A Message from Our CEO
Restoring trust in family and one another
We learn at a very young age about sharing and the joy it brings.
Being able to give is an integral part of our relationships with one another.
For families, giving is a result of love and trust. And it’s about sharing experi-
ences and emotions and frustrations with those who have close ties and strong
bonds. In many ways, that is what Youth Villages strives to do with children and
families – restore that trust and ability to share.
That’s why our work is challenging and rewarding. Our staff is committed to
helping every child succeed, to learn how to trust others again. Your support
of our programs helps ensure we’re not only able to continue that important
work, but expand it to help more children and families.
Our footprints of success are left in all the communities we serve, and our
efforts are being recognized. A new book by Thomas Tierney and Joel Fleish-
man, titled “Give Smart: Philanthropy That Gets Results,” provides practical
guidance for donors who want to get the most impact from their giving. It’s a
great honor for Youth Villages to be included as an example of an organization
that delivers real results for the investment donors make in us. Journalist and
author David Bornstein recently wrote about Youth Villages in the New York
Times’ “Opinionator” blog, highlighting why Youth Villages focuses on help-
ing troubled children in their homes in partnership with the child’s family and
extended support systems.
Recognition like this is wonderful – especially for our frontline staff who
works so hard for children and families.
But for me, the real joy comes from meeting with children and families
who have completed our programs. You can see and feel their energy as they
discuss their experiences and their emotions. They speak of their past simply
as it was and discuss a future of promise and success. They finish each other’s
sentences. Most importantly, they laugh.
They interact.
They share.

