined

ridges, but the height climbed and

descended throughout the challenge is

significant. The route includes many of

the more famous peaks such as Red

Pike, Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Great

Gable. The challenge will be undertaken

over the weekend of Saturday 17th and

Sunday 18th May 2014.

- Negotiating 10 of the peaks,

covering approx 18 miles.

- Another long day of

negotiating the remaining 14 peaks,

covering approx 14 miles.

The total height climbed is over 13,000

feet.

Our charity we have chosen for this

challenge is East Anglian Air Ambulance,

providing Helicopter Emergency Medical

Services (HEMS) across the counties of

Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and