MID-SOUTHPROGRAM SUCCESS
CHRISTIECARE, YOUTH VILLAGES ANNOUNCE MERGER
outcomes of children and families participating in its programs since 1994.
The above graph reflects the status at one year post-discharge of children who received Youth Villages’ services. This includes youth served in the Intercept in-home services program, transitional living program, foster care, community-based groups homes and residential centers in Mem-phis.
To better meet the needs of children and families
in Oregon, the boards of directors of Oregon-based
ChristieCare and Tennessee-based Youth Villages have
agreed to a merger.
ChristieCare, founded in 1859, serves children state-
wide in Oregon through residential and educational
services based in Clackamas County.
The merger will allow for expansion of those residential
programs and for the introduction of intensive in-home
services to help children and families throughout the state.
Lynne Saxton, who has served as chief executive of-
ficer of ChristieCare, will be executive director of Youth
Villages-ChristieCare of Oregon.
“We’ve been familiar with ChristieCare’s great work for
many years,” Lawler said, “and feel honored to have this op-
portunity to bring two highly effective organizations together
to strengthen help for children and families in Oregon.”
PROGRAM FOR TEENS PART OF NATIONAL TRIAL
Youth Villages’ transitional living
program is part of a national clinical
trial to measure its effectiveness.
Conducted by MDRC through
grants from the Edna McConnell
Clark Foundation and the Bill & Me-
linda Gates Foundation, the study will
evaluate the difference between the
TL program and usual services avail-
able in the community. Participants
will be interviewed periodically to
track their progress.
The study will involve about 1,600
young people who will be randomly
assigned to TL or other community
resources during the next two years.
TL services are available for young
people 17-22 who are aging out of state
custody and have little or no sup-
port. TL specialists help young people
secure housing; pursue educational
and employment goals; access health
and mental health services; learn such
independent living skills as budgeting,
cooking, cleaning and shopping; and
create and maintain healthy relation-
ships with family and others.
“To my knowledge, there are very
few evidence-based programs for this
population,” said Sarah Hurley, direc-
tor of research at Youth Villages. “We
hope the evidence produced by this
study will help us convince states and
others to increase resources to meet
the needs of young people entering
this critical transition phase.”
HELPING AT-RISK YOUTHYouth Villages is partnering with
Memphis City Schools and other
government and community organi-
zations to intervene and reach gang-
involved youth.
The partnership, named Gang Re-
duction Assistance for Saving Society’s
Youth, expands the scope of Youth
Villages’ ability to reach at-risk youth
who need the most help. Intervention
teams comprise representatives from
the Memphis City Schools, Memphis
Police Department, the district attor-
ney’s office, juvenile courts, outreach
groups and Youth Villages counselors
who meet once a week to track the
progress of youth and create support
structures to help them avoid the
influence of gangs.
AROUND YOUTH VILLAGES
4
DERICKUS MAKES A CHANGE FOR THE BETTERDerickus was one of four
Memphis-area high school
students who recently were
invited to Washington, D.C.,
for a national youth summit
on education.
Soon to be a high-school
graduate, Derickus filmed
and reported on the event.
He’d like to do something
similar as a career, maybe
be a TV cameraman. But
he needed help to get on
track. He needed support
to avoid negative influences
and peers. He needed to
improve at school, find a
job and prepare for his own
place. Most importantly, he
needed support to further
his education.
“I’d like to operate a
camera for television news,”
he said. “I know interacting
with negative things won’t
get me too far, and I want to
go to college.”
For Derickus, the Wash-
ington, D.C., visit was a
small, yet significant step
toward success. He’s been in
Youth Villages’ transitional
living program for almost
a year, and his journey to
adulthood has a bright
future – he plans to attend
Tennessee Technical Center
before going on to college.
He dreams of being the
first in his family to do so.
Whitney Robertson is his TL
specialist.
“Derickus had a lot of
goals, but he didn’t know
how to get there,” she said.
“He’s very motivated to
succeed, but he lacked the
supports many young adults
his age have.”
About a year ago, Der-
ickus got into an argument
with a friend and decided to
put his life on a more posi-
tive path. The friend told
him about Youth Villages’
TL program, and he made
a phone call to check into it
himself. It was exactly what
he needed.
Once he was
in the program,
he began to im-
prove at school
and even took on
more of a leader-
ship role among
his peers. He’s
helping others in
the TL program
with their school-
work now.
Through a grant from
The Day Foundation, Youth
Villages’ transitional living
program began in 1999 to
help youth get a strong start
on adulthood in the crucial
years between ages 17 and
22. Transitional living spe-
cialists help young people
learn to deal with the minor
and major problems that
come with adulthood. They
help participants find hous-
ing and health services and
learn how to access trans-
portation and meet their
basic needs. In addition,
they learn the skills needed
to find and keep jobs and
continue their education.
Whitney and Derickus
continue to work on study
habits to prepare him for
education after high school.
They’re also preparing for
job interviews through role-
playing. He’s established his
own bank account and man-
ages his money. They’re also
going through what will be
needed to enroll at TTC. Der-
ickus worked on eliminating
negative peer groups and
environments — a difficult
task because of his location.
But Whitney said Derickus is
overcoming an environment
that devalues success.
“He’s aware of it,” Whit-
ney said. “And he’s well on
his way to improving those
areas of his life to be able to
be successful.”
In addition to finding em-
ployment, Derickus plans
to share a place of his own
with a relative.
“After I graduate high
school, I’d like to get a sum-
mer job, move into an apart-
ment and go to TTC here for
graphic design,” Derickus
said. “After that, I can go to
college and work.”
The decision to go to
trade school instead of a
four-year college took seri-
ous consideration. He’s mo-
tivated to be the first in his
family to go to college, but
wanted to have a market-
able skill for employment
first. In Derickus’ case, the
TL program has been a
support for him to achieve
footholds in everyday adult
life. He has a plan.
“I’ve been more of a
guide to him,” Whitney
said. “He’s very motivated
and takes everything we’ve
worked on to another level.
He’s very impressive.”

Tiffany enjoys spending time with
her family.
They maintain a few souped-up cars
to race, getting together in their spare
time to work on the cars and get them
ready. On weekends, the work gets
put to the test on the drag strip. Tiffany
gets a turn behind the wheel. She gets
a thrill out of those moments when all
the preparation culminates into a fast
run.
“I guess I’m an adrenaline junkie,”
Tiffany said. “I like going fast. We have
fun being together at the track.”
But home was different. Tiffany, 18,
and her mother, Florence, agreed on
one thing — there was a lot of arguing
and fighting.
“Every day was like a wrestling
match,” Florence said. “We were fight-
ing, yelling. It wasn’t good.”
“We didn’t get along with each other
at all,” Tiffany said.
With Tiffany, the stress of being at
home began to take its toll. There
was a history of abuse at a very young
age. As a result of that and the recent
home environment, Tiffany became
physically and verbally aggressive
with her siblings and mother. She also
exhibited self-harming behaviors and
suffered anxiety attacks. Tiffany was
assigned to Youth Villages Family In-
tervention Specialist Casey Wood late
last year for help.
Right off, Casey saw something dif-
ferent with Tiffany.
“We started off with a really good
girl,” Casey said. “But she needed
more support – she has goals and
is very determined to see them
through.”
Casey worked with the family on be-
ing supportive of one another’s efforts.
She helped them set behavior plans,
plan family chores and worked with
the family on communication skills.
With Casey’s help, Tiffany worked on
coping better with anger and frustra-
tion.
“I wasn’t for it at first,” Tiffany said.
“I didn’t want someone in my business.
But after a while, I recognized what
she was telling me to do was working.”
Youth Villages’ Intercept intensive
in-home services program provides
treatment to troubled children and
families in their own homes at times
convenient for the families. Intercept
family intervention specialists provide
services to the family, rather than just
to the youth, meeting with families at
least three times weekly and remain-
ing on-call around the clock.
Although the process was slow, Tiffa-
ny said, she pointed to one incident a
few weeks into her therapy when her
brother began antagonizing her, and
she was able to remove herself from
the situation before acting out.
“I realized the actions weren’t worth
the consequences,” Tiffany said.
Casey said Tiffany was one of her
most interesting young people.
“With Tiffany, home was the place
that was the most stressful,” she said.
“The family got along and did so much
together, but the fun times didn’t
continue at home. I think the family
had to work through some past issues
and learn to support Tiffany’s goals.
And Tiffany had to learn how to better
communicate and cope with anger
and frustration.”
Now, the whole family’s
on board, Casey said.
Tiffany completed her
Youth Villages program
in April. The family does
quite a bit together, in-
cluding eating meals,
completing household
chores and watching
movies. The family’s
supporting Tiffany’s
educational and career
goals. In fact, Tiffany
will enter Youth Vil-
lages’ transitional living
program to support her
goals as well.
“I think we’re going to be OK,” Flor-
ence said. “We all have space in the
home to go to. Casey has sure been a
positive influence on my family and
myself.”

EURO FEST A SUCCESSThe Memphis Euro Auto Fest last
fall was again a spectacular show with
a collection of British, German, Italian
and other European cars. It is hard
to miss when the show is the center-
piece on the lush grounds of the Youth
Villages Bartlett Campus. The event
raised $5,000 to benefit Youth Villages’
programs.
HAUNTED WEB THRILLS, CHILLS AGAIN
KIDS HAVE A FIELD DAYEach year, staff and youth at Youth
Villages’ Dogwood Campus hold a
field day. Youth participated in danc-
ing, various races and face-painting
and were able to test their skills on a
huge climbing wall.
HOLIDAY HEROES HELPS 650 YOUTHNearly $50,000 was raised
during Youth Villages’
Holiday Heroes campaign
to purchase Christmas
presents for 650 youth in
Youth Villages’ programs.
More than 25 organizations
and 139 individuals donated
time and money to help en-
sure children had presents
to open for Christmas.
Last fall, the HauntedWeb of Horrors raised nearly $80,000 to benefit Youth Vil-
lages’ programs. It is one of many events throughout the year that raise money
for such Youth Villages programs as transitional living and mentoring.

ANGELA GETS A RIDEAngela, a participant in Youth Vil-
lages’ transitional living program, re-
cently received a car that was donated
to Youth Villages. Angela was shocked
to tears of joy about the car. She at-
tends Southwest Community College
and has a 2-year-old daughter. She
was discharged from the TL program
late last year.

Looking for information
about a planned gift?
To all those who have sup-
ported our work by making
a gift, thank you. Your con-
tinued support and gener-
osity allow us to provide the
most effective services to
children and families across
the Mid-South.
Whether you’re planning a gift
through your will or by setting
up a trust for Youth Villages or
another nonprofit, Youth Vil-
lages can help.
The Youth Villages website
has information on donations
and planned giving that may be
valuable to you.
Simply visit youthvillages.org
and click Donate, and you’ll find
an introduction to planned giving. A category titled
“How Can I…,” lists all the vehicles included in a
plan, including wills and bequests, gifts of appreci-
ated stock and gifts of real estate, with examples.
In addition, there is a section on “why everyone
needs a will,” a glossary of terms, an estate inten-
tion form and even a planned giving calculator to
see what a planned gift would mean in your unique
circumstances.
